This update just posted in TAN:

Hello - My name is Dohn Armon and I am a friend of John's family.  Steph wanted to update you but is not up to doing it right now, so she asked me if I would do it.  I am not exactly sure who you are, but your are very important to John, it seems.

At around 10 AM, a social worker came out to see us and asked Stephanie if she would like to call the family or if she would like for hospital staff to do it, as the conditions were not good, and they felt that John's family should be here.  His Mom and Dad live in Alabama and cannot travel easily, so we called three of his sisters and a couple of his Aunts to spread the word.  Most of them live in Cedar Rapids, which is about 30 minutes from University Hospitals, where we are at now.

At 11, or around there, the waiting room was so full of people that they moved the bulk of the group into a private area, except for the immediate family and a few friends.  I walked out into the large area and was surprised to see more than 50 kids and young adults wearing T-shirts from John's charity, all very sullen and worried.  I don't know who any of them are, but Steph says John calls them "his army".

About 20 minutes ago a doctor came into the family room and walked up to Steph.  He is John's transplant surgeon and he had just heard what was going on.  He gave Steph a hug and told her that John was going to be OK, he was going to take care of it.  He went through the Operating Room doors and that is the last we have heard.  We are approaching 6+ hours in surgery now and we still don't really know what the issue is.  Hopefully we will have good news soon.

Subject: Update Re: Prayers Needed for a BT'er

From TAN - another message from John's wife:

Hello - this is Stephanie again.  John is out of surgery and in ICU.  According to the doctor he was septic but they are not sure how he got that way.  This is very dangerous for him because the medicine that he takes to help him not reject his organs effects his immune system and makes it weaker.  They can't do a lot about that, since helping his immune sytem will make him reject the organs, which would cause a whole. larger group of problems than what he is dealing with now.  They just have to treeat with what they can and urge him to fight.  I have never seen him stop fighting before, so I don't expect him to do it now.  He has always said that God won't let him die because he has too much fun messing with him on earth.  I hope that it is true.  If you want to hear John speak a little about his decision to fight, there is an mp3 of a radio show he did a week ago on his website in the links page where the subject was touched upon.

John is at this hospital a lot and in the transplant wing often to meet with new transplant patients and give them a T-shirt and ask them to be a part of the TFT Army.  Today, one of his biggest fans got the call from a nurse in the wing and called all of the members of the team.  Many of them were here as soon as they could get here.  10 of them are now training to do triathlons with John trying to find sponsors to defray the costs for them.  John's transplant doctor arranged to have a treadmill and an excersize bike brought to the ICU waiting room and the team had organized an event to either run or bike in shifts until he gets out of ICU.  The hospital administration has stopped it, saying that ICU is not the place for something like that, though they appreciate what John does for the people there.  I think John would agree.  He hates the attention.

The doctors say the next 24 hours are critical and could mean the difference between life and death.   They must get his system to start to kill the bacterial infections in the blood.  At this point, the kidney is still working.  They are pumping massive amounts of fliud into him and they placed a catheter.  There was a quiet that covered the room when the nurse went to check for output, as none would indicatee that the kidney had died.  There was a way too loud reaction from the group in the family room and an even louder one when the army heard that he had put out more than enough urine to show the kidney still viable.  They are still worried about it and they are quite worried about the pancreas, but I am not sure why.

Hopefully I will have good news soon.
