eww.. yuck on the whole thing.

1. Too expensive.. 4$ per gallon gas eliminates me from that excessive monthly monitoring fee.

2. $350 dollars for a device that doesn't give real time feedback to the athlete is extremely excessive. A Garmin 405 does so much more, and has no monthly fee.

3. I wouldn't let anyone track my every move unless it was just during a race or I was going to be off somewhere dangerous, and alone. There is no need to track a routine 6 to 8 mile training run on a regular basis. That seems a little wierd to me. Almost voyeurish, and very controlling. If I got home from a training run, and someone was demanding that I turn on my monitoring device.. well, let's just say that will never happen.

Seems like maybe something worth renting for a race, but nothing I would ever buy... at this time. I'll let the early adopters check it out and perhaps bring down the price. This technology will evolve and i'm sure my privacy fears will be eased, but for now, only knowing what I know.. which is not a lot, this is a big no.

Yep, can buy or rent.

It's market is NOT for the athlete. It is for the spectators.
We already have devices for instant feedback. I have both
the forerunner 305 and garmin 705. With the myathlete.biz
product, I am covered on all fronts with my family involved.

The website will allow one to make their device private.
So, the only way a person can see you is if you tell them the log in
info. So, there is no privacy fears unless you elect to make your info public.

For what we spend on race stuff, entry fees, travel fees,
350 is a drop in the bucket, IMO. But, it is great we have so many choices
for training tools.

Once you watch an IM race, with lets say the top pros wearing the unit, I think
you will get an experience watching the race that is impossible to get today.
I know my parents, family and friends have become hooked watching me
race on race day via the MyAthlete.biz real time web site. Am looking forward to having it during Worlds in Vancouver in 2 weeks.

What I really hope can happen is during USAT AG nationals in Portland this year,
is many folks are wearing devices, and there are large screens up, each screen tracking
a different AG, or set of elites. It will be SO much more fun for the spectators to see the
race happening live. And, I know when I was wearing it at Boston, knowing I had folks watching me, sure made me race harder!!!!

Will there be an API/Web Service or any other means to plot the data on a map outside of the sellers web presence?

This would be much more valuable to members of BT if on race day we could show a map with icons representing each member in the race. Keeping the data closed makes it less valuable to people. Open it up, and it's worth a lot more.

Good question, you would have to ask the owners on your first question.

But, one the second question, this is easy, if I understand it correctly.
When I raced Boston, there were 40 folks wearing the units. The 40 were grouped
into 10 folks, and given a different login, Boston1, Boston2, etc.
Each person had a different Icon. So, you could watch all 10 at one time,
or focus on 1.
When I got home I got comments like they were watching me trying
to catch the black square. Now, the production website is close to being completed,
so it will have better presentation.

So, does this answer your question? With what you can do, I do not think the data is closed,
but, not sure I fully understand our question.

h2ofun - 2008-05-22 2:47 PM Well, let me give you two examples. I just used the device at the Auburn Oly distance race on Sunday. I setup a computer at the finish line where Brad would be announcing at 5 AM, and the boss dropped me off at the swim start. So, when she got back, she was able to see my progress through the course, and did not have to stress out that she would miss me coming into T2. When I was out for my training yesterday, I did not have the device with me. I had not told the wife what my training day would be like, since I never know until I am doing it. So, while I was out running on my cross country loop, I kept thinking that it is the pits to know the boss does not know where I am, and she gets worried. Yep. as soon as I got home, the first thing she said is I have to wear the MyAthlete.biz GPS unit so she knows what I am up to. So, for many not worrying about their spouse, family or friends may be no big deal. But, for myself, and many others I have talked to, this unit is a must to help minimize the impact our training has on our families. Dave

Yes, I understand that.  But that wasn't my question.  What benefit is it to the athlete during racing and training?  How will it improve my performance via feedback?

The products main focus is for the spectator. There are plenty of
devices out there for real time feedback for the racer.

So, for ME, the benefit for my racing and training is knowing
the wife, and others know exactly where I am, and how to maximize
their life, w/o me taking anymore of it from them than I have to.
Us Type A's generally do not think much about how we impact others.
This product allows me to minimize this which makes my racing and
training a lot more guilt free.

Once one is done racing or training, all the data from exercising is on the web in real
time. So, I love to go back and take a look at it.

I REALLY hope the IMAZ rumors are true, since I'll be doing this race in Nov. I would love nothing more than being able to allow my parents and family the insight into exactly where I am so that they can have the freedom to roam around and relax a bit more on race day.

Another cool feature would be the ability to view this on a PDA or Windows Mobile based phone. Though viewing a map might be hard, having a screen showing current speed, mile splits, MPH, etc as a dashboard view would be awesome.

There's definitely a HUGE market for this type of device in the endurance sports arena, and just can't wait for it to get here.

I do not believe the IMAZ rumor product will allow you do you what you
and I want. But, the MyAthlete.biz product already can, as was shown
for the 40 of us who used them at Boston, and were tracked by
family and friends in real time both on computers, and PDA's.

Yeah, I WANT the myathlete product badly. I've sent a couple emails over the past 3 months to their info address, but haven't heard anything back. I'm sure they are just seriously busy, but would love to hear or see how the product is coming along and when it might be available.

6 months to IMAZ, so hopefully we'll see some good progress on it by then.

Yep, they are busy. I have been using the unit for the last few months and
LOVE it. My wife does NOT want me to go training w/o it on.
At Boston they told folks they hoped to have a fully working unit
by the end of June. Not sure the status, but since we are hoping to use
at the USAT AG Nationals at the end of Sept, Nov should hopefully
be a non issue.

So, if anyone would like to see how this is working on the test system,
I will be wearing the unit at Worlds in Vancouver on June 7th.
I am running the unit during the day now as I train, etc., so one can log
into the server before and see if working. A unit is going to be with the
RAAM team also, which you can see the website link when it is ready
at http://myathlete.biz/

To see how the unit works, and at vancouver, go to

http://www.myathlete.biz/track

login is ironman
password is ironman123

Very cool stuff. Cannot wait until the production site is running very soon.

Retrieving an old thread again, but anyone have updates on when this thing is going to be available?

I found a similar device that is already out called gpssnitch (you can search if you want more info).  Compared to the service plans of that unit, this model would be a bargain if it's under $20 for constant monitoring.   I guess the issue is that all these devices are transmitting on the cell phone towers for their uplinks so having to incur charges for each packet transmitted.

YES MyAthlete™ will be available Kona. Yes MyAthlete™ will be available at any race in North America going forward. We were at Kona last year doing a soft launch of the firm with prototypes and this year we’ll be there with our first production rental units. So if you want one e-mail us (web site will be updated soon so you will be able to reserve online) or stop by the booth and say “hey” to Andy, Eric, Baker and myself.

Considering the overwhelming response we had at our recent IM events at IM LP, Louisville & Moo I’d suggest reserving ahead of time. We already have had Athletes reserve the MyAthlete™ ATS (Athlete Tracking System) for IM Kona, IM Arizona, IM Florida, Clearwater 70.3, NYC Marathon, Marine Corp Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Philly Marathon, Steamtown Marathon and on and on.

MyAthlete™ - First to market with real-time GPS Athlete Tracking technology to allow your friends and family be a part of your journey.

At the end of the year we’ll have generation two out which is even smaller, sexier, lighter and more capable than what we have been giving out for free at races since the Boston Marathon. We’ll be showing the Gen-2 model off at Kona. If you want one now then rent it because Gen-2 is just awesome. We’ll post on the web site during Kona.

My wife was tracking me yesterday as I busted my hump on a 50 mile charity ride and well, I was paying the price on my 2 hour run this morning. But it was well worth it. Pain is weakness leaving the body as they say. My wife knew based on my pace when to leave the house for the 40 minute drive to get there just before I finished the bike so we could have lunch with her sister and kids. She didn’t waste time hanging around or worrying where I was on the course as she knew every stroke of my pedal where I was. How cool is that! Training is just one of the many cool aspects of this technology.

Prices for rental: ½ marathons: $20, ½ IM and Marathon: $30, IM distance & Ultra’s: $50, really mental races: talk to us. My goal is to offer this at the lowest cost possible. The cost to purchase is $350 and the monthly fee is $25 right now.
