Apparently I have until July 17 to decide. This one is going to sell. out. fast.

what-to-do-what-to-do-what-to-do.

I just saw this too...  but I think the DH would possibly kill me, and besides having NO hills around to really train on unless I rent a car every weekend and drive out to the burbs... I'm thinking of doing Florida next year.

Getting out of the city once in awhile isn't a bad thing ...

Believe me, I know - but not having a car, living in the city, and being less than 3 blocks from the lakefront trail doesn't give much incentive to go through the pain-in-the-assness of trying to get out to the burbs.

Having said that, I am trying to set up a couple of bike dates with a friend who lives about 60 miles away... in the hills... lots and lots of hills.

Not owning a car is mind boggling to me. However, I've never lived in a city that had decent public transportation.

WOOT!!!  Better have the credit card ready and entered as soon as that clock strikes noon - I have a feeling this one isn't going to be open for registration for very long.

No kidding! Now DS2 is saying that, based on the cost, he should wait 'till 2015 because he's not sure he'll be able to finish next year. I explained that to do 2015 he'll probably have to volunteer in 2014. He said I should race and he'll volunteer. Undecided

Living in Vancouver I only had my motorcycle (Zeus - I still miss him!), in London we had no car, but we could either walk, take the bus, or take the tube everywhere, and now that we live in d/t Chicago - we both walk to work or pretty much anything else that we need, and just rent a Zipcar or something for getting to races.

I like it, but at the same time - the convenience of owning a car would make going to Costco a heckuva lot easier.

I live in the Motor City.  What is this public transportation you speak of?

Awww - that's kind of a bummer, can you talk him into doing it this year?  Or maybe you can delay a year and volunteer with him this year?

That is all part of my dilemma...

The IM course looks "better" but it's also TWICE AS LONG! DS2 likes the idea of the HIM. Maybe we'll both do the HIM next year and volunteer at the IM, but it's going to be tough to get him to Denver twice in 2 months.

The bike frame saga continues.  BLUE does not have my frame yet.  They are offering me a substantial discount on a Triad EX frame, as in $750 below MSP.  It will only cost me $1200 for the frame.  No, it isn't what I really want.....and it isn't even a blue color......but at this point I am going to take the money and run.  Tim from Carytown is being super nice about it and told me they couldn't do a better deal for me.  I have a block of time off next Tuesday morning for my mamma so I'm hoping Dave can get my bike fit done then.

I am not thrilled with this......but at this point I am going to take the deal.  It has been BLUE who has really effed up here and I am just wanting my bike.  Plus, it gives me a good bit of time to get the fit dialed in and used to the bike.

Not having a car would make it a little more interesting! I might like not having one either, but it would make things like grocery shopping easy the way I eat.

A good thing though is that if you can push yourself, you can develop just fine on flatter terrain. Getting out to hillier areas will be more for becoming familiar with negotiating them, getting a feel for what they're like as opposed to *needing* them for better fitness training. I'll do (relatively) fine going up to something like Horribly Hilly Hundreds. It's actually fun. Not sure if you did it, but Tony has. Running on hills changes the motion, but the bike doesn't, even though it feels a bit different. It's more getting used to the variations in the resistance. It's that different feeling that can throw off one's perception of effort (and that you're going slower), causing them to work harder than they may realize.

You aren't that far away from all the big hills around IM Moo.  You could even take the bus there and ride from downtown Madison.  Good IM training

Ugh...that is so frustrating.  I'm glad they're giving you a good discount, but I wish they'd never told you that you could get the other frame in the first place.  Then you wouldn't have all this time away from your bike and not have it for this weekend.

It really is nice, and as long as you get onto the trail at ridiculous o'clock in the morning, it's not too bad... anything past about 6:30-7am (especially on the weekend) and you're totally screwed.

You still have a bit of time to discuss it and figure out which is the right option for you two.  Maybe try to sell him on the "it would be really cool to be part of the inaugural race" thing?

GRRRR!!! Just reading this makes me angry on your behalf - what poor service on the part of BLUE!!!

I know it's not what you want, but hopefully once you have the bike and get it properly fit, etc., it will work out just fine.

But still... GRRRRR!

Yes, those would likely be much better for many than the HHH ride I mentioned as they don't get too ridiculous. But still can be rather challenging.

Forgot to ask Mon before, where's the general area for the 60 miler?

I did HHH...never again!  Been there, got the jersey.

I think there is some overlap between HHH and IM Moo, but not too much.  You could also ride further West from Madison and get some decent hills.  Miss that area so much.

We do have a month to talk about it, and I'm sure I could talk him in to it (especially if I pay the $675). However, I'm not sure I want to pressure him in to IM training. He's starting his final year of pre-med and working full time. Of course, it's not going to get any easier his first year of med school Surprised

You aren't that far away from all the big hills around IM Moo.  You could even take the bus there and ride from downtown Madison.  Good IM training

Miss that area so much.

... which is exactly where HHH is. Wink Westernmost IMMoo overlaps with Easternmost HHH, but going in opposite directions. The 150k is in my Strava account, and think I remember which ones were the worst.

So I've been contemplating doing 2014 IM Boulder which WAS a 70.3. Well now for 2014 there is also a full IM option (link)

I thought I was pushing myself enough on the flats of the lakefront trail until we went to Madison and rode the IMMoo bike course (or tried to, we got hopelessly lost), which showed me exactly how bad my training had been up to that point.

For some reason I haven't been really tempted to try HHH - I know too many people that have done it and tell me to not ever, ever, ever attempt it!

Sorry, I meant that she lives 60 miles away.

Though for our bike dates, we'll most likely go to her old hood of the Crystal Lake area in IL.  Her DH took us riding there last year and there were hills galore!

It's just a PITA to get to when you have no car.
