Subject: Season #1 has come to an End..Need Resource
Greetings.  Had an exciting year with 2 Tri-It Sprints and 1 full sprint ending in a second place finish in Clydesdale Division for 40 and overs.  Increased my 5K by a full minute and completed my first .5 mile swim and did as I expected; Ifelt so good coming out of the water.

I have some work to do on my bike and would like to get faster and stronger in my run to be competitive in my age group outside of Clydesdale.  I am rightl on the line to be in this grouping and suspect I'll be down to the 190's or high 180's.  I am looking for resources for the off season to better myself in biking and running. I belong to a Fitness Club so I have the weights, classes, pool etc. to keep things going.  Any guidance will help.

Congrats on all the success this year, sounds like a fantastic first year!

Regarding your question, check out The Triathlete's Training Bible, by Joe Friel.  I got it a few months before my first tri and I found it to be a great resource, but I think it's a much better read at the point that you're at right now: you have a year under your belt, so you have an idea of what worked and what didn't.  You're also at season's end, with most likely a full 6 months or more before your next race.  The book lays out a full season's training plan, from the base period to a proper taper before your 'A' races.  Now that you have a year of racing and are looking toward particular races for next year you can lay out a complete year of training (that, for all intents and purposes, can start right now).  It really builds your training plan from the ground up: what do you need to work on? How do you work your weaknesses into a plan, both weekly and season-long?  How long does each period last (your base, build, and taper), and what are the specific workouts you should be focusing on in each period?  It also discusses proper mechanics, strength training specific to triathlete's, nutrition...really, everything.

Anyway, give it a look, I think it'd go a long way to shaping your offseason training plan and getting the most out of what, for you, is a focus on improved run and bike splits.

Good luck, hope you enjoy it if you get it.

If you don't already have a bike trainer, using that consistently will make you a much stronger rider next spring.

Fall is great for training... particualrly running.  Focus on shorter races to increase speed.  Winter = swimming, work on form.  Hit the bike trainer for shorter high intensity workouts.  Congrats on a good first season.

X2 on this.  Take some time off for a bit and work this winter to come back stronger.  Congrats on the races.
