I just went for my first ride on my first road bike, so much better than riding on the mtn bike! Avg was 15.66 with my gym bag on my back. I love my bike computer so freakin awesome to see how fast you are going.... Anyone else tell I'm a noob? haha

Well, I live in Dallas, TX and it's flat here... after 5 years of riding... I can keep a 17-19 mph average on my bike on rides up to 75 miles.

Congrats on enjoying your new bike! It will only get better and you will only get faster!

Depends on a lot of things. Distance of ride. Purpose of training session. Climbing work? Is it a race? Typically though anywhere from 16 to 21 MPH.

I avg. around 18-19 mph on the short routes I have around my neighborhood...15-20 milers.  I have yet to get some great distance on the bike so not sure on longer distances.

For my first Sprint Tri I averaged 16.55 for 15 miles...5 miles were on a flat.  A mistake I am learning from.  Have a repair kit with you.

Race day? 22-23mph for the bike split.

For all-around riding probably 17-20 depending on the type of ride.

Sprint or Oly 20-21 mph (averaged 20.4 yesterday at Malibu, a bit better than that in my last Oly in June)

HIM or IM, more like 17-18 mph most of the time

Training rides it all depends on distance and the purpose of the workout...speedwork?  hills?  going long?  Also things like red lights...hard to really sustain much speed in my neck of the woods in L.A.

Did a century a while back and managed 16. Set a goal of hitting 20 in a sprint this year and (barely) made it during my last event. Training rides are in the 18 range.

Depends on the ride, no matter what I'm pushing myself to some extent... don't have a heart rate monitor to be "scientific" about it, but that would be a cool tool for my approach.

If its flat I can cruise at 25'ish or so for a bit, hill workouts more like 15mph and in the general hilly landscape around where I live about 20mph for a "regular" ride.  My numbers get better and better though from when I first started a few months ago.  Rides I now pump out 20-21mph averages on were 16-17mph runs at first.  I think my last race I averaged 24 point something.  Put in the miles and work, good stuff will happen.

Pretty speedy there.  I would like to see how you would do on the 43 mile hilly IM Moo loop for an avg.

19mph for 75 miles? Is Tim towing you?

Rides of 50+ for me are in the 16-17mph range, I can do 20mph for up to ~25 miles or so.

Probably better than you would do on a flat Louisiana course. Cool

I am pretty new to riding, and I live in a very hilly area, so my average is only about 15mph.  Sometimes even slower if I go longer and keep riding the same long climbs.  I have never had the opportunity to ride any distance on flats, but would love to try it.  You guys and gals are speedy!  Hopefully I will get there.

Most of my longer training rides this year were in the mid 18s on flat-to-rolling roads.  Not too hilly where I train.  Managed 20.5 in my HIM on a fast and flat course.

Hey, I can do a 17 mph average for up to 75 miles... buddy! Thus the RANGE... 17-19 mph.

AND... in a sprint race I can do a 19-20 mph average on the bike.

Training: 14.5 to 15.5 MPH

First sprint 17.01 MPH but that was in a torrential downpour
First Olympic 16.5 MPH.

Only been doing this for 3 months.

Depends on if I'm actually training on the bike or not.  Usual rides are 19 - 21 for day in and day out stuff.  23 - 25 for races.

Last October I did the 40 mile Livestrong Ride in Austin and averaged maybe 13.  It was my most rewarding ride because that was my brother-in-law's longest ride ever and the look of accomplishment on his face at the finish made it all worth it.

Sometimes what may just feel like an easy cruise can be your best ride.  In October the bike computer goes away until February and I just enjoy the freedom of pedaling my bike.

JRowe, enjoy the ride Smile

I started biking 15 months ago.  My last sprint tri I pulled a 19mph avg for 17 miles.  Did an 80 mile ride solo Sunday and rode an avg of 17.2.  I'm improving BUT very slowly.  Based on the groups I ride with it seems there is no substitute for MILES and TIME IN THE SADDLE.  I'm 45 and would classify myself smack dab in the middle of my age group whereas biking is concerned.

BTW - Rides in my area are mostly flat

my typical training is around 12-15 mph. I do it on a '94 giant boulder mtn bike with city tires pulling a trailer with 2 kids and stuff. my max sprint tri in '09 21.96 mph over 15 miles flatish course. my last training ride of 34.01 miles was 18.8 mph which felt very comfortable. (the computer does not avg in stops so it is different than a race in that you coast to a red light / stop sign and stop and then have to accelerate again)

I WILL RIDE 20mph FOR 56 miles I WILL RIDE 20mph FOR 56 miles I WILL RIDE 20mph FOR 56 miles I WILL RIDE 20mph FOR 56 miles I WILL RIDE 20mph FOR 56 miles I WILL RIDE 20mph FOR 56 miles
