Extreme Veteran 508![]() Fleming Island, FL | Subject: Not another tattoo thread!Ok, I've done my 1st IM and have no desire to get an MDot tattoo even though my wife and kids think I should. I have never wanted one and don't plan on ever getting one. I have no problem with others that get the tatoos. My question is, why do I get the sense on this forum and others that wearing your race T-shirt or finisher hat is taboo or something? Most anytime I wear a T-shirt or hat, it is from one of my previous races. I hope my senses are wrong or maybe I'm just a dork. |

Master 1609![]() ![]() ![]() Gold Coast Australia. | Subject: RE: Not another tattoo thread!Your senses are not wrong. Here are the rules: T-Shirt Etiquette Guidelines: 1. A shirt cannot be worn unless the wearer has participated in the event. There is an exception, though: "significant others" and volunteers are exempt. 2. Any race tee, less than a marathon distance, shouldn’t be worn to an ultramarathon event. This goes double for the wearing of sprint-tri shirts to Ironman and Half-Ironman events. It simply doesn’t represent a high enough "cool factor " and sends a red flag regarding your rookiness. It's like taking a knife to a gunfight. It's probably best just to wear a generic name-brand athletic shirt, and go hide in a corner until race time.
15. Never, ever, borrow a race finisher's shirt from another runner to wear to an event that you didn't run. If you do, remember that in Dante's Inferno, he wrote about a special Hell for characters such as you; right between Tax Collectors and Lawyers. 16. All children or grandchildren of ours can wear hand-me-down race finisher's shirts for races that I've run in. When they are asked, "did you run in that 100-mile trail race?" They can proudly respond, "no, but my daddy (or grandad) did." If your progeny has put-up with you being an ultrarunner, they have said rights too. If you have completed an Ironman, your kids also have the same rights. They've put up with a lot of crap (or outright neglect) over the years, and deserve to wear them.

That's awesome. |

Master 2407![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bellevue, WA | Subject: RE: Not another tattoo thread! There is a time and place for finisher shirts and hats, just like any other clothing. I haven't noticed any taboo about wearing them. I wear my finisher shirts wherever I'd wear any logo T shirt. I hardly ever wear hats except when running, and then anything in my collection is fair game. As for the "rules", I've been amused at various events by the social ettiquette of the finisher T and hat. There's certainly some street cred associated with finisher shirts, like the one from last year for the current event, or wearing an Ironman shirt to a marathon or vice-versa. But you can fall off the edge into dorkyness by outclassing the current event (Ironman shirt to a community 5K fun run). If you wear a shirt to a particular event, then you may get questions, comments or stories about it ("Hey I see you finished Ironman Arizona, I'm doing that in November, ...."). So you'll just end up looking a like a poser if you didn't actually do the event. Completing doesn't matter - sometimes a DNF story is more entertaining than a finisher story. One of the things I really enjoy about triathlons is that it's an individual sport done as a group. There is no such thing as dominating the race unless you're trying to win it, which very very few of us are trying to do. Certainly not me. In fact, I usually have no idea who won the race or my AG, whether it was a tight finish or someone ran away with it, etc. Edited by brucemorgan 2009-09-08 11:02 AM |

Never, ever wear a shirt or hat from a race that you have yet to compete in (like when you pick it up at the expo the day before the race). It's bad joo joo. I bought my Boston jacket before the race in '07 to avoid the crowds and wore it a few times before the race. Jinxed me for life on the course ..... |

Regular 255![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() PA | Subject: RE: Not another tattoo thread!I saw a few people wearing IMKY tri tops and bike jerseys on race day that were sold in the expo. I thought that was bad mojo or they must be REALLY confident about finishing. I was too scared to even buy anything before I finished the race. Fortunatly I convinced a vendor to let me stash a bike jersey, shorts, arm warmers, sweatshirt, jacket and hat the day before the race. She was the nicest lady and told me I had to come pick it up at 8am the morning after the race. I was there 10 mins early!! |
