New Haven isn't all that much colder than NYC/Brooklyn and I did all of my winter training outside.  Purchase the appropriate winter running gear, spend the $ on it and it will LAST as long as you take care of it.

Get a hat, gloves or mittens where you can flip the finger part back (manzilla makes a pair), a windbreaker, a fleece, a reflective vest, winter running tights, and even a gator (some people call it turtle fur on the slopes).  Figure out your combination of what works for you, but don't be fooled into overdressing - the clothes keep you warm.  You will be chilly at first but within 10 min you'll warm up and want to start removing stuff.  So make sure your outer layer has a pocket to stash your hat or gloves and vents.

Some of my most favorite runs look place in +/- 20 degree weather.  My all time favorite run was one evening in central park w team in training in the snow.  no one showed up for the group run except us mentors.  TV news crews were out looking to find out who was still working out in the snow.  It was awesome.  Once the temps dip into the teens, which isn't every day in the winter, I would do something else like brave intervals on the dreadmill for 30 min or so (that helps the time go by) or bike or swim instead.

We have the oposite problem in Florida - it gets too hot down here to run (95 degrees w/90% humidity).

I've found that joining the gym is nice.  I can run on the dreadmill (spelling error on purpose) & "accidentally" drop something on the dreadmill beside me, causing the person next to me to go flying off the back!!

Great fun!!!!  Wink

These & many other entertaining activities can make your indoor workouts more tolerable!

Hope you survive the winter!!!

jimmyb - 2008-09-28 9:51 AM Treadmill runnning can be so boring and monotanous. One strategy I use is to make the runs variable and unpredictable (within reason of course). for example, watch a football game and set parameters eg. a fumble means a 1 minute sprint, interception means increase the grade for 3 minutes, etc. This also works when on my bike trainer. Sprint during commercials, etc. It's still not the same as outside but this helps me tolerate it better.

I often play around with speed on the treadmill similar to this.  Using my Ipod, i'll switch speeds randomly with each song, or do a ladders-up/ladders down type thing.  Or intervals.  Whatever.  Time goes  A LOT faster when you aren't just plodding along at the same speed.

And I second everyone on staying outside as long as possible.  It really is better.

leapdog - 2008-09-27 8:34 PM It's cold and dark here in MN so I hear where you're comin' from. Learn to run in the cold and/or dark. Only icy or deep snow conditions chase me to the dreadmill.

x2

x3. It's barely October yet...you have much colder and darker days ahead of you. Unless it's really dangerous for you to run in the dark where you are, get outside! Don't split up your runs. Ice and snow are deterrents for running outside, but temps are not.

While I appreciate your's and other's dedication to the sport, for me running in the dark is not happening  I don't mind the cold and run outside so long as the ice isn't too bad... Here's hoping the giants play well this year and I learn to love the t(d)readmill!

Yeah I did this once, it was my brand new ipod.  dreadmill ate the thing.  yet another reason they are the instrument of the devil.

I think there was a previous thread on pace booty.  Agreed that with the right "running partners the treadmil becomes more appealing.
