WWBTD?

I'm doing Diamondman HIM next Sunday, September 13.

I'm also training for IMCOZ (which is Nov 29).

I don't want to do a big taper but I don't want to go into the HIM totally exhuasted, either.  Should I cut out 6 hrs of my scheduled workouts since I'll be doing about that much on Sunday ?  Should I take off the day before?  Two days before? Go heavy the beginning of the week then rest a bit .... ?

Taper.  Race hard. Recover for a week.  Begin IM build.

You have over 2 months (10 weeks after the recovery if I counted right).  Plenty of time.

I'd just take a few days off before the race and then return to full IM mode when you feel recovered.  Worked for me anyway.  I definitely wouldn't worry about conserving total hours.
