Get a new bike.

Your old one is holding you back. Too heavy, old components, and much more. New bikes have come a long way since that one and there are so many affordable options. It doesn't have to be the carbon one but if it is what you want, go for it. My current bike is a '97 Cannondale R300. It is old is cycling terms and I am ready for a new bike.

Could it be that the seat is too high?

It took me a month to tweak my new tri bike into the exact fit that I wanted. And now after riding that bike for 2.5 months, I'm tweaking the fit on my road bike to be more similar to my tri bike fit.

If I were buying a bike, initially in terms of "fit", I would only worry about the frame size and frame geometry to be correct for my body and goals as a cyclist. I would not trust LBS personel as they can have unknown motivations such as selling me a bike they have in stock instead of pointing me to a better bike.

As long as the frame is optimal for you, the fit can be tweaked into a great fit. You can either hire someone who is truly an expert in fit, or learn how to do it yourself. IMO, it's not very difficult and largely just trial-and-error once the basic angles are reasonable.

Lynnee - 2009-09-17 9:43 AM Hi there

Just taken the bike round the 16.4 mile triathlon route and at the top of the hill about 3/5 of the way round I was 2.5 minutes faster but then rest of the way my left knee started to hurt (this leg is slightly shorter than the other). Could it be that the seat is too high?

[/QUOTE

Maybe, it could just be down to something small, like altering the float on your shoes, or just the fact that your seat needs moving forwards/back.  Do speak to a specialist, or take advice off the guys on BT,as they are v knowledgable and I'm a newbie myself!!

Best of luck.
