Subject: Cape Henlopen Triathlon Thoughts?
I did my first sprint triathlon in Harriman, ny on August 30 and would like to another before the end of the season (the bug definitely bit). The Cape Henlopen one is in Delaware, with the swim in the ocean. A little nervous about that. Can anyone tell me about the triathlon, or the area? From nyc myself.

Thx.

Flat and fast.  Last year the event was in September, so still in hurricane season.  They ended up cancelling the swim and making everyone do the Du.  But since they made it a race day call, they still separated the fields into Du and Tri.

If they do the swim, the run from the water to transition is over a 1/4 mile, so either have shoes ready or prepare mentally for running on the pavement and paved path barefoot.

Well run event, not a lot of flash and spectacle, but a good time.  Can be windy since it is right off the ocean.

Edit: And congrats on your first tri and welcome to BT!!

Thanks Daremo! One more question: Do you recommend a wetsuit for this tri?

Another NY-er racing Henlopen.

Henlopen was my first tri and I’m racing it again this year. I’d agree with all of Daremo’s points. I did the Make a Wish triathlon in Bethany a couple of towns over a few years ago which is also in October. Lots of people did the swim without wetsuits, but I was glad that I had mine.

It’s about as flat as flat can be. I’ve ridden the bike course more times than I can count and about the only “hill” is a 50-foot climb up and over the drawbridge that crosses the canal. The run goes through a pretty State Park.

I vacation in Lewes every year and it’s a nice little town and a fun place to spend a weekend.

Hope to see you there!

If a tri is wetsuit legal, you wear it (as long as you have one).  You are only penalizing yourself if you don't since everyone else will be wearing theirs.
