In all honesty, to me, the M-Dot looks more like a corporate logo than an indicator of the grueling event and background hard work in which it represents.  That is just my opinion though.

Yeah, but most people know WHAT it represents. ... it doesn't require a lot of explanation

I'm quite curious about that.  I honestly didn't until today.  Hells Head logo, Navy Seals, yes but I have never seen the M-Dot before.  That is my point.  It is a bit disapponting to me that had you completed one and I saw your tat, I never would have realized just how much work you put into an event to earn such a designation.  I will print it out and ask a few people around the office today to see how many recognize it.

I really like the tri ones on the first page I would definitly get something like that if I end up getting into this.. if I ever do an IM I'd get the m-dot as well as I am big on tattoos no matter how silly representing stages in your life.  I agree on the not getting the m-dot until you do it.

For almost 2 years now I have wanted to get the trucker mud flap girl on the back of my calves, I wear shorts year round so i always thought it would look funny. lately I have had the idea to try and get them done in cycling outfits, would take some work but a good artist could make it so they are clearly in shorts and a jersey, helmet would be easy

I can't wait till I do this sprint in october and can take a short break from swimming so I can get my half sleeve colored in. I'll be wearing a top with no sleeves just so I can stare at it on the run and bike.

I can't imagine I'll ever finish an ironman or ever get a tattoo, but when I'm sitting around the nursing home with the other 90 year old women, I'd have much more respect for the m-dot than something like tinkerbelle.

I think it's safe to say that only triathletes who give a rat's @ss about doing an Ironman... or who are intrested in them (spectating, etc.)... would know what the M-Dot is.

Most of the people in this world would not have a clue WHAT it is.

Not to mention... most of the people in this world would add up swim+bike+run and think... TRIATHLON! Sure, they would know that person w/that tat likes those 3 sports... but may not connect the dots.

True.
I guess I meant that the mDot logo is very identifiable to other triathletes !

I actually went a different direction.

I keep track of every time I PR in a specific distance by tattooing it on my body.  Now I only have two races down, but I believe it is unique and nothing like it.

I started it on my right side, basically about "nip" high, size is about half an inch tall.  Starts out like:

s1:23.57
s1:19.17

the "s" obviously stands for spint distance, and I "o, h, and i" will represent the other distances when I reach them.

I have one Olympic and one Sprint left this year.  I don't believe I will PR every race that I attend, so I'm not worried about it reaching my right foot anytime soon.

I'm not new to tats, as I had 8 before I started triathlons, so I am quite addicted, and this is an easy excuse to get that ink every now and then

ya know, they have race reports and logs here on BT for just that sort of thing?

Just ribbing, tattoos aren't really for me, but that sure is an interesting way of doing it!   Although it does remind me of Guy Pearce in Memento......

I believe you are right.  My whole point was that it was a shame that more people didn't understand the significance behind it.  It's not something trivial like a local scrapbooking club or something.  I think they need a cooler logo that provides better imagery.

I have no tats.  If I ever do an IM-distance race, I will tattoo the corporate logo on my body.

I also have no tats.  I'll be doing my first IM race this year...but no corporate endorsement for me.  At this point in my life I doubt I'll get any ink.  If I do though it will be a simple 140.6.

But those that have the M-dot on their bodies...I have no problem with that...you've earned it!

I am not big on Tattoos, call me old, conservative, prudish,whatever....but if I ever do an IM I will definitely be getting a M Dot ....matter of fact I might just put it on my forehead just so everyone I meet will ask me about it.

<<<<< I'm going Saturday to the tattoo place with Barqhead to discuss the design details and make an appt. I plan to get the design in my avatar. I am a 2nd generation Clemson Tiger. Clemson is such a huge part of my life and my husband's life. I've been wanting a paw tattoo for at least 5-6 years.

So I saw an opportunity to merge the Mdot and the paw together for a unique IM tattoo (and yes I did one last year).

I never thought I would get a tatt. I always thought that when I was an old lady I'd regret it. Well, after thinking about it, how cool will it be to sit around in the nursing home and tell people about what it means. I'll be the coolest old lady there!

Plus I'm hoping to outlive my competition and kona qualify in the 60-64 age group...

Oh and I'm getting my tattoo in a place that mostly I and my husband will be seeing... on my right hip. I don't plan on flaunting it on a daily basis- just in a place where you'll see it if I mean for you to (bathing suit, etc).  What it means to me and represents for me is very personal. I'm getting it for me to have as a symbol... not necessarily for other people to see...

Who doesn't?

And that is why I got mine where it never shows when I am biking or running... because everyone passes me!

It does show when I'm in a bathing suit... but not in my tri suit. So even before the swim portion, no one sees it.

I actually wanted the M just because I thought people would recognize it ad think triathlon not necessarily ironman. But you are right and I don't want to disrespect it , like getting a Marine tattoo before finishing boot camp. I have the tattoo designed and Ill post pics when I get it.

I dunno about everyone else but I think tattoos should be a creative expression dreamed up between you and your artiste - not a corpo logo. Get a 140.6 stylishly done in typographic treatment. Think of something original about that place that you did your race in and make it meaningful. The best tattoo stories have a story behind them, more than I just did this... Unless of course you want to be "branded".
Just my .02 cents.

I wonder if anyone has ever done numbers like people do bumper stickers.  13.1, 70.3, 140.6, 5k(my favorite).
