Subject: HIM Training & Run Question
I'm currently training to run my first half marathon this Nov. The week before the race, my training plan begins for my first HIM. I planned it this way so I can really work on my running which is my weakest event. With the half marathon over, my mileage will be up there but my HIM plan starts the running off slow. My question is how should I arrange my running sessions for the rest of the HIM program once the half mary is over? Should I a) cut it back a bit and build back up to the race distance, b) Run say 4-6 mi. 2x/week and one long run say 13 mi. and focus on improving my times or c) kick it up a notch and add more miles?Right now I'm leaning toward a mixture of b & c. Kicking up the miles in the build phase and then dropping thing back a bit to focus on speed and improving my times at the race distance during the peak.

I'd keep the running programme the same up until the 1/2 marathon. Take the first 3-7 days off runiing after that race and then do what ever the 1/2 ironman programme says to do. Better to start off slow at the start of the programme and make it to the race rather than burn out half way through the plan.

That's IMO, I've never had a similar situation to you so just take it with a grain of salt

I had a similar situation.  I finished one HIM with a training schedule I didn't really like, and started a different training schedule for another HIM 12 weeks out.  The second schedule was much more aggressive, but still started the run portion off slowly.  I followed the schedule and dropped my millage back down, because there were lots more biking and swimming that the previous plan, so I didn't feel like I wasn't getting enough workouts in.  That being said, at about half way through, I started bumping my running miles up quicker than the plan called for.

This differs from your situation because a HIM schedule will have less running than  the Half Mary schedule, just because there is soooooo much more stuff to do.  If you keep up your current running, and incorporate the biking and swimming from the plan you will probably get beat down pretty quickly.

P.S.  I am no coach.
