To do this, you need to have Google Plus (free). If you don't know, this is Googles version of Facebook. Get Google Plus (super easy to have if you have a Gmail Account), then look for me and add me to your circles. I will see it, and then add you to my circles... (creating one just for Manatee's). We can then pick a day and time to make this happen. Oh yeah baby - this is going to be sooooooo cool! Can't wait to hear all the accents! And your Google ID is.... Chad Musgrove Sadly, while you are unique, your name is not. Email addy please. I went ahead and set up a Manatee "community" on Google+. I invited Chad, Chris and Jen to join since I am connected with them already. Anyone else, please feel free to join at https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/109453443945893510526 I set it up as a private community but if you want to change it to public, just say so. (ETA, privacy cannot be changed but we can always remove it and create a new one.) I thought we could probably do the Google Hangouts in the community? Still figuring out G+ though, to be honest. I found it! Can't wait to do a hangout! Common Manattee's - we need more than 3 of us... We're up to four now! It looks like you need to enable G+ on your gmail account to get it set up. I was unable to send an invitation to Kirsten even after I had her gmail account :-/ Also, I don't really want to "own" the community so I've made pretty much everyone a "moderator" so they can should hopefully be able to add people, etc. I did... |

What a relief coming here ... it's like coming home. I'm so angry about the Bali Tri that I had to wait a few hours to comment (still not sure what to post on FB) and will wait a couple days to write the RR otherwise it's going to be all swear words. I've done more to promote this race than they have--and I'm not kidding that I had a more exhausting day than Chris Lieto with talking to athletes and having my picture taken with them yesterday--I'm done. #1, always, everywhere, is athlete safety. They completely effed this up on BOTH the bike (far worse than when I crashed 2 years ago) and the run (where last year we were running IN TRAFFIC--Asian traffic--and sucking diesel fumes). Some of my friends got really hurt, many people who came to this race because I promoted it so strongly got hurt, and especially two of our likely-bound Olympics athletes, ones that I brought into this sport and supported and nurtured. At about 12km of 20km sprint course, one of them was sitting on the side of the road, bleeding, his bike wrecked, and I know he got there a LOT sooner than me because I'm just not that fast. Nobody had come to help. I stopped and talked to him and his body was actually okay other than ugly road rash, so I convinced him to take my bike to finish the race and I'd run his in. We swapped shoes (dif pedal sys) but I really couldn't run in his, so I ran barefoot half-carrying the bike (the steering column was totally effed and the wheel kinda stuck on the frame so I had to keep the front bit lifted and wheel the back bit. In that traffic. On side-of-road debris. Temps had reached nearly 100F (in high humidity too) so that pavement felt awesome. I know it was my decision to run the bike in and keep the helmet on--BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE RULES. the RDs and ROs may be mofos--I take it VERY poorly when you, in full knowledge and so it's coming close to purposefully--put my life and loved ones' lives at risk and in many cases resulted in significant harm. But I almost did it to make a point. What point, I don't know, but I follow the effing rules. My water and Gatorade were on my bike and Guscha (my friend) had gone thru most of his, so I did it sans nutrition/hydration. The run course (in order to avoid traffic) was straight up a very steep hill (we're talking car-stallin' twisty hill) and then back down. Guess what. In that heat in the middle of the day after that bike, even for the Oly distance, TWO aid stations (and none till after 2km uphill) that ran out of supplies. Nice. And guess what? No volunteers, no marshals, nobody, and NO EFFING SIGNAGE. I was not in the best frame of mind so I didn't "get it" until nearly 4km that I must have gone past the (nonexistent) turnaround. My feet and I are in pretty bad shape. Although it didn't develop 'til later, I also was right on the border of heatstroke--103F and not doing well--I knew I should call for help (I got home okay) but was so confused I didn't know who to call and couldn't keep anything down ... anyway I've been slowly cooling down all afternoon and while I still have a whopping headache and nausea, can keep fluids down now and the pee is yellow again (not dark) and working on clearer. So I'm angry. Lots of very bad swear words and dental-floss angry. On the bright side, Chris Lieto's clone (the piglet I mistook for him whom I got a date Monday night with) SHOWED UP to cheer me on in the race!!! Totally took care of me afterward as well, got me drinking and in the ocean right away, tended to my feet etc. and got me salty things to eat. I recovered well, so I went home, but then the symptoms really kicked in. Anyway, I'm better. Not great. I'm pretty banged up--even diaper wipes/cream after taking care of the wounds and blisters and raw skin, never mind the cleaning them, is painful. I missed my dad's 100 days for THIS SHYTE? Tina and Mutti called after the race again, and I didn't even have to say much to her--we have that connection--and she is LIVID. She pretty much runs this island and it's going to get ugly. |

I've been itching to compete so I'm doing the bike. I plan to do it sub one hour. The 5 miler is next morning at 8:00 am. Yes. And coming from you, who you are, who you know and where you've been and what you've done ... 't makes me blush. Have a lovely time at HK. I've been reading her Story of My Life, including Anne Sullivan's writings and others' regarding her as well. Have you ever seen the youtubes of her speaking? Incredible. |

Tough day, even without the hills. Woah. It was hot out there bro. And what do you mean without the hills? That SS looked pretty hilly to me. 150K? Strong, strong work. Had thunderstorms go through very early, delaying the start. Roads were very wet the first few hours making the downhills rather tricky. Many of the hills would be 40+ coasting, but there are too many turns on rough roads to reach that often when dry. Sun came out partway through and quickly got busy heating everything up. I think those logged into Strava can see the difference in plot of the power chart under the Performance tab. Wind also picked up quite a bit. Going into it was quite a bit slower than normal. I actually stayed small ring up front at times, which almost never happens without a decent hill. I did this one last year and was ~21-22 minutes faster. None of this is like say, Kona conditions, but still plenty to have a notable effect. I have never done a ride like this. Is sounds brutal, and, yet, oddly appealing. I'm not too far away from there. I'm going to put it on the "maybe" list for next year. What is the traffic like on those roads? We don't really have hills like that around here, and I would consider making the drive just to do part of the course for the hills. I have done much wet riding. I need to do it, but it is a big fear of mine. If I have wet conditions in a race, I'll be in trouble. |

Sigh, and here I was going to ask how your race went. Can only imagine how frustrating it was...especially on top of everything else lately. Seems I need to send honeydew hugs and nectarine nibbles (known to greatly enhance the healing power of the hugs). Oh, crap. That's just horrible, Yanti. I was thinking of you (and all of the others racing today -- there are a lot of them). I wish it had gone better for your racers because I know how much that triathlon means to you. |

Master 2770![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Central Kansas | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)3:20 something for me today. I purposefully didn't run with my watch, so I'm not sure of the exact time and I have little idea of my splits. Here's the down and dirty and then I'm taking a nap. SWIM: Two 750m loops, with a short run on the beach between the two loops. I thought that would be a nice break, but it was horrible -- spiked my heart rate, so I had a mild panic when I got back in the water, but I got myself under control and finished strong. (about 30 minutes?) BIKE: Dropped my chain for no reason. Horrible winds (25 mph at least) The road was worse than last year -- I thought my bike would jiggle apart on one section. Count them -- 7 turn arounds. We climbed the dam 3 times in each loop, so 6 times. That's a killer for me. (about 1:40-1:45?) RUN: Just as I was crossing a wooden bridge heading into the second loop, I tripped and skidded on my left hip and left knee. The knee must have taken the brunt of it because it is really sore now and beginning to develop a large bruise. But I didn't break any skin, so no blood. I still felt like crying. Finished strong enough to outrun someone in my age group for a 3rd place AG. (About an hour?) My transitions were horrible. I had to clean up the grease from my hands before the run. I guess I didn't HAVE to, but I wanted to. Overall, I feel pretty good, just really tired and frustrated about my knee. :-( Edited by KansasMom 2013-06-23 4:17 PM |

The Aracdia's Brute ride from a month ago was the first. The third one (Dairlyand Dare) is coming up in August. The territory is right next to the Horribly Hilly Hundreds mentioned earlier, so fairly close to Madison. I haven't done this one yet, but know it'll be hilly too. It might also be more populated than the others, but don't remember them feeling crowded. That brutal yet appealing part does draw out a number of people, and just like a tri, their ability will be all over the place. I think most will have a final average in the 11-13 mph range. Traffic is very low as the routes really get out to the middle of nowhere. I've been on a few of these and literally see about 1 car an hour outside of the towns. There are a few small towns around, but they generally stay out of them. They're exhausting to do, but it does bring out a great feeling of accomplishment for everyone. I haven't seen anyone who's cared about time. It's more yes/no, or rather which route we did. Definitely need to have a setup for climbing with the really low speeds. |

I'm sorry to hear about your knee :( Hopefully, it will heal quickly. 25mph wind and a dropped chain on the bike--ugh. I hate turn arounds, nothing like a turnaround to kill your momentum, especially with lots of wind and crappy roads. I'm glad you're feeling good about the race, because from this side of the screen it sounds like it was a tough one. Big, big congrats on your 3rd AG! |
