michgirlsk - 2012-12-11 3:05 PM So I posted this on the main forum but no responses. (Or maybe I'm just inpatient... Tongue out) Anyway, so for my nonprofit (which is a 501c3), I was thinking it would be great to incorporate triathlon.  So I was considering perhaps approaching a local race management company or a local triathlon store to see if there are opportunities for collaboration/partnership/something along those lines.  I am wondering what type of things I should approach them with.  What is in it for them, and on the flip side, what type of things should we (the nonprofit) ask for as well?  I'd be curious to hear your ideas!

Samantha I did see your post and I have been thinking about this. I think it depends on what you are looking to get out of it for your nonprofit. I would think the benefit to the race mgmt company or local business would be that they would be giving back and helping the local community as well as getting there name out there out showing that they are active in the community. I think from your side you'd want to get sponsorship or funding to further your nonprofit's mission. I think there could be many things that you guys could do that would benefit the local youth that you are trying help.

Thanks Tony!  I think as far as the triathlon support, the primary would be the promotion for us, and then of course, money to go along with it is always nice... which in triathlon's case, I feel if we are able to partner with a triathlon-related org, the reach could lead to money. In reaching out to the tri orgs, I think it would be a great avenue to get the word out about ourselves.  I guess I wasn't sure if "it's for a good cause" would be a good enough reason?!  We are also going to try for a new initiative which at the moment we are calling Impact Giving for Small Businesses, in which we will be approaching small businesses in the community, and for this will be sponsorship as the primary, and getting the name out secondary I suppose... although really, I think they go hand in hand here.  Anyway, with this small business initiative, I was thinking I would love to make triathlon a part of it!!!

I just read this on the main forum and though it worth reposting in case not everyone saw it.  It's a reminder:

You are fast

I was half way through reading it last night when my services were deemed important...............................To make chocolate chip cookies.  Sorry!  I may be fast but I'm not that fast.  I thought the article was pretty funny and true.  This applies to running and swimming as well.  It's even mre true today than it was a month ago, before Lis did her first 4 miler, then her second and now is planning a 10k..................Yep!  She's an addict too.

As stated in the article, you're fast if you are a participant!  It's really that simple.

AND BTW, I guess you I have to say it now Warren, "You're fast."  There I said it.  (I think I just threw up a little.)

My trainer ride was an adventure today!  I was doing Week 7 / Day 3 of Jorge's plan.  It's a fairly short one but intense.  The munchkin kept wanting to talk to me.  I felt bad that I couldn't talk to him.  Then, in the middle of one of the 50 bazillion hard intervals, he says....."I have to go potty!"  I told him I wasn't getting off the bike so he better go into the bathroom and do it himself.  I can see the bathroom from the trainer.  It took him a little while but he did it ALL by himself!  I was so proud of him!

OOO, that is big stuff! I remember going through this with my kids and not very long ago. They have learned, when Mommy is on the trainer she is NOT getting off so deal with it or fix it yourself. Sounds mean when I type it out like that but I help them with everything all day, they can give me an hour or so.

This is too funny! Reminds me of the other night when Zach kept asking me to spell "school" over and over. I was at the 20m mark of a solid interval and could barely spit it out, on top of that he wanted me to show him how to make an S, good thing he has a 9yr old sister! :)

Good thoughts.  I remember running in high school with my youth pastor who was training to run a marathon.  In his mind he was a basketball player, not a runner.  And after struggling through some 10 mile run and wondering if he would finish his marathon, I reminded him that less than 1% of the Earth's population could do what he just did.  Probably less than 1%.

And another thing...There are very few triathletes who I would concede defeat to before the race.  I figure they need to earn victory over me, not have it handed to them.  So even when I know they can beat me, I wish them luck and tell them I'm coming for them.

I'm a very gracious loser and am honestly happy for athletes when they beat me.  But I like the competition and think it makes us both better.  So when someone is clearly better than me, I just say that I'll be beating them next year...or the year after that...with a smile.

It's like that kid in middle school I admired so much who would stand up to the bully.  He would stand up, fearlessly fight, get bloodied and do it again the next day.  He had courage and an untameable spirit...I try to exhibit that in triathlon.

This is cool and shows a great parenting strategy.  By not getting off the bike you were really setting your son up to succeed or fail on his own.  By being willing for him to 'fail', he reached a new milestone in independence!

We miss too many opportunities to advance our children in maturity because we aren't willing for them to fail at something (usually because it causes us more work or more headache!).

And it's hard for you and Warren to talk about your kids in the room while you ride because I can't help but think about hands getting in the spokes!

I used to be all about martial arts (think me and triathlon, but with Karate)...I would practice for an hour or two each day and my daughter Jordan would have been about 2 or 3 at the time I'm thinking of...I went to launch a side kick and as I drew my knee back across it hit her forehead because she had snuck up behind me.  It lifted her in to the air, laid her body out horizontally in the air, and it seemed like she hung there in space as time stopped.  Then she fell flat on her back.  Yikes!  She was basically unhurt because it was thigh muscle just above the kneecap that hit her forehead and she landed flat on the carpet.  I was mortified.  I never threw another kick at home without looking behind me first!

Please watch your kids and your rear wheel on the trainer!

Does anyone get regularly scheduled deep tissue massage work done?

I know that when I do, it definitely makes me feel better.  What I'm wondering is, how much would it help for longer distance running.  I'm pretty sore from running anything 8 miles and over.  My right leg is very clearly weaker than my left.  It's the only thing that is sore and is the first thing to fatigue when running.  My 9 mile run this week just stunk.  I'm not so concerned with the fact that I'm going slow, but with the fact that I just feel crappy running anything over 6 miles.  I wonder if scheduling some massage appointments may fix or help this.

Jonathon, my wife definitely believes in deep tissue massages.  She does Ultra's and generally gets one a few weeks before and shortly after the ultra and her long practice days in excess of 20 miles.

Is everything you mean by 'crappy' described above?  If it's just the leg you are talking about then I think it's a no-brainer that the massage would help to speed the recovery from the soreness.  And the leg will adapt shortly.  It has me thinking that your runs are too long though.

And your right leg may not be weaker.  Consider the possibility that your running gait is unbalanced and you are taking more weight on your right leg.  There have been times when I had a sore leg on one side and took up extra load on the other leg (a self-induced 'limp' if you will).

I just wanted to throw this one out there to you guys in regards to exhaling while swimming. Since I started working on the bilateral breathing and going every third breath alternating right and left I have not been able to choose a comfortable way to exhale. I have been doing it through my mouth but I still find I exhale a little before I inhale. I would prefer to exhale through my nose my it sort of throws my rythym off. I can't explain it but it is sort of distracting but I think that would be better if I could just get used to it. What do you guys prefer and is one way better than the other or is it just one of those things where it comes down to comfort and personal preference?

I don't know if one is better than the other, but I breathe through my mouth.  It would seem as though you are able exhale more air through your mouth, so in that sense, I would feel as though that is preferable especially if you're saying you're having trouble fully exhaling.  I feel this is something that just takes some time getting used to.  It reminds me of a simple exercise they teach little kids when they start taking swimming lessons.  It will seem silly but: take a kickboard and outstretch your arms in front of you so the kickboard is out front.  Put your head down in the water, exhale (blow bubbles!), turn your head to the side and inhale, repeat.  It seems very elementary, but this is what they teach when you're first learning to swim!  I'm not sure if I'm clearing explaining this exercise though. Tongue out

Samantha thanks and yes you are explaining it correctly and I did that when I first started as well. I think since I switched to breathing to both sides I go longer without breathing and for some reason it just seems like it is an instinctive thing to exhale before I inhale. Maybe it is just something I need to get used to doing. When breathing to one side every other stroke it just seemed much easier.

I would be hard pressed to say there is a way that someone must or should breathe.  But I personally find it works best to both inhale and exhale through mouth and nose simultaneously.  I simply found that doing this helps me relax my throat and chest which makes the breathing more 'satisfying'.  Don't know how to explain it, but any tension on the inhale or exhale and I can't seem to get oxygen from that lung full of air.

I am sure you are saving some breath to exhale at the last second to blow water off your lips.  Exhaling completely before turning to inhale often brings in water from the face/lips in to the throat, especially when we are at the novice level.  And so we make this an ingrained habit.

The 'relaxed' type of breathing I have been trying to develop takes air in slower and it brings it in through a larger mouth opening and nose so that the air speed is slower...which has it drawing in with it far less water.  And I've also developed the relaxation to the point that I can handle it if some water does find it's way to the back of my throat as I breath, I just ignore the tickle and either exhale it or swallow it.
