Subject: training tires-recomendations? Pro race 3
Hey all, I just took off my Schwalbe Blizzard Sports and upgraded to Michelin Pro Race 3's.
Some people have told me that the Pro Race 3's are really just race tires and not going to be very good trainers. (Fast wear, more flats, etc.)

I am thinking about going back to the Schwalbe's for the fall/winter, and save the Michelin's for races.

Any advice?

I've put over 5,000 miles on two sets of Michelin Pro2 Race tires in training and racing, and have good experience with the P3Rs I'm riding now. Tire has good rolling resistance and flat resistance, makes it a good general purpose tire for racing and training.

Some people have reported recent issues with the P3Rs, like sidewalls blowing out.

Ride whatever came on your bike for standard training until the middle of the tread is flat then worry about it.

I use gatorskins for training and GP4000s for races.
I have not had a lick of good luck with Pro3 Race tires at all. I tried them for a bit but didn't finish a single training ride without a flat on them.

I have Michelin Krylion Carbons and love them. There were some questions about production quantities/shortages, etc. but they're pretty widely available again. Rolling resistance is so much better than the stock Bontrager Selects.... also surprised that I went from from a 25 to a 23 and ride is so much smoother.....with higher inflation pressures. Difference in tire quality and tread matters.

X 2 on riding what you have until they're used up. Post what you end up doing. Good luck !

thanks guys. I actually did wear down my stock tires, so thats why I got new ones.
So far I only have put about 30 miles on the Pro Race 3's , and as someone stated there is a lot less rolling resistance, and so far I like them.

So far I've stuck to good/excellently paved roads. I am worried as to what will happen when i start going back out on bumpier rides.

I like to ride at Harriman (NY) , and 7 lakes drive needs to be repaved. Dont want to end up with a flat!

I put over 2500k on my Pro Race (from probably 2004) plus whatever the person who owned the bike before I did put on before I switched them out for my A race.  I'm currently running Pro Race 3s and I'm not exactly careful about where I ride.  I read really good reviews about them - so I sunk the money into them.  I run Michelin Speediums on my 700x23 road bike.

Never had trouble with michelin products.

In my race Sunday there were reportedly 40 flats in a race that had 330 finishers. No problems with my P3Rs.

I rode PR3's on my roadbike for a full season with absolutely no problems and not a single flat...so I can't really say anything bad about them.  My husband LOVES his PR3's and after trying out the Conti GP 4000S for a few hundred miles...he has switched back to the PR3's.  He says he can feel a definite difference in the rolling resistance between the Conti's and the PR3's.  He said the Conti's felt sluggish, rigid and didn't turn well.

That being said...I'm currently riding the stock tires on my Cervelo S2 - Vittoria Rubino Pro Slick's, and they have served me quite well.  I have over 2,700 miles on them with not a single flat (and I ride on rough, pot-hole laden, glass-strewn roads!).  I honestly wouldn't hesitate to try them again.

If you're set on getting the PR3's...the best deal that I've found is at this place.  At $76.95 for a pair, that's even cheaper than the current price at PBK, and free shipping to boot.

1200 miles on my old Pro 3's before a compromised side wall and then another 100 miles when the tread developed a hole in it that required patching to finish the ride. I bought another set for racing, but I'll be rolling my Gatorskins for training.
