cerveloP3 - 2006-04-05 10:09 AM Katie is pug-looking hack

This is worthy of analysis. Pug or Boston Terrier?

Finally this thread got around to something I like.  Basset hounds RULE!

I don't get the indignation over katie couric doing the news while a guy like anderson cooper gets a pass.  at least katie comes from a show that requires her to have a passing knowledge of current events.  Anderson cooper came from hosting the reality show "the mole"...and he was bad at it.

As maureen dowd said in today's column, I guess all that's left is to "see if Katie Couric can be trusted with the Herculean task of appearing on camera for 5 or 10 minutes a night, reading a teleprompter."

I think she'll be just fine...of course I won't be watching her...who wants to watch a talking twinkie.

That is the real shame of it - that the news hour has become an exercise in fluff. Who better to deliver fluff than a twinkie?

running2far - They still show the news?
Exactly.  It's just an entertainment show now.  The evening news is dead, long live the internet.
Anyway, I think Chet Huntley was the best ever.

In 1958 Edward R. Murrow's criticized the broadcasting industry for being "fat, comfortable, and complacent" and television for "being used to detract, delude, amuse and insulate us."

Hey, maybe Paris Hilton can be Katie's co-anchor?

Hah, funny.

Actually, we probably have weightier discussions here than what is found on most TV, don't you think?

Yea, probably.

Here's one problem with the internet age, though. I think most people tend to choose sites that most correspond to their beliefs, politics, ect. That limits our exposure to other thoughts and opinions.

BT is actually, in my experience, one of those rare sites with a good amount of cross polination.

It just makes me wonder what that does to the body politic. In my yut, it seemed that everyone was in synch with zeitgeist. 'Cause, I guess, most people were watching either Chet and David, Walter Cronkite, or Howard K Smith. Now, it's all over the place. Now, the zeitgeist changes so fast that it doesn't seem to be relevant anymore.

Even the word "zeitgeist" isn't used anymore, which proves my point and is probably a good thing anyway.

I just worry a bit about what will hold us all together.

Most definitely!  And we don't take ourselves too seriously.

Renee,

I'm on the anti-Katie bandwagon as well. Wouldn't you love to be operating the teleprompter and stick in nonsense on the screen and watch her read it? Something like, "Good evening, our top story tonight, New York was invaded by an army of pig-faced boys today. In other news, I received a lobotomy as part of my signing bonus."

Hmmm..Old crusty guy with gravely voice vs Cute Perky gal?...I'm picking Katie to deliver the somber, dark side newscast every time, at least she'll bring some window dressing.
The US networks coverage of news is First grade journalism anyway, so who cares who delivers it..its about segments and commercials, hardly hardcore reporting.
For real news, try BBC World or ITN

after peter jennings died i think they all suck. i grew up watching peter, as a kid i can recall falling asleep while listening to him. he was great.

everyone else sucks!!

I'm with Renee. Katie it's like having big bird do the news. (Sorry Big Bird) The thing with the news it should be just that. None of the networks can report without bias. No one can.
Why do think they have some else read it in the morning??? Duh.

Katie probably never wrote a question by herself. Why do think they invented earphones. She is network dolly with nothing more then a face that doesn't offend people. If she could just read the news good but, she cut it one way or the other.

And what happened to I need to spend time with my family it's the most important thing in my life. She'll be gone just as much if not more. Oh well at least there is the nanny.

I sure hope so. Awesome unintentional comedy there!

Couric: "Now where were those weapons of mass destruction?"

Saddam: "There were NO......darn it....too.....cute....must.....tell...cute American newscaster!"
