Subject: Aero helmet for MOP rider?
I just spotted a good price on an aero helmet, and am considering purchasing one.... Would I look like a total poser in an aero helmet as a MOP/FMOP (for my AG, not necessarily overall...) rider??

Rumor is aero helmets are the best `bang for your buck' purchase when it comes to improving speed. I would recommend buying it and seeing how it works out for you. Who cares what other people think!

Who cares? You're wearing spandex in public, what else is there to go further with it?

If you want one and it won't hurt the family to buy, why the heck not?

Why would anybody care what kind of helmet you are wearing. If you want the helmet then I would buy it.

I just got one and wore it my last race.  I had one of my best bike splits ever.  I don't know how much the helmet helped, but I know it didn't make me any slower.

If you can afford it, then I say go for it.

If you're good enough to keep the bike upright and in control you can use the helmet.

Okay.... you guys talked me into it!

For small-headed folks like me, if you're interested, you can score a Giro Advantage 2 Aero helmet at Performance for $80.... (size small only)

I use a Giro advantage 2. It does fit snug, so I actually usually use a medium but had to go large with this brand.

BTW the aero benefits are even greater for a MOPer than an FOPer with an aero helmet, so YES you should use it.

Lucky for me I have a tiny head! Hopefully it fits.....

Just a caveat about the Advantage 2: they have a tendency to crack at the earflaps. Happened to mine, I've found ten other local triathletes who attest to the same problem. I had my LBS replace mine under warranty, then sold the replacement and bought something else.

That's what I ride with too.  Got it a couple of years ago at an ok price and does the trick.  Can get a little warm sometimes in hot weather but worth it.

...and even if it doesn't make you that much faster you will feel faster because your ears are covered and you can hear the wind wrapping around your head once you get up to speed.  Gives you extra motivation.

This is true for me as well.  Cracks aren't too bad yet but they are definitely there.

I'll be honest - I know exactly what you're saying in terms of looking like a poser if you're a MOPer wearing one of those.  I'm the same type of athlete, and I'm not sure I'd put one on.

A helmet like that screams "i know EXACTLY what I'm doing out here, and everybody else better watch out!!"  Then when they passed me on the bike, I'd feel like a total - trying to buy my way to the front.

I know that way of thinking is stupid, and it's just a stupid mental hurdle, and a stereotype of aero-helmet-wearers, but I just wanted to let you know I know where you're coming from.  Knock yourself out and buy the helmet, maybe one day I'll get over myself and get one too.

More time out on the course means more overall time saved.  If you do the math for how much time an aero helmet makes for a 4:15 IM bike split versus a 6:30 IM bike split, you'll see that the slower guy saves a lot more time.

Oh wow.  I was going to wait to buy one...but since I'm doing IMFL and will be out there a lot longer, maybe I should reconsider.  Thanks for asking about this....I'm sure a lot of people wanted to know the answer.

Found the same with Louis Garneau Rocket Air 2.  Had to go size larger than my road helmet.

And 100% agree aero helm is worth it.

Yes Yes do it!  The more MOP riders out there with aero helmets, TT bikes and disk wheels the better I look on my inexpensive road bike and $25 helmet Wink

But really, it's your activity/hobby/race etc. so who cares what others think.
