The foot problem I had for much of AprilMayJune finally resolved itself (it seems), and it's one of thsoe cases where I don't really know how that happened. I was counting on it being a tendon or ligament problem that was maybe rooted in pressure on the top of my foot, so I din't think of it as an overuse injury, per se. I babied it for a while early on, going runless for about two weeks back in late A or early M, but since then I only dialed things down slightly -- and eventually it became okay. (However, as with most weird injuries....I contsantly worry that they might resurface as quickly as they disappeared!) As for meds to help you perform pain-free, well, I'm sure you know the line on that one: Be very wary of "masking" the pain and thus running the risk of seriously injuring yourself. Three ibus is a lot of potential masking! And in a world where we are supposed to "listen to our bodies".......that many meds can create a lot of background noise that the body might not be able to shout above to be heard. Just a caution for you! Good choice of not counting laps when doing TI drills (or any drillwork, really). They are such focused, insular things that they pretty much belie the idea of "laps" or "distance" or "time". (I can be a real sl-- when it comes to counting time and distance....and even I am able to forego that when I'm doing serious swimming drillwork!") I hear your comment about sinking, and if you haven't seen it in the TI write-ups, here it is: fins can help a lot with some of the TI drills! I found them very useful for some of the on-the-side drills, and eventually was able to do those drills mostly okay without fins. (But i am a natural-born sinker, meaning that if I try to do a "dead-man's float", my legs will ALWAYS sink; it's been this way forever, literally.) Going from 27 to 19 is huge.....but remember that you don't need to bridge that gap all at once. That is, iof you are finding the effort too much, or the results kind of questionable, settle for something intermediate and take your time getting down to stuff in the teens. When I began TI I was maybe at 23/24 SPL for 25 meters, and with effort could get it down to 16/17 -- but couldn't sustain that. I was much more comfortable at 18/19, and it took many months of stabs at 16/17 before I realized that 18/19 was best for me. So, in my case, it was a drop-down of about 5 or 6 SPL. I also hear you on managing a great time (in your case a 1:36).....but being drained at the end of it. That's kind of what i was referring to above as "questionable " results, and for me there wer eenough experiences similar to yours that prompted me to realize that what I was producing wasn't at all realistic when it came to hoping for race-day swims at that level. But that could be just me. And on the theme of "just me", here's my two cents on TI: In order to make a low stroke count work in terms of speed, there has top be an effective kick to push one over and beyond the "dead spots" that can be created in swimming long and working at "catch-up" at the top of each stroke. and seeing as how I have a cruddy kick, in time I learned that I could not employ TI techniques and hope to swim faster; that comes, for me, when I elevate my stroke count to eliminate dead spots and maintain constant propulsion via my stroke, as opposed to my mostly-pathetic kicking. I will ask DAVE to look at this post and see what he thinks, seeing as how he is afr and away the most proficient swimmer in our group here (DOUG is a strong swimmer, too........but i'm afraid he has left us. Finally, any swim drillwork is useful, taken in moderation. I find so much of swimming to be tactile, and thus informed by focusing clearly on minute aspects of each stroke cycle. So, well done on slowing down enough to pay attention to the telling details of how your body is moving in the water! I understand the concerns with pain meds. The telling time for me is later in the day or next morning, and there is no pain this morning nor was there any later in the afternoon. Just the slightest hint of soreness that prior to this ankle problem I would have ignored. Previously the pain would last and interfere with my walking later. I will continue with the IBP and ease back on it over the next few weeks. |

I looked at my last Masters workout file (link below), and I averaged 19.2 per length. With that said, the top guys with whom I swim (including the one who's about your height and went to Olympic trials) take 11-12 SPL. That is sick. I think the biggest problem for triathlon is that in the course of an Olympic distance swim, we're going to take 1,218 strokes which is 768 or 58% more than these top guys and use a lot more energy doing it (actually, it would probably be even more of a delta since you won't get the benefit of pushing off the wall). I'm struggling with this a bit myself. But I can do the Distance per Stroke drill pretty well and exaggerate the glide and bring the number way down without feeling like I'm sinking. I think it comes back to body position & aerodynamics because I can't tell you the last time I was in a weight room, and I'm not particularly strong. |

I was reading the RBC Kelowna GranFondo site earlier this evening and it sounds like a good ride but my wife would prefer I wait until September. I have to decide tomorrow and register in person on Friday. |

So sorry that happened to you (and all those that you raced with you). Sounds like a sufferfest! Anne - I, too, want to hear more about your race. Johanne - I am omw to read all about your race on your blog. My trip definitely was an adventure - I need to download more pics onto my FB page. Lake Powell was absolutely beautiful...the water so clear and deep! I got in a couple of amazing and long OWS (one was over an hour) and wanted to do more, but we had so many other things planned. Played golf at the Page, AZ golf course which was super cool. Roadrunners and cottontail rabbits all over the place, and the 16th tee box was on a cliff, with the green being about 150 ft below. Stuck the green, and parred the hole! During our mtb trip we camped literally on the edge of the rim every night - so many beautiful evenings setting around reading and staring at the beautiful scenery after a full day of riding. Had a great time A girl can dream, right? |

The big diff is that you are doing a half-iron and I am doing a sprint, and also that mine involves a swim in salt water (Long Island Sound) and tightly-constained loops for both the bike and run, whereas you are in the Russian River and roam all over the place on your bike and run. This is the one I won free entry to by winning the same-named oly in August. Different venue, though, so it's a new one for me. I might also do Musselman sprint on Saturday, but the weekend is very convoluted and it might not be worth it. I'm tempted, though -- and also registered. Hmmmm. Decisions, decisions..... |

And because you and JOHANNE were in different groups last year, you might not know that her daughter's name is Laura, and that, combined with the last name, Roberts, is the same as my mom's maiden name -- Laura Roberts! And my mom's brother's only son is David, so that name is the same as Johanne's husband's -- David Roberts! Wheeeeeee!

Sounds like a fab race that I would like to try some day - swimming in the Russian River sounds super awesome. Got to see it when I went to visit a friend in Gualala (sp?), CA some years back and it looked so nice. Somehow I can't imagine you being undertrained, but if you say so. I still think you will go out and kick some serious butt!

Between the biking, hiking and golfing, your fitness couldn't have gone too far Johanne The Grand Canyon is beautiful. Simply breathtaking - literally and figuratively. The north rim is a 9000ft elevation, so huffed and puffed throughout most of my mtb rides but it was worth it. Steep inclines and tricky downhills with isolated, picturesque meadows in between. Had lunch in the meadows and breakfast/dinner overlooking the Canyon every day. Highly recommend doing this for people who like to mountain bike. I think that 7 days (4 mtb; 3 hiking) was a bit much - our son was hating on us for keeping him out of civilization for that long, and the altitude took its toll on me. We also hit Lake Powell the week before for the golf, boating and OWS. It was an amazing experience. Best OWS I've experienced with exception to the Caribbean which is hard to beat. But it was a different kind of beautiful - almost like swimming on the moon because there is absolutely zero vegetation and lots of rock and sheer cliffs. It's a flooded desert canyon so it's very unique. I had The Police song "Walking on the Moon" going through my head throughout both of my swims, except I substituted "Swimming" for "Walking." lol! Steve - Yes, I remember you pointing out the serendipitous nature of both my husband's and son's names when I first joined your group last year. Husband = Steve; son = Bradley. You were quite giddy about it. I heard on NPR where 50 years ago something like 80% of the US population was named one of the top 10 names of that time; whereas now that is not the case. Furthermore, people who are politically liberal are giving their children traditional names such as Henry, James, John, Jane, Abigail, Mary, etc, vs. the politically conservative who favor new, original names such as Kayleigh, Cullen, Callyn, Cooper, etc. While working in the health care field I experienced a good sized sample of young people who presented in the hospital ERs with names like: Budweiser, Barcardi, Chardonnay, Jack Daniels, etc, so I'm inclined to think that people are starting to name their kids after their favorite alcoholic beverages, but I do live in Oklahoma so that may explain a lot. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TRINA - NOW I remember that coincidence........but it doesn't speak well for the condition of my medium-term memory that i had fogotten it. Hmmmm. Along with other things changing, my eyes have finally evollved back to where they were when I was a teenager and did not legally require corrective lenses when I drive. Of course, the flipside to this is that I need more powerful reading glasses -- which I only first needed about 3-4 years ago. So, it is kind of nifty that I can drive in just plain old sunglasses as opposed to prescription ones, but I continue to get more helpless with things like phonebooks, if my readers aren't close at hand. But the memory issue.......well.......no quick fix for that. Mostly it's pretty good still, but it's those odd slippages that cause me to pause and ponder. I am turning 63.5, exactly, tomorrow, so I can't expect to have anything approaching a photographic memory, but still........ Yes, yes, YES! The G.C. is spectacular, beyond what one's expectations of it might be. And photos never quite do it justice, failing to fully capture both the breadth and depth of the canyon. And the Colorado river, trickling lazily along waaaaaay down there --- it's so darn cute! |

I love the map for it, too -- round and round and round he goes! The elevation is also interesting, suggesting that with each subsequent circuit your body was, um, slumping? Good HR data, with your average clearly representative of working hard, but the max not really over-the-top; you've suffered much higher, haven't you? I'm impressed by your commitment to tough run sessions. Most people find multiple reasons to avoid them like the plague, but you just dive right in and -- ta-da! You emerge from them none the worse for wear, and seemingly ready to have another go at them in a day or two. Cool beans! Keep working on your cadence, and from what you said a few weeks ago after Savagecamp assessments, that'll probably come from running less erectly; that is, with a bit of forward lean. Or have you retreated from that approach until the post-season arrives? if so, that's not a bad choice, as radically shifts in running technique can result in radical injury issues (I sez, speaking from vast personal experience). I still owe you a couple more; hang tight! |
