Folks -- Here's a summary of who's in the group based on my reading of the posts so far.  26 persons as best as I can tell -- no doubt Steve will give each of us our own special letter of the alphabet!  You can cut/paste this table in to your profile and you'll be able to access people's logs via the hyperlinks.

A couple of other things.

You'll need to add members to your friends list so they can see your logs (believe Anne, Okey, and Denise all have their logs currently blocked from the public.

And, apologies here, could not find the real name for "bonbon2252" or "retiretotri" in the earlier posts.  I'll tweak the table as soon as I get this info.

Happy Holidays!

Thanks for this Curt.    I have added all as friends (except couldn't seem to do 'handle').   Also cut and pasted the link to the thread but not sure how to do the table.

HAPPY DAY, ALL!!!

I'm just here briefly, braving Jane's mouseless laptop -- what an arduous task!

We're having a great rime, and I'm having fun reading the VOLUMINOUS postings here. Mercy, do I have my work cut out from me when I get home!

For CURT --- the finale name is Lori, the humanoid behind "retiretotri", if you want to add that to make the list complete.

So you all soon, and enjoy to the fullest the rest of the time you have off between now and when you have to return to work (or whatever passes for "the real world".

Anne - You should be able to cut/paste the table in to your training log:

Copy the table from the post

Open your training log

Click edit

Go to the bottom and paste

Click Ok

Should now have the table in your log for easy, handy, dandy access...

Let me know if it does not work

Hello All,

Santa brought me a pair of Livestrong running gloves for cold weather and a Polar heart rate monitor watch. I plan to test out the gloves tomorrow morning. It will take me a while to figure out the watch. I have no experience with using heart rate for training but hope to start soon.

Just a quick check in to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holiday. Santa was good to me and we spent a great day with family We're headed down to San Luis Obispo in the morning for 3 days to meet up with Dave's family for a mini reunion. I'll check back in when we get back. Looking forward to hearing what kind of tri stuff everyone got and see how training is going.

Would like to know how the gloves work and if they are waterproof.   My gloves were drenched on Saturday.    I have used a Polar HR monitor for years (one of the more basic ones, and like it) but am now using an IM Timex.   I like my new Timex because now I don't have to wear 2 watches and it gives me my HR recovery.

When I first started tris, I only went by RPE and ALWAYS overdid it - dizzy and shaky coming off the spin bikes, ellipticals, etc.   So I got some V02 max testing done for running and biking, and then went to HR training to keep me in my various training zones.  Plus, I'm analytical and like numbers.  It has helped me a lot.   Over time you learn how your body responds and it helps you be able to use RPE accurately as well.

Merry Christmas everyone,

I didn't get any new tri gear.   Over the last several years seem to have accumulated most everything I could want.  Have 2 bikes, that I love - my race bike is custom built locally (True North bikes), a titanium carbon fiber. I'm only 5ft tall.      I have pictures of my bikes in my album.   The only thing I really need are a new pair of tri shorts and I would LIKE another tri-suit.    Well, I guess if I think REALLY hard, I could find a few more things I want.  Laughing

On another note - I am kind of excited about last Saturday's walk/run - I actually RAN one full km - first one since last February.   It was pretty darn slow - 7:44 for the km, but it felt good.   I followed it up andother one km of run with a bit of walking for an 8:11 pace.

Catching a plane back to Kitchener tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. and looking foward to getting on a bike again.

Well I went out for a run this morning at 7 am. It was dark when we started but the sun came up during the run. Temperature was about 27 degrees F. The new gloves were really warm and fuzzily nice. They got a little moist on the inside but didn't get cold and soggy.

I didn't take the new Polar HRM because I hadn't had time to try to figure it out. I wish I had! I just started training with a new group that is at the upper edge of my ability as far as pace and above me in distance. Saturday they ran 13 miles and I joined them for 6. The route was hilly and I was surprised we finished the 6 miles in exactly 54 minutes (9 minute miles). I found out today that they had a "Hill Route" that made the Saturday run look a little tame. We all ran the 6 mile route this morning. They picked up the pace since it is half the distance they usually run (but the most I have ever run) and we averaged 8:46 per mile this morning. I had thought they were just teasing me when they said we were going even faster than Saturday because I had no idea how far we'd gone until we were finished and the hills were killer. There were a few times I wondered why I was ever born in the middle of the run. I would like to have been able to see the data from it.

Congratulations on that run!  I thought the 54 minutes for a hilly 6 miles was great and then you do even better today.  Make sure you look after those legs  - nice hot bath and massage maybe?   You said this is a new group that you are training with - had you trained with a different group before or is this a new experience?   I'm asking because I was thinking that there seems to be some benefit training with others because it makes us push harder than we otherwise might.

My husband (Ken) and I joined a local cycling club this past year and riding with them really made a big difference in how hard I would push.   It's not a tri club, but there are triathletes and everyone gets along well.   I liked learning how to do group riding with the pace lines and drafting.   Really improved my bike handling skills too.

It's funny because I don't mind pushing and hurting on the bike but when it comes to running, I just can't seem to get to that point.   I think I might have to look for a running group at some point.

Wow, this thread has really blown up since I last checked! Guess I've got to be more diligent about checking the forums.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays, and that you've gotten some great presents

As suggested by many people, I'm starting my training season with slowly building up my base.  Since it's been a few months since I've run, I'm starting out with the Couch to 5K program, and did my first run yesterday (2.1 miles, alternating 60 seconds on jogging with 90 seconds of walking).  I don't have a HRM, but tried to keep it at an easy pace.  I'm still reading up and learning about HR zones, PRE, etc.  I use the Runkeeper app on my iPhone to track my runs.

A few questions:

  1. Does anyone have the Wahoo key for iPhone, that allows you to receive HR info from HR straps?  Since I already use my iPhone on my run, it seems like an easier option than getting a new HRM
  2. I run wearing Vibram Fivefingers.  Have run and hiked with them in the past, but it's been a couple months since I went running.  When I was walking around this morning, noticed that the outside of my right knee was sore.  Just a twinge, not real pain, but since I'm a new runner with no injuries, want to be proactive in making sure I don't develop any injuries.  Could this just be a tight IT band that i need to stretch? Poor running form? How should I protect myself from knee injuries?

Thanks all!

Jo

Jo - Didn't know there was an app to receive HR info on the iPhone. How interesting. Is it an app, or an actual piece of hardware?

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! We enjoyed a relaxed one - I made filet mignon and potatoes Anna Saturday night for my husband and son, then we opened presents. Sunday consisted of going to my mother's house then to an OKC Thunder basketball game where OKC was victorious over the Miami Heat. (Yay Thunder!) Today my husband and I had planned a 30 mile bike ride, but alas he has caught my head cold. Darn.

What tri-related items I received for Christmas:

A cycle jersey that has a baby chick on the front and says "Biker Chick" on the back.

A pair of merino wool socks for running.

A pair of alpaca socks for running/biking.

For my bike a quick release mounting kit for my Forerunner 305. Also a pair of really nice of aerobars retrofitted onto my road bike. They have spring loaded arm rests so that they pop-up and out of your way when not in use.

It was a banner year at my house!

So, onto my next topic: Race Planning for 2012

I want to complete my first HIM this year, and I'm thinking that I would like to do it in early Fall. I need everyone's input on which 70.3's are preferable. I can't stand the heat so I need something with very mild weather - I really don't mind being a bit cold. I would prefer the bike portion to be super ultra mega flat, same for the run, and prefer the swim to be in salt water (but this is not a deal breaker). Most important is cool-to-warm weather and a flat bike and run. I can travel to most anywhere. I guess I should add that I don't train at elevation so going up into the mountains to race wouldn't be a good thing for me.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks for your comments. I do believe the Pittsburgh Tri swim was mismeasured. I was probably doing 1:20 / 100 yds last summer and am up to (down to?) about a sustainable 1:15 now. There's no reason I would do 1:57 in those conditions. To top it off, the sprint is all down river. (Olympic will be a different story this year as it a starts heading up the Allegheny and ends heading down toward the Ohio).

Dave,

1:15 sustainable is really quick man!!!  Jeez, on my best days i feel good if I hit 1:30 for just 100 meters.

Anne,

Yes I had run with a group since last spring. They hung up their running shoes for the winter a couple of weeks ago. I hated to shut down for the winter and risk giving up all the gains I made this fall so I contacted a guy I knew was a runner. The old group ran 3-4 miles on Saturdays usually. This new group runs 6-22 miles and is training for marathons. I may try to slowly work my way up to 13 over the winter. Right now I am just quitting in the middle of their long runs. Todays was a 6 miler for everybody so I was along for the whole thing.

Your main question was about how much it motivated me to push the pace to be with this group. It definitely pushed me. I'm very competitive. The first day I trained with this new group they were nice and were just trying to see if I could hang with them. Once I passed that hurdle they sort of tried to see if they could drop me on the hill run today. I was determined to not be dropped. There is no way I would have finished that run on my own, and there is absolutely no way I would have been able to do it nearly as fast. If I have people in front of me I am trying to catch it makes me push.

The old group started in the spring and I was then the slowest, worst runner of them all. I slowly got in better shape and by fall had become the fastest. (Not that I am an elite runner, but it was only 4 guys). By the time they called it quits for the winter I really needed a new group to push me anyway.

The high school pool is closed for winter break so I've had to find another place to swim. It's a little farther, more expensive, and harder to park but I've enjoyed swimming at Indiana University's pool. It's pretty inspiring to have giant photos of Mark Spitz and Gary Hall, Sr. looking down on you.The pool is really full and a little cool so it is really fast. There is no chlorine smell or taste so I wonder if they use bromine.

I liked your info on breathing zones and found myself paying more attention to how I was breathing while I was running today.  I will push myself to see where I am when I start panting just out of curiosity.  It took a fair while to look for your original post until I found it on page 6.  I think I will find it useful until I build up my endurance.

Merry Christmas to all and hopefully a happy new year.

Glad you found the info useful.  I noticed you are from Penticton, BC, home of IM Canada.  Actually, the person (Gordo Byrn) that is responsible for the information is a multiple podium finisher at IM Canada.  I think he still has one of the top 5 finishing finishing times in that race.  Anyhow, he was my 1st mentor here on BT and taught me so much about triathlon, training.  We are so lucky to have people like Steve and Gordo that have a ton of experience that are willing to pass that knowledge along to us.  If you are interested on more "technical" details about breathe markers you can find it here:

Merry Christmas to all!

I still need to post a bio but I have 22 people for dinner tomorrow so it will have to wait 'til after this weekend.

Anne - so happy you're back!  Hello Jeff and Trina!  Hello Steve newbies!

Denise

Hi Denise.  Going to do Racine again this year?  I don't think I mentioned that there were a lot of good triathletes that I respect who DNF'ed that race last year because of the heat.

Out of curiosity what equipment have you picked up that turned out to be very useful to you? Or, what wasn't really worth it?  Maybe I can get some good things at a Boxing Day sale after Christmas.

Worth it - Garmin 305 GPS and clip on Aerobars for my roadie.  Both relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of an expensive wheel set or carbon TT bike.

Sementi - 2011-12-24 7:25 PM Christmas Eve started started off with a crash. At 5:00 in the morning I was heading down the stairs to the treadmill in the dark, didn't want to wake my wife, as is my morning routine. Grace, my Jack Russell Terrorist, was proceeding me with her tennis ball (I always toss it for her a few times, run, and toss it another 20 times or so while I stretch and lift). Today she left it on the fourth stair from the bottom and I stepped on it with my right foot and went crashing to the bottom. After a few seconds I gathered myself up and decided I had twisted my twice surgically repaired right knee, it seemed pretty stable so I ran 5 miles and hen swam a mile. I have a bit of a dull ache and probably a bit of swelling.

Ouch!!

I have to get better at the swim, it is very hard at this point, but admittedly I have not put much time/effort into it.

Keep with the swim Chris.  Like you (and a lot of other people) I had a very difficult time initially

BTW Steve, the Xterra wetsuit is here.... but my wife won't let me have it until XMAS morning.  Can't wait to see what it does for my swim (hopefully all good)!!!

Let us know how the Xterra wetsuit is, I'll probably break down and get one this year too.

Will do - won't be able to try it out until 2012 when we get back home.

In the meantime I got my Xterra sleeveless wetsuit for $99 on their website.  I really don't have much of a need for a wetsuit because at this point in my tri journey I'm focused on doing races that are close to home.  Most of those races except a few very early in the season are not wetsuit legal so....  It's not the 5mm neoprene or a full body but for $99 I figured I couldn't go too wrong.....

My 2 cents on training partners, pick them carefully!!!

Started week three of 0 to 1650 tonight - was more manageable than expected. Got new swim trunks for Christmas. I like them a lot, but need to slim down a lot to look good in them. Working on that.

Followed that up with a one hour run. Hour runs are becoming more relaxed and manageable which is a good sign. I think later this week I'll kick the tires on an 8 or 9 miler.

Jo,It Band issues were plaguing me until I started using a foam roller. It has worked great for me. http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=9911

As the new year approaches I am dreading the onslaught of the "New Year's Resolutioners" at my local YMCA. The pool usage will double overnight and won't get back to normal until March.
