I'm probably wrong for thinking this way, but I was considering this race to have an Olympic to end the season. I probably won't do it if it falls short like this. |

I do not currently own a wetsuit but I think if I need to buy right now is probably a good time so I can get some practice in it. Let me know what you thoughts/advice is. Thanks.

There are concerns from the city of Galveston about traffic tie ups with 2 different turnaround points for the bike, AND then the crossing of 3005 to go back to Moody Gardens. Basically, if a motorist got through the first turnaround, they could get stuck twice more. The community is incredibly supportive of Lone Star and Hi-Fi, but I can't afford to wear out our welcome. Causing major traffic delays would really hurt the cause. Our goal is to have the race successful enough to have two days of races with a full 40K bike for the International in 2009. BUT, we have to get through 2008, and continue to get the support of the community. So, the compromise was to have a 19 mile bike, with a good turnaround at the State Park. Nothing's perfect, unfortunately....and, there are always other considerations for an event. I've also come to realize we can't make everyone happy. We try, but it's an impossibility.... |

New user 6 Galveston | Subject: RE: Hi-Fi Tri I live in Galveston and don't own a wetsuit either. I have been doing the April sprint for the last few years. I am only in the water for 11 minutes. I know the wetsuit strippers do a good job but on a short race I don't think their needed. I have swam at 70 degrees and you really warm up pretty good during the race. It is really a time in the water compared to water temperature that would make the decision. My son wore a speedo in April. He also finished in 8 minutes. |

Jana I wear one because I like swimming in my wetsuit. The water is not going to be anywhere near cold enough to "need" one in Galveston, but if it's legal I wear it. |

Hello to all of our Hi-Fi Tri participants and their families… First of all, we would like to thank you for your patience. It has been a long process trying to make contact with officials in Galveston – they have been overwhelmed as you can imagine, and still are very busy trying to bring order to the island. Unfortunately, the devastation to the island was extensive, and they are still without sewer and electricity, and running water in places. Today they are finally letting residents back on the island to check on their homes, and it will be a very long and hectic day for all involved. After speaking with the Galveston Police, and the Mayor’s Office, it is obvious that Galveston will not be ready for the Hi-Fi Tri event on October 25th. It would simply put too much pressure on an already over-burdened city. At this point we don’t know when the city will be ready, so we have decided to cancel the event rather than postpone it. The good news is that Moody Gardens fared quite well during the storm, and the exhibits and the hotel should be up and running again soon. Once the island is ready for visitors, we hope that you will visit Moody Gardens, as they really need your patronage to recover. We have been assured that the island will be ready for the Lone Star Triathlon Festival, April 3-5, 2009, so please plan to support Galveston and register for the event. Registration opens October 1st at www.endorfunsports.com. We are also hoping to hold a 5k fundraising event at Moody Gardens this fall to help raise money for our friends in Galveston whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Ike. Please stay tuned for info on this, as it depends on the city’s progress in the next few weeks. As far as the entry fees that you have paid for Hi-Fi Tri, we are going to send out an e-mail very soon with a link where you can click and choose what you’d like to do with your entry fee. The choices will be: 1)full refund made via check or credit card, 2)transfer your entry fee to Lone Star Tri (April 3-5, 2009), or 3)full or partial donation (amount of your choice) of your entry fee to a Galveston Relief Fund that we are setting up with the city to make sure that those who need it most will receive direct assistance. We have received so many wonderful e-mails from you, our athletes, offering your help and good wishes. Many of you were also affected by Ike, and we hope that life will get back to normal for you again soon. I did the Quarter Iron and my wife did the Sprint at the Lonestar event back in March. We were with TNT and stayed in Moody Gardens. However, after the event, we stayed at the cabins/shelters at the State Park. Can't remember how much but it had a nice restroom facility centrally located among 8-10 of these little screened in shelters. We set up our blow up matresses and all of our gear inside and had a nice little camping adventure for a few days. There were also little grilles behind the shelters. The Police are going to give me a private tour of the island right after we get through with Longhorn, so we can see where everything is at. LONE STAR IS A GO!!!!!! We're still trying to get this 5K/10K off the ground, but still are awaiting word to see when they think it's good to do. We're also donating all of the extra supplies from Longhorn to Galveston. We're going to drive the box truck down right after the race.... |
