Master 3870![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Originally posted by KansasMom I think you're right, Felicia. It's one of the reasons I'm so happy to have my new hr watch. I can see amount of time in each zone and adjust more easily. Training IN a zone means staying there as much as possible, NOT an average of high/ low. Training in a zone means you're average should be in that zone as well. The zone 2 and 4 you are talking about is like doing intervals.Originally posted by jobaxas Some help - I was advised to train in Z2 for my run and ride, easy enough on the trainer. My z2 max is about 140. On my run I run 2mins, walk 1min. In the walk section my HR is about 120-125, so i figure in the run it could max at 160 making an average of 140. Am I being too simplistic? I don't train with zones, so I may be completely wrong, but that's not how I understand it. If you are bouncing from 120 to 160 in a single workout, that sounds like zone 1 and zone 3 (for example), and not zone 2 at all, except as you pass from one zone to the other. I would think you would want to try to maintain your heart rate at zone 2 for the entire workout. But maybe it does indeed mean an average. |

We went to historic Steveston tonight--I have been working in Richmond (BC, not VA), so we went for chish and fips on the docks and then went for a walk. Salty has dragonflys; we have orcas |

HR zones should have an upper and lower limit, and you should stay in that zone whilst walking or running. Ie. if my zone 2 was 140 to 150, then I would jog until I reach about 147/8, then break into a walk until it comes back down to 142/3. Remember there is a slight delay between your physical activity, and your HR, that is why I walk before my HR reaches the upper limit, because it will still rise for a few minutes even after I have started walking. |

I decided to try to train using heart rate zones. The only problem is either I don't have a heart or my HR strap is broken. Anyone know if there is a way to change the battery in the strap ( I'm assuming there is one)? |

Yes, definitely keep HR in the zone, don't just look at the average. The average will fall in there if you do. When you start going outside the intended zone, the adaptations to that type of training can differ. Many will still get faster, but maybe not quite as much in the way they intended because the work being done isn't quite doing what they think. Darren brought up a good point about thinking ahead with HR as well. Sounds fun trying to keep HR up enough for the walking. |

People used to laugh when I compared the road up to my house to the Westernport Wall ... until we drove up it. Until it got repaved (and still a lot now), we'd know who every single person's first time there was ... they would inevitably stall their car or even motorbike out. Buncha old guys used to just sit in a shaded hut on the side of the road and laugh at the stalled-out folks. HAHAHA ... not funny? |

It's still kind of mind blowing just how much climbing is in that. A number of the hills I did this past weekend were say 400 ft or so. Getting to the 3rd peak in this doesn't look so bad relative to the others, but then it's also 400. Meters at that. So 3 times as high. It's about 5 times as long, so not quite the grade, but still rather notable. Be curious to find more details about the total, but it might be 50% more for the whole course. |
