Champion 10550![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Originally posted by KansasMom 3:20 something for me today. I purposefully didn't run with my watch, so I'm not sure of the exact time and I have little idea of my splits. Here's the down and dirty and then I'm taking a nap. SWIM: Two 750m loops, with a short run on the beach between the two loops. I thought that would be a nice break, but it was horrible -- spiked my heart rate, so I had a mild panic when I got back in the water, but I got myself under control and finished strong. (about 30 minutes?) BIKE: Dropped my chain for no reason. Horrible winds (25 mph at least) The road was worse than last year -- I thought my bike would jiggle apart on one section. Count them -- 7 turn arounds. We climbed the dam 3 times in each loop, so 6 times. That's a killer for me. (about 1:40-1:45?) RUN: Just as I was crossing a wooden bridge heading into the second loop, I tripped and skidded on my left hip and left knee. The knee must have taken the brunt of it because it is really sore now and beginning to develop a large bruise. But I didn't break any skin, so no blood. I still felt like crying. Finished strong enough to outrun someone in my age group for a 3rd place AG. (About an hour?) My transitions were horrible. I had to clean up the grease from my hands before the run. I guess I didn't HAVE to, but I wanted to. Overall, I feel pretty good, just really tired and frustrated about my knee. :-( Huge congrats on not only getting through what sounds like a really tough day (I hope the knee heals up soon!) and to get 3rd AG is all kinds of awesomeness! CONGRATS!! |

A brutal single day, but it can be done. Some of my friends do it like that.Originally posted by switch Originally posted by brigby1 It would definitely be a yes/no kinda ride for me. I've never done a century, so I would need to train for that, but if I roll a similar race schedule next year, this would be a good weekend to have something like that.Originally posted by switch Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by switch Originally posted by brigby1 Kickapoo Kicker ride. Tough day, even without the hills. Woah. It was hot out there bro. And what do you mean without the hills? That SS looked pretty hilly to me. 150K? Strong, strong work. Had thunderstorms go through very early, delaying the start. Roads were very wet the first few hours making the downhills rather tricky. Many of the hills would be 40+ coasting, but there are too many turns on rough roads to reach that often when dry. Sun came out partway through and quickly got busy heating everything up. I think those logged into Strava can see the difference in plot of the power chart under the Performance tab. Wind also picked up quite a bit. Going into it was quite a bit slower than normal. I actually stayed small ring up front at times, which almost never happens without a decent hill. I did this one last year and was ~21-22 minutes faster. None of this is like say, Kona conditions, but still plenty to have a notable effect. I have never done a ride like this. Is sounds brutal, and, yet, oddly appealing. I'm not too far away from there. I'm going to put it on the "maybe" list for next year. What is the traffic like on those roads? We don't really have hills like that around here, and I would consider making the drive just to do part of the course for the hills. I have done much wet riding. I need to do it, but it is a big fear of mine. If I have wet conditions in a race, I'll be in trouble. This one is part of the Wisconsin Triple Crown series. The Aracdia's Brute ride from a month ago was the first. The third one (Dairlyand Dare) is coming up in August. The territory is right next to the Horribly Hilly Hundreds mentioned earlier, so fairly close to Madison. I haven't done this one yet, but know it'll be hilly too. It might also be more populated than the others, but don't remember them feeling crowded. That brutal yet appealing part does draw out a number of people, and just like a tri, their ability will be all over the place. I think most will have a final average in the 11-13 mph range. Traffic is very low as the routes really get out to the middle of nowhere. I've been on a few of these and literally see about 1 car an hour outside of the towns. There are a few small towns around, but they generally stay out of them. They're exhausting to do, but it does bring out a great feeling of accomplishment for everyone. I haven't seen anyone who's cared about time. It's more yes/no, or rather which route we did. Definitely need to have a setup for climbing with the really low speeds. Have you done TOMRV? Hadn't heard of it before. Haven't done a multi-day event, but this seems much easier to fit in than something like RAGBRAI which takes a full week. Certainly one to keep in mind. And do know that the Triple Crown events have multiple distances you can do, often 100k, 150k and 200k. The Dare has several more options beyond that. 100k on hills like these is still quite a challenge. I don't think I'll ever do RAGBRAI. I don't want to say never, but it just doesn't sound appealing to me. Good to know that there are different distances for the Triple Crown events. I'm really very new to cycling, so it may take me more than one more year to work up to the bigger stuff. It's hard to get really big hills around here, decent rollers, yes, big hills no. I have yet to break 40mph (I've done 39 though!) on hills around here, and I'm big ring pedalling until I'm out of gear to get there, cadence 95ish :/ Nearly 200 miles in a day? That would be brutal! And keep going with the bike. You might surprise yourself with the gains that can be made. I don't think one of the short routes is out of the question for anyone in the group by the end of this year if they have time to ride. Of the three sports, I think bike power development really reflects how much work someone is putting in the best. It's rather flat around here too, lots of small things everywhere, but hardly anything that needs more than a minute to get over. Often a lot less than that. Only a few places I'll hit 40, and usually have to work some to get it, so I don't necessarily see it that often. |

Ugggghhhh! I HATE MY FACHING JOB! I am dreading going to work today. I really want to quit, but I can't afford to. I can't stand being "stuck". My boss is literally the worst boss I have ever had. He makes every day miserable. I can't stand to see his face or hear his voice. My customers annoy the sh*t out of me. On Friday, I had a run in with a major beotch. She always gives me attitude every time I am in this store. Friday, she had to call the owner of the store to get permission to buy certain wine from me. She has called him before, and hung up before I could speak to him. This time, she grabbed the list of wine and walked in the back room whispering... (I'm sure she says sh*t to the owner that isn't true.) I followed her, and politely asked "when you are finished there, can I speak to June" - she ignored me, so I asked one more time. She turned around and snapped "If you would quit interrupting me while I'm talking" She finishes the conversation with him and gets off the phone and hand it to me repeating "Can't believe you interrupted me while I was talking" I finish my conversation and say to June "I think April wants to talk to you again" (Those are their real names)... April is talking to another employee (complaining about me) so I say to her (very politely again) "April, did you need to talk to June before I hang up" and she snaps "Interrupting me again - NO!" So I hang up - and walk outside to start getting the wine they ordered off my truck... As I'm walking out the door - she is telling a customer "I can't believe he interupts me while I'm talking." I'd had enough of smiling and turning the other cheek... so I said "April - I could do without your snide little remarks today"... She was egging me on, and I fell for it... Damn it Skrat...! She of course hollers something back - but I just walk out the door.. Now picture this - April is a white woman with dread locks and she acts VERY, VERY "ghetto". She has an attitude like there is no tomorrow, and she is not a nice woman. SHE FOLLOWS ME TO THE PARKING LOT AND STARTS SCREAMING AND CURSING AT ME. So I turn around and I say "Bi**h, Wrong guy, wrong faching day! If you think you can stand there screaming and cursing at me, and I'm just going to take it, YOU GOT ANOTHER THINK COMING!" It was like a nuclear bomb went off.... we were screaming and cursing each other in the parking lot. I may not have been right, but I'm not going to just stand there and take sh*t from a beotch like that... Screw customer service. She's screaming at me - and I finally say "You want your Faching wine or not?" She says "you are not coming in my store again." So I said "Good, you can tell June why you don't have any wine to sell on a Friday night!" That stopped her dead in her tracks and she said I could deliver it, but I had to talk to the other guy. As I finish up the order - I tell "Tyler" to let her know that I will not be returning to this store. I will be giving it to another sales rep. I think it's done - of course not... I get home and go for my bike ride. About 2 miles in, my phone rings...I never answer when riding, but I always check who's calling, just in case it's my son, because he knows not to call unless it's an emergency. Keep in mind, I'm reaching into my jersey pocket while riding, and I accidentally answer. It's my boss! (the before mentioned boss that I hate)... He says (very sarcastically) "Funny how you'll answer your personal phone, but not your work phone" (I hadn't realized who it was yet and my adrenaline was pumping) so I say "Who the Fach is this!" He says "it's your boss" and I say "STOP FACHING CALLING ME ON MY WORK PHONE!" He says "Don't talk to me like that" - and I tell him, "I've told you not to call me on my personal time. I'm not at work, and whatever it is can wait until Monday..there is nothing I can do about anything right now - I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF A FORKING RIDE! I didn't answer my work phone because IT'S AT HOME!" He just says "tell me about this argument with April"... FORKING A-HOLE! Leave me alone - it's Friday evening - I'm not at work... ugggghhhh.. I tell him the short version - and he says "we can talk more monday" so I yell at him "We could have had this entire conversation Monday - thanks for interrupting my ride!" (I had to stop for this conversation. Needless to say - It's going to be fun this morning... because he wants to talk to me and I want to tell him to go Fach himself. I don't care about confrontation with him... I'm not scared of this at all. What I can't stand is that I want to go in and just quit. I want to literally tell him to Fork off... BUT I CAN'T. I need the paycheck. This job has drained me this year. It has dragged me down. I hate that I have let it, but I can't help it. I am usually so good about not letting work get to me at home, but this year has been tough. At first, it did not get to me. Finally, it wore me down. My life is a good life, I am generally a happy person, but this year has not gone anywhere close to what I had planned. I am drained pod... I am stressed to the gills, I am beat. I just want to throw my towel in, and be able to do triathlons all the time. Instead, I'm off to blow some smoke up my bosses arse yet again. I'll keep looking for a job and find a better one soon, but in the meantime, this sucks. I feel better just sharing this... getting it off my chest.. thanks for letting me vent.
Really stressful vent and I'm sorry you have had a bad day. A wise man once told me, and it has stuck with me form many years, your perception is what you will receive. Good luck today and I hope you can put this behind you and have a good day! |

Giving your bike to someone else, and the obvious concern you have for the race, the racers and for the reputation of the country as a whole. I think that is why you were there and I also think you did your family proud by being there. |

I did spend the whole day with Chris Lieto and then his wife, so that was awesome. Except he's pretty sick with a chest cold, so they come to me for help in figuring out what he can take that isn't on the banned list?! Ummm ... I dunno, a hot shower? And you're serious that you don't know what alternative remedies/relief you can take (since most decongestants and quite a few antihistamines and cough suppressants are on the banned list, especially since he is IN competition right now)? HAHAHA ... oh man, he is never going to hear the end of this from me. Also, I took both above-water and underwater swim video of him (not to mention one of us racing fly down the pool ... this was yesterday before he got sick) and I threatened to publicly post them if he doesn't rest, use what we did find for him, and get the eff better fast. However, I told him I WOULD be providing a closed (so probably BT albums posted) link just for the Manatees Anyway, Chris, Brennan (the U.S.-side sponsor/organizer) and I will be meeting tomorrow to see if we can save this race. Chris has fallen in love with Bali and the Bali Sports Foundation (for disadvantaged and disabled kids) and really wants to keep it partnered with his foundation, More than Sport (which actually raises money for other foundations). Brennan also understands exactly what I'm going to add in large red letters across everything I've ever written or posted about the Bali Tri AND search-engine optimize it if MANY things aren't merely addressed, but amended (like getting our Indonesian athletes new bikes and reimbursing their follow-up medical care). That's for starters. |

I am back from a great vacation and am trying to catch up on pod doings, but you all are so chatty - what else is new?- that I know I won't ever accomplish that. I see we have two new pod mates, so a belated "welcome" to you both. Congrats to everyone who raced the past 2 weekends; I'm sure you did awesomely! Yanti, I'm sorry your race experience was for shyte, but as others have said it shows your generosity of spirit to give up your race, so another racer could finish his. Good stuff! I too hope the race can be salvaged . On a different note, fachamie has officially entered my vocabulary. I don't know how it did it, bit it did. In fact, while on vacation I used it when I realized I had forgotten something in my hotel room and had to go back to get it. It just rolled off my tongue like I had been using it for years. Love it! |

I was thinking about your trials and tribulations this weekend and I decided that you are a fairly awesome person. OK, I may have decided that before, but I was reminded of that again. Giving your bike to someone else, and the obvious concern you have for the race, the racers and for the reputation of the country as a whole. I think that is why you were there and I also think you did your family proud by being there. You're making me cry! I thought about that when you said it ... yeah. So much of what was good about this race was bringing people back to Bali, a place that's suffered horribly from terrorism, giving back to the community through some really amazing causes, and getting INDONESIAN triathletes established/sponsored/experienced/prepared to compete internationally/etc. Establishing triathlon as a sport in Indonesia, especially for those who are talented but can't afford/access training and equipment. My family, and my dad too I'm sure, really are proud. The "kid" I gave my bike to? (I think of him as my kid brother The trade was technically legal since I "sold" him my bike in exchange for his shoes. He did not abandon equipment on the course (his bike), because he handed it off to an official (me!). This is what he posted on my FB wall (he tried really hard to write it in English so more people would understand it--bless him): "Big gratitude to Mrs Yanti Ardie being my angle. she teach me never give up though you fall in the bike you got injured and bike broken. you must keep continue. Now that's worth an effen cry! In other good news, I was top 15 (out of well over 200 counting relays) out of the water. Chris Clone Piglet said he counted me as 7th but there's this 100m steep sloping soft-sand run before chip swipe--sigh--but oh well, I still held on to a damn good place. That effen Sheila T I hate with her 1000 fly and 1000 kick in "recovery endurance" workouts has done me some good it seems! Also, as usual, the swim course was mismeasured. Every frickin' year! Not as bad as previous years, though. And shockingly enough, I was not DFL either in the bike, run, or the whole race! However, adding insult to all the injuries many of us sustained, there was some serious course-cutting happening (on the bike, likely purposefully ... this happened in previous years as well) ... you gotta get a little suspicious when the top guy pulls out a Brownlee, Gomez, and Lieto-shattering 0:53 on an Oly course (that has a long steep hill in it and shyteloads of Asian traffic). Run course was a fiasco and most of the 5K people ran a lot longer (some the full 10K!) because of no turn sign/marker/volunteer/etc., but there shouldn't have been any course-cutting on the Olympic (no marker there either but it was the end of the road), and there likely was cutting there too. They have not amended the results and the prizes both overall and by category are significant. Especially to Indonesians, for whom the cash prizes mean several months' salary. I still need to do some introspection about this in order to have a clear head for tomorrow--it's just that so much (basically anything actually having to do with THE RACE, duh!) went wrong ... but at least I'm not swearing EVERY word about it now, just every other word. P.S. Chris Lieto took a DNF rather than risk actually trying to race the bike course--he had a GoPro mounted on his bars and the evidence is just damning. He looked at one of the intersections and rather than trying to go through it, just turned back, and rode very slowly through the traffic, stopping, etc., and getting it all on camera. He did do the whole run course. Because he "turned himself in" after the race, he got a DNF rather than a DQ (that's for people who get caught, so to speak). So, that's TWO races I've beaten Chris in now But seriously ... shameful. Effin' shameful. We bring triathlon's greatest cyclist, one of triathlon's greatest, period, and certainly one of the nicest guys in triathlon ... shame, shame, shame!!! Thinking about it, I can't believe he's still willing to even talk to us, never mind in a positive and constructive fashion. But that's who he is. Edited by TriAya 2013-06-24 12:25 PM |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Been swamped. Will continue to be swamped. Mo's memorial was on Friday. If you guys can watch this video, please do. It's one of my besties singing at the memorial. You may have to be my facebook friend for it to work though <iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/video/embed?video_id=10201590004215742" frameborder="0" width="568" height="320"> This memorial was unlike anything I had ever seen. Mainly because Mo had so much time to think about the inevitable, so every single request and detail she had was met (except an open bar at the after party as they calculated the bill would be over 20K with her, uh, "fun" friends It was very cool because they had it in the basketball arena at the University of Washington where she played.
Anyway, sorry I don't have much time to catch up with you all. Hope all is well! Edited by Asalzwed 2013-06-24 12:15 PM |

Really seems to be getting some attention. Lauren Jensen is 46, but either is or was a pro, can't remember if she still has the pro card. Paul Eicher is a pro. Lukas Verzbicas is THAT Lukas. Ryan Giuliano has run pro tri for a few years, but dropped it to concentrate on pro duathlete side (which he's better at). Matt Ancona is amateur, but on the Zoot team. Same as Bryan Dunn for those who remember him. |
