I just signed up myself.  I wasn't planning on doing this distance since I have a little under a year of training under my belt, but my buddy has done this event a couple-three times so he'll help train me.  Plus my wife is encouraging me and said she'll help pick up the slack with the kids when the training weeks top 10+ hours.  I gotta admit I have butterflies about the distance, more so about the run really, but my plan is to do it for fun.  I've training a steady 6-7 hours a week (well, except for this week, lol) so I think I'll be A-OK.

I did this race last year as my second oly and it was great. the lake is really nice, cool and clear...but the bike is windy...nice flat easy run too.

unfortunately I can't do the race this year because of when it falls during the school semester...but I may show up to cheer on Velo in her HIM!!! Go Velo!!

I'm heading to the keys in a few weeks and would like to bring my bike and ride the MiamiMan course on Friday morning or Monday morning.  What will the traffic be like during weekday mornings?  I have seen Kendall drive in the morning and wouldn't dare ride my bike on it.  Is the bike route rideable weekday mornings?

What about they Keys?  Is there a bike lane on US1?  I'm making a stop mid way down for a night and then onto to Keywest?  Is US1 rideable?

Any help would be great.  Thanks.

I ride The Redlands area during the Weeks and it's really nice...not traffic at all...but...If you are going tp leave from Larry & Penny T. Park...where the bike leg starts...the first 2 miles from south to north (SW 127th Av.) is residential area and a lot of traffic...then when you take the SW 216th st. from east to west is less traffic but it's a busy nursery area during the week...but...it's only about 3 miles...then when you turn left in Tenneesse Rd (SW 167th Av) from north to south...from this point to the rest of the course is great....

I really recommend to you to start very early at 6 or 6:30 am...and...you will enjoy the bike ride...

Let me know when you are coming and maybe I can wait for you in some point of the bike legs and ride with you....

About the Keys...there are 2 or 3 person in this Forum that can help you with that information....Hope they read this thread...

Good Luck!!!

If you come down next year we may have most of the broken sections of our overseas bike path connected.  As it stands, you should plan on jumping on one of the paved paths (probably just North of Marathon) on your halfway down ride and choose from several options once in Key West where I am from.

This morning I drove 15 minutes to MM 12 where there is a nice 4 mile bike path stretch from Shark Key to Bay Point (Baby's Coffee) which a do a couple of loops without any interruption.  The wind usually gets you heading east and is a blast returning.  We have had several riders get seriously messed up on US1 while riding on the shoulder so be very careful as many still do this but you only have 3 feet to work with and the cars are doing 55+.  On the island itself you need to get up early on the weekend for the best chance to cruise the town as tourist will take you out most other times of the week.

Great info guys.  We are planning on riding the HIM loop Friday 8/7.  I will PM you my contact info and we can meet up.

Thanks for the info on the keys.  I figured cars/tourest would be a problem down there.

I'm in for the International Distance.

I raced the Intl. distance last year as well. The race is nice enough... it has the absolute BEST swim in all of Florida, I swear... crystal clear! I honestly think I'm doing this race again ONLY b/c I want to get back in that lake. It is sooooo sweet!

A team of us camped at Larry & Penny Park last year and I'm SO glad that we did. Parking looked like a nightmare... just some food for thought.

Just checking to see how everyone’s training is going. I start my first base period on Monday. I have done a few weeks of prep just getting use to being on the bike and running again. In the pool I have mostly been doing drills.

In 2007 the Miami Man awards were coffee mugs. I am not sure if this is a good sign or bad sign but my wife dropped and shattered mine yesterday.

D-Smoke, I'll go with "good sign" in the breaking of the mug.  It is your wife's way of saying she wants a new one.

Velo, Those tigers look scary and along with the crazy new music on the MiamiMan website who knows what they will have this year.

I think I'm 6 weeks in to the beginner HIM plan. Calls for 10+ hours this week which will end up being 12 when I factor in the smattering of strength training I do. Hardest part is finding 2 hours a day to train. It's the third-highest volume training week in the plan so if I can make this a quality week I know I'll have the base to really attack the next 3 months.

hmm, im thinking about signing up for the International distance.

as for keys cycling, well, down here in key west, i get the sh*t scared out of me when i ride on rt 1.  the farthest i'll go is from my house MM5 to about MM8.5 at Boca Chica where i ride around the airstation (with no traffic)  If i combine in Key West loop, i can make it about 30 miles long but traffic severly interferes with a good pull in the saddle.

Hi Everyone,

I'm coming down to Orlando for a conference and saw this and thought what the heck!  Going to do the Oly and just have a blast!  Not a podium person or anything but leaving the wife and kids behind, shipping the bike, flying into Orlando and then camping onsite.

Can't wait!  Have two HM and a sprint between now and Miami!

Don't know too maybe people and may not even have a tent to camp but just camp out in the rental car.  Triathlon the raw way I guess.

Well, going to stick with this thread until the race, but wanted to say Hi from New York!

You are aware that the drive from ORL to MIA is like NYC to Rochester, right?  Just keep that in mind.  And Miami might be as safe as Central Park at midnight - on a new moon....  Might be a better idea to find a fellow BTer or racer to dorm with.
Good luck whatever you decide - just want u to have the facts.  I also live 3.5 hrs from MIA but if I choose to do the race I'lllet you know - I have friends nearby with whom I stay.

Yeah, I used to live in Orlando while I was in the Navy.  Figure Miami can't be as bad as some places...but like everywhere need to keep on your toes.

Nothing like a little adventure...

I don't see any problems...but...

But...You can camp at the Larry & Penny T. Park where is the Race...It's an eaxcelent campsite...and...you will find many Triathletes and tourists there...It's complety safe and night guards...but...if you decided to race the Miami Man...You need reservation in the campsite...

Good Luck!!!

Anyone who's not crazy know of a good hotel nearby.  I did enough sleeping on the ground (in a HMMWV, on-top of a HMMWV, in a landing craft, etc) to enjoy myself when I can.

Hi There,
I am a former floridian but have lived in CO for the past 10 years. I am thinking about heading back to FL for a visit and am thinking of signing up for the race. I realize that there are only a few slots left (Olympic distance).  I know that shipping my bike would be a total pain and  probably very costly since I don't have a bike case or anything. While I would  really like to have my bike with me, I am wondering in anyone knows of a good bike shop where I might be able to rent a bike. (I have a road bike with aero bars.).  I would probably be coming from the  West Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale area so I am not limited to a bike shop in Miami.
From the posts in this thread, it sounds like people really like this race so I  am assuming it is worth the effort.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
Kathleen
