Lynne,

Running is certainly not my thing either!  I feel like I should be pulling the Budweiser Wagon on most days when running!  But look where we will be running!lol

You are ahead of me atleast, I don't have a bike yet at all, just the stationary one at the gym. I am very excited to get one however and am looking now.  I know it will be different than using the one at the gym.  We will be fine!  Lets just keep moving.....

Disney Danskin 2005 was my first tri ever.  As a matter of fact, sue (socks) lent me a spare bike so I did not have to worry about bringing mine from Maryland.  All I can say is that it's almost 4 years later and I a still racing.

Here is a link to the race report

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=17749

Highly recommend it, but beware...you will get hooked!

Well ladies I plan to do a mock run of the tri today just to see where I am at and what I really need to work on the most. I'll let you all know how I do later.

Lynne,

I'm really hoping that you've got a great aerobic base.  While the distances in the Disney Danskin Tri aren't great, it's still a 3-sport event covering some mileage.

Please be careful if you've not been training, or at least working aerobically hard for a while!

Just advice - & it's worth the $$ you pay for it...

- Kim

There should be no reason not to use a mountain bike. Many folks do, they just put street tires on them.

I am going to register as soon as they open, IF they got me on the list. Let me know if anyone else gets the ntification that it is open. If I have to cancel, what the heck.

I am ALL for an after race get together.Along with everyone else, it would be good to finally meet you Kim.

Hi's ladies, I have been training for 6 weeks now. I am so excited about the idea of doing the Disney Tri. I have lived in Florida all my life and just became a tri addict. Do any of you have any new info on the race, when I can sign up? I would appreciate any info or encouragement. Are you all new tri girls or prety experienced?

Welcome Tiffany!

I've been checking the site every couple of days & no news yet on when registration will open.

You can sign up to be on their list & then hopefully you get a notice about updates.  Just visit:

danskin.com's tri page

& click the Orlando button.

It appears to be working now.

See you there!! Oh---what part of Florida are you in?  I'm in DeLand.

Wow!  This is turing into quite the event...and after party!  I too am on the mailing list, nothing yet.  I am planning to stay at the Contemporary Resort so lets keep in touch and folks can come to my room to meet up or 'freshin up' pre/post race!

Any non runner tips out there?  That seems to be my slow part.  Seems I just cant seem to get in the grove.  Trying to mix up treadmill and outside.  Walk/ run.  Thanks Rhonda

Thank You so much for the info, I will try and get on that mailing list. I live in Niceville which is in the Panhandle of Florida. It is just a bridge away from Destin. I am also having some trouble with the running. I am just doing an olipical machine at the gym and mixing it up with walk/running at home. Does anybody else still not have a bike? I am using the one at the gym but think i need to be seriously looking into getting one. Any recomendations?

Non-Runner tip #1:

If you haven't run before, I highly recommend Jeff Galloway's Book on Running.  It is THE WAY I broke into running.

I started with baby intervals:

  • 5 minutes warm-up
  • 45 seconds run
  • 2 minutes walk
  • repeat for 1 mile
  • 5 minutes cool-down

As I got better, I reduced the walk to 1 minute

Then I increased to 1:1 intervals of walk/run

Last night's run (on the treadmill) was 25:56 minutes:

  • 1min 14 second warm-up
  • 4.7 mph run pace
  • 2x30 second walk breaks
  • 2x 5.6 mph run pace for 2 min

Felt great afterwards...

Good luck

I used the couch to 5 k program on cool runnings web site. I downloaded the podcasts to my Ipod and went out and did it. Slowly. Like Kim's program it starts you out slowly and builds up over 9 weeks.I am a HUGE fan of this program. It really works.

A man named Robert Ullery made podcasts for the program for each week

http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page4/files/category-7.html

the music is not my favorite but it was easier to listen for him to say when to run or walk than timing it myself.

I went through week 6 then went on my own.

I will have to try the podcast thing. I didn't know such a thing existed. I know for me the timing is always on my mind. I am currently doing 1min run 1min walk. I can't run on the treadmill I am too afraid of falling off. I guess I have seen 1 too many of those videos on TV.

Funny thing happened to me at the gym one day:

It was only my 2nd time ever on the treadmill...I love running outside, but it gets hot early here in Florida.  Tunes were jamming & I was really getting into the zone.  A great song came on the IPod...I closed my eyes...

BOOM!

Next thing I knew I was standing on the floor looking at the treadmill.  EVERYONE in the gym was looking at me.  I thought the guy on the elliptical beside me was going to have a heart attack!

Well, I quickly regained my composure, (being the pulled together coach that I am) & climbed back on the treadmill...

OMG!!! It's still going at 5mph!!!  I almost went off the back again.  Whew, I slowed it down in time.  But, not before everyone saw the look of panic in my face.

The rest of my run that day was done in shame.

The next few runs on the dreadmill (yup, I meant to spell it that way) were hard - I kept waiting to fall off again.

Every once in a while I feel that catch in my throat when my feet don't quite keep up with the band.  But...the great thing about the dreadmill is that it really helps you define your comfortable pace.  Then, when you're back on the road, you know what it feels like to run at that pace.

Good luck - & if you fall off, just remember - you're in good company - get right back on (after you turn the speed down 1st! doooohhh!) Yell

OMG!  KIM YOU HAD ME ROLLING!    Takes a lot to tell your most embarrasing moment to keep others motivated!  I am going to get that book.  I am using the training plan from this site, 20 weeks 3x balanced, I too like it when I know what I am to do daily instead of trying to guess if I am doing enough. I found out how to use my blackberry as an ipod so the runs and bikes inside wont be as loooong!

If you think that's my MOST embarrassing moment...oh well...keep thinking it.

What crackberry (oops blackberry) do you have?  I don't think I can use mine as an IPod, but it would be COOOOOL!

Ok here are my mock results. Almost an hour and ten minutes. Not really happy with my swim time I thought it would be much better. Although I did have to swim in a pool so that could have had a hand in it. Overall not bad I guess.

Swim 7:49
Bike 33:54
Run 27:49

wow good info on this thread.  i don't think i'll do this race next year as i have a few other things that time of year i want to do, but i love the idea of a swim angel!  do all the danskin races have this? i can swim when practicing just fine, but i tend to get very nervous during races and it seems like a good way to do a first open water swim race to help with nerves.

Hi All

I have been looking at doing this race and I think you all have convinced me!  Sounds like a lot of fun.  I finished my first super sprint a couple of weeks ago and loved it.  I think this would be a great relatively early season race for me next year.  I am going to sign up today for the newsletter.  Anyone have any advice on transporting a bike?  I live in Chicago, but love Disney and would love to do this race with you all!

Katie -

Welcome to the 2009 Danskin!  Did you hear we're having an After Party?!?

I think we're gonna trash the Contemporary.  Just kiddin'

About the bike.  I hear it's pretty easy to go to your LBS (local bike shop) & get a box to transport the bike in.  But, with the cost of excess luggage now a days, YIKES!  I think you can rent one in Orlando.  Check out Dave's on the internet.  Don't know for sure.

I'd loan you mine, but...I'm using it to beat you! (seriously, I'll probably catch up with you at the after party).

Looks like from your e-mail you work @ a hospital...me too.  What do ya do?  I'm an ICU RN in my spare time.  Other days I'm a Coach (not tri - Health & Wellness)

Kim-

Thanks for the info!  I will have to look into the whole bike issue, but won't let a little thing like two wheels get in my way. You probably will be beating me, but we can laugh about how you zoomed past me at the after party. (which by the way sounds like a blast)  As for the hospital, I am a 3rd year surgical resident...I am currently taking two years off clinical duty to do basic science research...I have to say I love ICU RN's you all have saved me many a times over. Look forward to meeting you in Orlando Laughing
