Oct in Florida = Hurricane season.  So it could be interesting.  However, the fall here is typically pretty calm.  Not much rain, not much wind, unless of course we get the aforementioned hurricane.

As for cutoff times, I'm sure they will use a pretty standard time.  Chris is usually pretty good about getting emails back.  If you don't hear from him let me know, I will see him this weekend at the 2nd Crystal River race.

Sounds good - I grew up in FL so I understand hurricane season.  If it happens, I can hit another race or just wait until the Spring.

I am local on the island and can say there is most always a breeze but nothing too bad most of the time....and it is definitely flat though the site mentions the exception of a bridge. There are only 2 I can think of that aren't flat - one at the back entrance of Ft Clinch but it isn't all that step or long and the most likely one I think. Then there is the one coming onto the island over the intercoastal - this one, for me anyway is much more daunting.

For those interested, there is also an oly scheduled to coincide with the 70.3 - I am registered! My first oly - I'd really like to do the half but think I need to have a much better base. My commitment to training has been known to waver. Having this event in my backyard has given me new motivation.

Once the course is posted I'd be glad to report back to anyone interested  with any info I can - though keep in mind I am not as experienced as you guys/gals are.

Oh, that would be AWESOME! I would love to know more about the course.  I really am curious how big the race will be - most people I've talked to haven't heard of it because it's so new.  I love the name of the oly - 'Ameliaman' - I kind of wish they'd named the HIM that!

I sent my money in for the half this week so I am committed. I was hoping to see maps for the swim, bike and run, but they are not on the website yet.

Maybe I'm just a whiner but I really with they'd update the site with course maps and more info.  I know it's a brand new race, but I want to read all that stuff.  I'm excited!!

I got a message back from Chris Moling, the race director, and he said they have been trying to get the maps completed on MapMyRide.com, but they have been having trouble with the edit feature and keep losing the maps. They will be trying a new mapping program. I did a search for bike rides in Fernandina Beach, FL and found an ATC bike route, but I didn't see one for the run. Needless to say, Chris is working on getting the routes up on the DRC website.

Not many in the race, hey, if there are only 3 people in my age group maybe I can finally place! Sweet! I sent my money in for this race a while back, but have yet to see a participant list on the web site. I must be looking in the wrong place for it.

Participant list will not be posted until 4 weeks out from the race according to website.

I have no idea where to stay.  I will probably just choose something off the website.

This will be my first Half IM. TOtally stoked. Was going to do Clermont, but opted for flat instead of hilly on my first Half.

http://www.ameliaisland.com/lodging/hotel.php

Here is a list of hotel/motel/B&B on the island. The island itself is only 2 miles wide by 14 miles long so nothing is too far away. The Comfort Suites is probably the closest although I am not exactly sure about where the start is going to be - still waiting on course details. I hope to meet several of you there. I had planned for this to be my first OLY......but life has gotten in the way BIG time over the last month. I haven't done any training per se but I have been active - jet ski, water ski, softball....alotta family time. No regrets about family time only that I haven't trained more but that has been my problem all along.....I can't seem to keep a consistent training schedule. I go good/hard for a couple weeks then slack off. I did do my first run in a month tonight. I am still planning to finish this race....come hell or high water!

Any advice?

I've had a lot of family time here lately also. I've been told DO NOT MISS my long run. That is one thing I've tried to keep consistent. I have no expectations about this race except to finish vertically with a smile on my face. Can't wait.

There are also some hotels out at the intersection of I-95 and the A1A-200 exit which is only about 15 minutes away. You could also look in Yulee for some "lower" cost, more scary hotels if you are into adventure. If you are coming from the north you could stay in Kingsland, GA or if you are coming from the south there are a lot of hotels near the Jacksonville airport.

The participant list just went up for this race and so far there are less than 150 people signed up. Hopefully, there will be a lot of last minute sign ups as this ought to be a nice race.

Thanks for all the info! I just registered for the OLY. It'll be my second. As far as advice, I'm still a newb to the sport (this is my first tri season) so the only thing I can suggest is to go slow.

Good luck to everyone!
