...a mountain lion (out west obviously)...

While the mountain lion (cougar, puma, panther, nittany lion, etc.---all the same animal) is officially 'extirpated' in the east, they do still exist. Cougars, with cubs, have been seen in Maine and Vermont; numerous tracks and sightings have been reported in upstate New York (though, of course, many might have been bobcats.... on the other hand, one 'coyote' that was shot by a hunter a few years ago turned out to be a gray wolf...). In 2004, the Michigan DNR tested a hair sample collected from a vehicle's bumper (!) and positively identified it as cougar; in 2008, several cougar sightings were reported in northern Illinois, culminating in the shooting of a cougar by Chicago police.

They may be extremely rare and endangered in the east, but they are a possibility. You're still more likely to be attacked by your neighbor's ill-socialized housepet, however.

I believe there have been mountain lion sightings here in Minnesota.

Kanders, I am jealous.  I'd love to see a wolf while out running some time.  Count yourself lucky.

I would also say don't worry about one little wolf sighting, in fact I too would say you are a lucky person to get to see one in the wild. Here in Texas we don't have that many wolves, but I have seen a couple of mountain lions and bobcats, which tend to still run away from me. I know that the mountain lions could be a little dangerous, but have seemed completely uninterested in me.

yeah, I didn't want to get into the details about the occurrence of mt. lions in the east - you just hear about attacks out west.  Heck, they treed one near Spooner, Wisconsin a few months ago.

I'm just thrilled by the fact that these once rare (or in the case of mountain lions in MN, long gone) animals are being seen again.

I wouldn't be concerned at all about the wolf sighting. I would think you would have a higher chance of getting mauled by a rabid dog than a wolf regardless of where you are located.

Besides I'm more concerned about the 2 legged predators out there.

Wish I had a beautiful place like that to run/train.

I wouldn't be to worried.  That wolf has probably seen you running that route plenty of times, you just didn't know he/she was there.  There are very smart and trust me, he/she could smell you a mile off.  The wolf probably knows you are no threat and that is one of the reasons you got to see him/her.

i would at a minimum look for something like this to carry with you, it is for dogs but may work for wolves....

http://www.safetygearhq.com/canine-mace.htm

99% of the time i would say daremo is correct, but you will never know if the wolf is rabid or not....

X2

Also a whistle in the pocket is good.  A friend once told me if you are still able to breath after any sort of attack you can blow a whistle.  Hope I never have to test this theory, but it makes sense to me.
