Absolutely!

I went from being a pack a day smoker in October '08 to finishing a HIM this past Saturday, with a respectable MOP time even.

Tell everyone you know you're going to do one, sign up for the race, write the date of it where you'll see it everyday and start training.

Not trying to self promote or anything here, but I did a blog diary for family and friends about how I went from smoking/being hospitalized to finishing a HIM over this past year. I helped me stay accountable for doing things and to look back on what I thought my goals were, how I reacted to my early inability to even run 3 miles or bike more than 20, etc.  If you want to read it or think it might help get more people to quit smoking, then here you go:  http://psychocookie.com

One of the biggest challanges is being able to train consistently without becoming injured. Get a plan. Follow the plan. If something hurts figure out what's causing that pain. Do not try and train through it. Research what type of shoes you need according to your foot type and running style. Buy good quality shoes and repace the after about 300 miles. Ask questions. This site has been the resoucre I come to first with any questions that come up. The community here is super helpful.

Of course you can, a couple of suggestions

- find a training plan, a good detailed one, either here on BT or else where, having all your workouts spelled out makes it easier to train when you know what you are doing that week.

- if your city has a tri club, join it, go out and train with them, pick their brains, you can learn a ton of information from veterans that could take you years to figure out on your own.

- train your weakest leg the hardest.

Good luck to you

Which HIM are you looking at to complete.
