Subject: Do cycling shoes wear out?
Or more specifically...is it possible for cycling shoes to become less stiff over time?  I'm asking this on behalf of a cycling buddy of mine.  He's a big guy - 6'2", 245lbs, and is wearing Sidi Mega's that he's had for a few years now.  He was wondering, given his weight and large frame...would this cause the stiffness in his shoes to breakdown or deteriorate from use, in any way?   He suffers from some intermittent foot pain, but usually only after consecutive days of longer rides...and is wondering if his shoes are starting to "flex" more from wear & tear (he does ride a LOT - between 800-1000 miles a month).  He uses Ultegra 6600 pedals and his cleats are positioned correctly....so I'm doubtful that it has anything to do with that.

I suppose they "could" although I know some guys that have some OLD bike shoes and they are still fine. The cleats, yeah... the shoes themselves (as long as they were fairly high quality to begin with) It would probably take some traumatic events to break them down.

He should be able to test the stiffness of his shoe with his hands. I have been riding in the same shimano shoes for 10 years and they are still as solid as ever. Though as my weight has changed through the years the comfort of the shoe has been affected. I've been considering inserts with arch support as my feet are a little flat and I've been using extra support in all of my other shoes.

You do need to replace them periodically. Seems like he is riding 6-8K miles a year depending if he rides year round. Makes sense he may need to replace them every year or two.

What type of soles does he have on them?

Has he had a bike fit?

My first pair of cycling shoes did get noticeably less stiff, well one of them did. Turned out the sole cracked.

It's been my experience that particularly on longer rides, too stiff a shoe can be more uncomfortable than too flexy. How old are the shoes, and how long has he had this problem? The insoles that come with Sidi shoes suck fairly hard.

Same here.  I wore a pair of MTB shoes untill the sole cracked.  I still have a pair of shimano MTB shoes that are easily 12 years old and still as stiff as can be.
