Subject: RE: Is It Just Me Or Are The New Giant Bikes Uber Cool40isnotold - 2009-09-08 3:24 PM Ouch - tough crowd! I've never been one to discount a bike based on brand, paint, or looks alone. If any of the bikes from any of the suppliers out there really provided a shocking competitive advantage wouldn't all the pros ride them? No, because they are sponsored. If you look at the general trends, you will see a few similar aspects that ALL the main manufacturers are using: 1 ) Integrated head tube/fork design (started mainly by Look, but mass marketed by Felt with the DA bayonet design ). 2 ) Brakes hidden (again, with Felt and their B2/DA to mass market - now everyone does it ). 3 ) Short wheelbase with rear wheel tucked into frame (P3 first mass market design, now everyone ). 4 ) Integrated cable routing. Giant has taken this to the extreme with sending ALL cables through the stem and frame so you do not have any exposed cabling at all. The two most telling things are that BOTH Specialized and Trek came out with their new design in time for the TDF this year and they are both VERY similar to the Felt DA and Giant design. Even after Specialized had completely revamped the Transition they made the Shiv, which is much faster. And after years of development by Trek for LA on the TTX, they completely scrapped that design to go with the new one that they rode this year. |
