Subject: RE: An option for overcoming treadmill boredom?New Haven isn't all that much colder than NYC/Brooklyn and I did all of my winter training outside. Purchase the appropriate winter running gear, spend the $ on it and it will LAST as long as you take care of it. Get a hat, gloves or mittens where you can flip the finger part back (manzilla makes a pair), a windbreaker, a fleece, a reflective vest, winter running tights, and even a gator (some people call it turtle fur on the slopes). Figure out your combination of what works for you, but don't be fooled into overdressing - the clothes keep you warm. You will be chilly at first but within 10 min you'll warm up and want to start removing stuff. So make sure your outer layer has a pocket to stash your hat or gloves and vents. Some of my most favorite runs look place in +/- 20 degree weather. My all time favorite run was one evening in central park w team in training in the snow. no one showed up for the group run except us mentors. TV news crews were out looking to find out who was still working out in the snow. It was awesome. Once the temps dip into the teens, which isn't every day in the winter, I would do something else like brave intervals on the dreadmill for 30 min or so (that helps the time go by) or bike or swim instead.
