Subject: achilles tendon pain
I'm having problems with my achilles tendon hurting.  It's not a really bad pain, just enough to let me know that it is irritated.  If I ice it and take an anti-inflammatory, then it feels fine.  So my questions are these:

1.  If it feels OK after the ice and anti-inflammatory, then is it safe to run on?

2.  What causes achilles tendon pain in the first place?

3.  Any idea how long it usually takes to heal?

I guess I'd like to be able to still run as much as I can without causing additional problems.

Thanks for any input!

I suffered with Achilles pain when running for a while. Even after an unplanned 4 week break from running, the pain came right back on the first run. I went to my Physical Therapist and he told me it's an overuse injury. Since it's on one side, that side must be getting more stress than the other. He claims my lower back was tight on one side, tilting my pelvis and putting more pressure on my right foot when I ran. I was skeptical, but I did the stretches he recommended. It worked. After a few weeks my right Achilles tendon stopped hurting.

Was dropping in to ask the same question.  Did you have a sudden mileage increase? This can put strain on the tendon and was probably my mistake.

Personally, I'd like to figure out how to get rid of it . . . do I stay off completely until it heals? Keep at it with the ice and ibuprofen? Seeing OP took a 4 week break and is still dealing with the injury doesn't make me especially excited . . .

Achilles Tendinitis

What It Is Tenderness in your lower calf near your heel that usually strikes when you push off your toes
You're at Risk Men with a BMI of 25 or higher (a man who is 5'10" and weighs 175 pounds, for example) who run a nine-minute-per-mile pace or faster
Why The Achilles absorbs several times your body weight with each stride. A faster pace and additional body weight put even more stress on this tendon.
Prevent It Strengthen your calf muscles (with your toes on a step, lower and raise your heels). Stretch your calves (keep your heel on the ground, lift your toes back toward your shin).
Others at Risk People who regularly run hills (the Achilles has to stretch more on inclines) and who have increased their mileage more than 10 percent per week (sudden increases in mileage strain the tendon)

I injured both archilles when I switched to beach running.  I've been going the ice and ibuprofen route with PT. I also found a chiropracter that does active release and he has been helping  a lot. I haven't run in 6 weeks but I started running this week as my tri is in 10 days.  The archilles is a little achy but no increased pain.

So maybe rest isn't the total answer, that's a bummer that after 4 weeks it didn't go away.

I had a really great run and just kept running.  It felt awesome!   It was more like a 33% increase, so not huge. I figured if I didn't have any pain, I was probably good to go.  It was about 4 days after that my tendon flared up.

Do I have a total green light for cycling?  Is it only running that is a major problem?

Also, in HS track I had hip pain, and got fitted with a heel lift on the same side.  I used it for about six months and didn't have any more problems.  I wonder if I need to go get another one.  I read somewhere (sorry can't remember where  now) that a heel wedge can work as a temporary type of device.

In general you can do things (like cycling) that don't cause pain.

All this said, I'm no doctor. I'm a software developer. Take this advice with that in mind.

My sports MD did tell me that I could cycle if it didn't bother me.  Which it hasn't.    I've been doing a lot of stretching of the area, and things like light calf raises to strengthen the calf muscle, step ups and step downs off of a stair.  I also use tigers balm to the area.  Hope this was useful

I know you're not MD's.  I more wanted the opinion of people in the trenches that have been there.

Thanks for the info!  I think I've got a battle plan worked out.

Just got this email back from my PT:

"THere's a number of different approaches you can take on this one. it depends on the symptoms you are having relative to the following time frames: When you first wake up?, when you are just walking around?, throughout the day?, before, during, and after you run? Those are some of the things that would have to be identified before you could put together an appropriate plan of action here. Let me know."

More to come . . .
