Not Tri related but want to share...

Exh A had a track meet last night he ran the 800 and the mile.  At the mile he was near the back of the pack and I'm over in the corner yelling at him to straighten up blah..blah..blah  GO!!!!  He really looked slow.  Come to find out he ran a 6:10 mile!!!! HOLY Cow.  Unfortuanately his competition won with a 5 min mile.  Where do these kids get their speed? LOL    He asked me to help him train to get faster.  I just laughed because I know it's not going help for this year and he never listens when I tell him to go run but I told him to get ready for hill repeats!!  I'm evil!  Is it any wonder he ignores me. LOL

Kelly--I am not up on all the abbreviations...I thought you were talking about an ex husband and a 6:!0 mile, but I am guessing I am wrong???? Help this old fart!

Today was one of those days....you have a swim workout and you think there is no way in HE*& you can do it. Me doing Max efforts is crazy, but off to the pool I go to give it a go. Guess what?  I did it....I achieved something that three months ago, I never would have attempted.  I learned even I can have different paces in swimming and while I am not going to set the world on fire with my blazing speed, I can be faster.   A really good way to end a Friday.  So for those who might be doubting their ability today, don't.  Amazing things can happen if you really put your mind to it.

Well, I said I was faster, not fast.....so I am not taking any betsIf I get out of the water, unbloated from swallowing too much air and can ride like the wind, I will be a happy gal.

PS. I have determined when things are right with my running, things are right in life.

I just assumed it had the same meaning as what I refer to as THING 1 and THING 2 and THING 3 (even though there is no THING 3 in The Cat in the Hat).

I hope to start tapering off the drugs this weekend so I can return to work next week after my post-op follow-up.

I had some fun toys come in the past few days:
Born To Run
Chi Running
A pair of Vibram 5fingers

Hopefully the doc clears me for activity next week and I can start getting back on the bike and light running as well as maybe in the pool if all looks like it is healing well!

My butt is starting to get flat from sitting around so much.

Hi MGee's I'm back from my vacay in AZ. This group is hard enough to follow on a regular basis, I didn't even try while traveling. I'm back home now with my first sprint tri of the year under my belt and did some nice AZ rides with a BTer I planned to meet up with. I also ran into another fellow BTer I know online at a tri shop.

I hope everyone is well and I will try to read a few pages back to catch up.

Terrific job, Sam!!!  That is a tremendous achievement...one that I hope I can one day get to.

I did a 500yd TT this morning after a warm up of about 1300 yds of various drills and did it in 10:35, which for me is pretty good...probably not as good as I wanted...wah...wah...wah...but I did try my best.

Suzy, exh A refers to Kelly's son, i think, exhibit A and I think he did indeed run a 6:10 mile...she has an exh B that she sometimes refers to, so I imagine that is another child   Don't worry, I was totally confused until I read her blog and figured out the context.

Roni!  Sorry about the injury and heal up, lady!

I am officially done for the week!  I have a rest day tomorrow!

Nice job on the swim Suzy.

We had a little power day at Masters swim today also.  He had us rotate stations consisting of strapping up to the weight rack and swimming, bungee cords, parachute, sprints, then some crazy drill throwing and diving with a medicine ball.  Needless to say my legs were toast for my 5 mile run this afternoon.

Well, John, looks like I'll be in Galveston drinking beer with you all and cheering, but that's about it. Just got back from the podiatrist and he thinks he sees the stress fracture on the x-ray, but ordered a bone scan to confirm (Thanks for mentioning that Suzy). He put me in a "boot" for 8 weeks and said no running or cycling. He doesn't even want me to drive, since it's my right foot, but that's really not an option. He said Texas 70.3 was out and didn't look very hopeful about IMCDA either. Really, it was everything I had feared and then some. I had a good cry on the way home. I know they're just races, but...
I did get a green light on swimming, so I guess I'll train like a swimmer. I also think I'll find a physical therapist to get some more ideas on things I can do, as the pod seemed to think I should just sit on my butt for 8 weeks.

FIND A NEW POD!!!

Seriously, though, that just sucks Roni. Totally sucks. I am so sad for you. I hope that things don't all go that way and that you can get back to other things (i.e. cycling) sooner than that. Meanwhile, get those gills on!! Please keep us posted on anything you learn, OK? When do you get the bone scan?

I'm so proud of the fishies out there today. Really, it warms the cockles of my heart to see people embracing the chlorine (and the dark, murky waters that will be our realities soon!). Keep it up, ladies and gents!

I will say that I did an OWS "simulation" in the pool today... just got in and swam (pushed every 4th length). And it didn't take me long to start thinking, "Hmmmm... 2.4 miles is a longer swim than I realized. Hmmmm... still swimming and not even close to 2.4. Hmmmmm... how much do I want to hop on a bike and ride 112 miles right now? (And this pool is not even a cold lake!)"  It really made me feel in awe of everyone who is not a swimmer and takes on this challenge. I don't think I could do it if I didn't have the experience behind me.

So hat's off to all of you who have come into this from other areas. I am beyond impressed. Seriously.

Roni

I am really happy to hear you are still planning to come to TX.  I still don't have the green light to run yet, so may be finishing my day in T2.  We can hang out with my husband and cheer on the rest of the group.

Did the doctor tell you exactly where the stress fracture is located?  I think you said the top of your foot which is different from mine (4th met, underside of the bone mid shaft).  If you don't know, the bone scan will give you a reasonable location, not that it matters much since it still has to heal the same way.  Please be careful pushing off the wall.  I totally eliminated it and just used the other foot.  It is a long haul, but do your best to avoid all setbacks by testing it.  You may miss a few races, but you have many more to come when you are healthy!

ahhhh that sucks!  sorry to hear this.  i'm really glad you and gary are still coming though.  I had some thoughts (lookout!) for you since you like the crazy long events and like to travel.

  • USMS long distance swim calendar here
  • two swim's around key west. one  two (apparently they don't like each other very much)  should be on the MG list for 2011!
  • Alcatraz.  Lots of peeps do this. Kim mentioned Pedro.
  • Lake Tahoe.  Karen did it. (watch the hug when she finishes)
  • Catalina island.  pay no attention to those HUGE shadows that look like great whites swimming below you.  you'll be dead before you know it so its all good.
  • More people have climbed everest than have swum across the english channel.  here is the channel association site.  no wetsuit allowed.  water temps high 50's to low 60's.  have a look around the site.  for training they recommend you start taking cold showers and sleeping with minimal clothing on with the windows open to "toughen up" many months before your attempt.
i was surprised how many long distance swims are out there.  so don't fret.  there's something to hold you over until you resume your crazy adventures.

Thanks for cheering me up John! Love all the swim ideas, especially Catalina Island LOL

Suzy- mine is in the 2nd metatarsal, close to midshaft, think it's on the top of the bone but not too sure about that. I hope you do get to run in Galveston. Either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing you and cheering everyone on. This will actually be the first triathlon I've watched ever!

Doug- I will definitely look into aqua jogging. Thanks!

Kyla- My thoughts exactly, but I don't think I'm going to find one that tells me what I want to hear. I do think a PT might work with me a little more on what I can do training wise though. At least I hope so. I'm still hoping to be at IMCDA with ya. The bone scan is Tuesday.

MG- Thank you for all the kind words and healing thoughts! You all are awesome!!!

If you have paid for both the races I don't see any reason why you couldn't do the swim portion of the races?  Just hand in your chip when you get out of the water.  NOT A BIG DEAL AT ALL in my opinion!  At least you can get something out of it?!

Again really sorry!!

BigReub - 2010-03-11 11:50 PM I'll be saving some shoe money (and I was on the verge of a new pair of Adidas)...
I'm officially off the road.  After feeling great on my 5 miler this past Sunday...about 1.5 hours later my achilles was a little tender.  Took a few days off, but occsasionally, even walking around the house I got a little "shot"  Today tried a run...I'm out.

Looks like a lot of bike time for me.

Robin's been complaining all week about me being in a pissy mood - now she knows why.

Reuben,  I'm sorry to hear this.  Maybe time on the bike and in the pool?
Rest up, plenty of time to get back into it before the season "starts".
Take care
