Great read, thanks for sharing. Interesting finishing times, as well.

Awesome article.  I love the sentence: "It did not seem right that thousands of people should witness a man suffering as he did."  It's now so ironic in so many ways.  For one... it would no longer be "thousands" but now "hundreds of millions" and the most obvious... 'watching a man suffering as he did'.... how many times have you watched "the crawl" from Kona '97?

Based on those finishing times though, I live in the wrong century... I would have a chance at being an Olympian back then... well, not winning it, but I could possibly have come in 27th and beat that Canadian. ;-)

Most notably (for those who love the history of the sport) this was the first marathon to use the distance we actually run now.  And after this race the distance of 26 miles 385 yards was established.

Trivia question for those willing to take a non-Google stab:

What is the reason they changed it from the 24 and change they were doing to the 26.2??

I always thought it was the distance from Athens, Greece to Marathon, Greece?

That would be so the Queen could see the finish.

So the Queen could see the start, I believe is the correct reason.

The distance of 26 miles was the route from windsor castle to the olympic stadium in london (was 24 but route had to change (don't remember exactly why) ) .. the .2 was for a lap in the stadium to finish in front of the queen's box

Winner winner chicken dinner.

(Of course, "So the queen could see the finish" is also pretty much correct, but this is the full answer).

Wasn't it a combination of cobbles and tram lines?

I'm sure the guy that got disqualified (if it was today) would be claiming his garmin had the course at over 26.2  so he really is the real winner...

nice article though

Apparently Wikipedia trumps Spirit of the Marathon. Stupid documentaries and their poor research. I should watch it again to see what they really said.
