I have changed plenty of tires. I can rip one off, inspect the tire, replace the tube, get it back on and inflated and on my way in under 5 mins.

My neighbor has an older Cannondale with some older Mavics. He said he bought the bike in 1996. He hasn't ridden it in about 8 years and asked me to give it a once over. All was fine till I tried to take off the tires. I had to use tools to get the tire off the rim. I chalked it up to an old tire. He brought me some 'less than pricey' FORTE' tires he picked up at Performance. Well I could not get them on. No way, no how even with the pry tool. I tried to put on one of my Vittoria Rubino's on and I barely got it on.

Is there a difference to the older rims? I can't figure it.

No, it is not a 27.

The rims on my 2002 model Trek 2000 were similar.  Not sure if it was a matter of the brand of tire I was using (Michelins) or that it was a lower end wheelset though (Tiagra hubs... no idea on the rim though, but based on the hubs obviously cheap).  I've always just dealt with the agony of putting them on because I loved how the Michelins performed.  Maybe one day now that those rims are on my back up bike I'll put a cheaper tire on and see if it makes a difference.

So I didn't answer your question in the least, but I figured I'd add that it's not abnormal since I have a similar issue with mine.

LOL. I felt totally inept trying to get it on. It was for my neighbor and he was with me. I can't imaging what he was thinking.

It has nothing to do with "older" rims.  It has to do with some tires, some rims, or some combination of the two.  You never know until you run into one that is a b-tch to take off or put on.

I pride myself on being able to put tires on without using tire levers, but there have been some over the years for customers that I had literally broken 3 or 4 tire levers getting a tire off and on.  I hated that ....

One set of my Bontrager rims only works well with Bontrager tires. Go figure.

X2 on what Daremo said.

x3 for Daremo's comments... rims and tires just vary... some combos are tough.
There are a lot of good bike equipment reviews online that include tire reviews. You can do a little research and find an easier tire. I just bought some Vittorias (Rubino Pro), and they went on easy.
