Subject: HRM newbie question
OK i need a little help here.... in doing my LT test for the run today I realized i forgot to press the lap button after the 10minute mark. so i have 30 minutes of data while running as hard as i can. After looking i realized the stupid garmin program takes the max hr and the min hr and averages the 2 (so it said i had around 140)... in reality i ran 95% of the time between 180-188, and about 1 minute between 80-100bpm when i started the run. So is there a recommended program to use to get acurate results? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.... sorry if this doesnt make any sence, it just didnt seem right

Don't really know the answer to your question, but I have to say that's the most idiotic & useless way of calculating average heart rate I've ever heard of...

Download and use sporttracks. Once you've imported the data from your garmin, you can go to the workout chart and highlight the last 20 mins and see an average (a real average)

I agree with the above, though to be frank if I was sure that I was 180-188 for 95% of the last 20 minutes that effort (and the graph looked fairly evenly spread across that range), I'd just call it 184.  I really don't think that any of these tests are so accurate that a few bpm is going to make a huge difference.  You are going to find that you have to adjust your ranges for conditions (heat, hydration, drift, etc.) anyway, so you shouldn't be wedded to that exact test result in any case.

Maybe those who are better at these things than I would disagree.  I use the results of these tests as guidelines, and adjust from there.

you can also setup a split at 10 minutes (will prob have to do it by distance) so it will show the 10 minutes and the 20 minutes with the average

I'm a bit dubious.  I don't think polar is so simplistic that it takes the min and max HR and splits them down the middle.  I really does calculate the average HR.  If it just so happened to be right in the middle, that's just coincidence.

Do you have it set to take readings at a set interval.  I seem to recall mine had the option to take it every 1 sec, 5 sec, 30sec, or 1 min, (or not at all).

If you have it taking it at intervals, you could average all the readings for the 20 minutes you missed.

OTOH, were you looking at your watch a lot during the run?  If you were, and it always seems to be in a small range, pick something in the middle and use that for your LT.  You probably are within a beat or two which is close enough, really.  Besides, you should be doing an LT test several times a year any way.

That, or just do the test again after a couple day's rest and remember the protocol.
