hey you... for the Great Floridian I just found out that we won't reach that special needs bag until mile 60 or so.

just in case ya didn't know.

I plan to try and pass it, and then get my cool mountain dew when we pass it again at mile 80 or so.

I've only done 1 IM so far. To keep a bottle of perpetuem cold, I also used bubble wrap. I just got a small roll of it at a department store where I found it with the gift wrap and packaging materials. I mixed a couple of bottles the night before. One went in the motel fridge overnight and on the bike in the morning, the other was in the freezer and then rolled in a few layers of bubble wrap for the bike special needs bag.

My bike sn bag contained the perpetuem, a spare tube, and half a sandwich (peanut butter on cinnamon raisin bread). The other half of the sandwich was the only thing in my run sn bag. I didn't need the tube, used all the food, and even though I think a lot of these ideas are great I didn't need anything else that time.

The bubble wrap would work well to protect stuff like a headlamp too.

Also, I carried them with me in my pouch, but kept extra in both my needs bags and i'm glad i did. A ziploc bag with baby wipes inside. The bathrooms are gross sometimes.

bschulte - 2008-09-17 10:59 PM I don't mean to hijack this topic, but this question is somewhat related. I have yet to access a special needs bag on the bike or the run. This year at IMFL I plan on having a loaded fuelbelt in my run special needs bag so I can put the used one from lap 1 in and grab the loaded one. How much time are we looking at to get the bag and do the exchange. Is is a self service thing like at T1 and T2 or do they have it ready for you? Do you have to stop or can you dig while keeping going? Any info would be great.

Special needs I think were lined up in numerical order and you grabbed them.  You can stay as long or as little as you want, but you can't really take your bag and run with it.  You kind of have to stop, grab and go.

I bought individual wet wipes..smaller and easier to carry. I brought some with me and put them in my sn bags. Never used them as it was raining all day so I sort of could wash my hands easily all the time.

I am no ironman and new to the Tri sport, but as a former Marine and a participant in many 5 and 10 K charity runs, I always used a lot of Moleskin.  Not sure if any of you are familiar with it but it is very similar to suede leather with a sticky back to it.  You can cut it to size, peel the back and stick it over a blister.  It acts as another very tough layer of skin and is a miracle worker with blisters.  You can usually find it for a couple of bucks in the band-aid or shoe insert section at Wal-mart.

Are the areas where SN bags picked up also aid stations? (ie, water will be available?).

I plan to put an extra bottle w/ perpetuem  powder in my bike SN and just fill it with water when i get it.

Thank you, I just had a blister pop up today on a long run and was wondering how I'd deal with it during the race.  I'll put it in my SN bag.

Being prone to blisters I was really worried about this issue.  I brought an entire change of socks and shoes for special needs run.  Did a full changeover.  Was totally worth it.  Never had a single blister.

Ok...Im starting to try to get organized for IM FL. I really need advice from those who have completed the IM distance. What is the one thing you wished you had put in your special needs bag?? Now...the following items don't count:

**new legs
**new lungs
**new feet
**another person to run the marathon
**bourbon
**morphine

Ive already thought of those!! Your imput would be greatly appreciated (and aside from the humor above, I really would like some SERIOUS commentary here!!!)

Thanks folks!!!

of all the things I did for this,,, and I had "special needs bags" to the nines.

the frozen cold delicious mountain dew, and dark chocolate milky way were awesome!!!

the perpetum power was necessary, for me, but the goodies were the only thing that MATTERED.

yer gunna do great!
