I've had mine for way longer then that!  The good news is that my girlie bits are fine as the seat seems to do its job of keeping them free from pressure; it is the sit "bones" that take all the weight (thus freeing up the bits) that get sore.  Going over a rough patch of road can be brutal!

The bones or the crease where your hip and pelvis meet?  It could be that the saddle is too wide if the later.  What shorts do you wear for your long rides?  Does the chamois go down the middle or is it wider (for example, Terry Bella, DeSoto 400 mile)?

Ok, so now I'm sitting in my office trying to " feel" the exact area that is affected so I can describe it to you. My office has a very big window, so anyone walking by will get quite a show! The area is bony - it is the area between the flesh of the inner thigh and the important bits.I wear whatever shorts are clean, but all of them are Desoto. My last long ride I wore the 400s, but they are a bit too big, so I did get some chafing in the crease area.

You might have wider sit bones.  I hear that there is some sort of thing you can sit on and it makes and indentation so the fitter can measure your sit bones and recommend a saddle.   I don't know if this thing actually exists and isn't just a Tri Talk legend, though.

It exists.  I have not tried it but a few guys that I ride with did.  They experienced no difference on saddles sized this way.  I don't recall the name of the product line at the moment.  Anyway, one of the guys changed to a Cobb, the same model that I use which is why I noticed it.

Yeah, that crease area is a problem for me as well.  The wider chamois helps a lot.  On the 400s, I have to pull them up at the thighs a bit to create some slack (attractive, I'm sure).

Yeah, I have to make sure I have a snug fit or things go south pretty quickly.

To be perfectly honest, and at the risk of having a TMI moment here, what really helped was ditching the saddle that was a problem, watching the shorts that I get (wider chamois) and laser hair removal.

I've heard of that too, but I think the saddle is hitting me where it should, it's just after 2 hours those bones get sore. And I'd rather have them sore then my soft tissue. I may need to invest in better fitting shorts.

I am not brave enough for laser hair removal in that area.  I do find that waxing has helped immensely, though.

Someday I'll find a saddle I like.  I am currently using a Terry Butterfly TriGel.  It's ok most of the time, but I still have issues with the girlie parts on long rides.  And now that I am not used to riding my bike everything hurts again.

On the training front: I had originally planned to do a half marathon on November 10.  I decided yesterday that it's probably not a good plan.  I'm not running super consistently or more than 4 miles at a time right now.  I'm concerned that trying to ramp up to the half will cause me to be injured, especially because I'm taking a week or two off at the end of the month so I can finally get my PhD celebration foot tattoo.

So, I'm going to run a 4 miler on 9/22, a 10k on 10/27 (with the family!), and an 8k on 11/10.  After that, I can start working on marathon training and should have a pretty good 6 mile long-run base, which is where I need to start for the marathon plan on 11/15.

Marathon is 3/16/13.  I've been wanting to do this marathon for years!  It's the same day as my very first half ever, so I know the course really well and have always had a good time.

Does that seem reasonable to you guys?  Yanti, I know it's a bit more conservative than I normally am, but you know my injury history.

Now I am not Yanti so take my advice with a grain of salt...

I always think being more conservative, especially with racing, is better. I think your time is better spent working on getting the consistency up (and then mileage) and doing the shorter races. That will set you up MUCH better for a marathon in my opinion.

I was mostly joking that Yanti is more likely to say "RACE!" as that's what she does.

Consistency is easier to build up right now, too.  E is great in the stroller up until about 4 miles, so I can do them with her.  We have some good 2-4 mile runs leaving from the house.  I'm also not mentally ready to start the crazy long runs.  That might sound weird.

If I'm reading this string correctly, you did this to address rubbing/ chafing in the crease area and not because the bones were sore from sitting on them for so long, right? The latter is my main issue and I wonder if I nosed the saddle down a bit if that would help ...

Correct.  Chaffing pain more that bone pain.  More painful to shower after riding.  More painful on second day of riding.

That's nice! I did not realize they did.  I got mine from the LBS.  They let me keep saddles about a month and then swap out if they didn't work.

At the risk of being TMI, I'm kind of wondering if I need a different saddle now after having a baby.  It feels like things are...different? wider? in that area now. I haven't ridden much (certainly didn't log my 15 minute attempts at trainer time), but my sit bones are killing me on this one and they didn't used to.

cdban66 - 2012-09-10 7:06 PM I finally got a few more photos from Alaska up. https://plus.google.com/photos/113601404233718914952/albums/57817595...

Great pics, Chris!  Looks like you had a beautiful trip.  Thanks so much for sharing and for making me thirsty for Strongbow. MMMmmmm, Strongbow...

Strongbow is pretty delicious, but I don't think it is as good as Magner's or Ballmer's.

My friend is a total Strongbow snob. Won't drink any other ciders. But she will only drink it off the tap and not the bottle.

I haven't had the others you mentioned.

I refuse to be a beer snob, the best drink is a free one. I received lots of those when I was playing in a bar band. They were all good!

Meee too.

Well, wait. I do have standards. Anything with the word "ice" or "Milwaukee" or the Jamaican beer Red Stripe. Can't do it.

Agreed, I guess there is a line in the sand. For me it is a white can that says "LIGHT BEER" in black letters. Yes, generic light beer. And a few others.

Some chamois end at or near the crease which exacerbated the problem.

Example photo from Desoto 400 mile shorts.  Some chamois end at the red area.

I bought a pair of those and have never regretted it.  They are my favorite bike shorts along with a pair of Sugois with a natural chamois that they no longer make.

I consumed enough Bud, Coors etc in my younger years to be done with those.  Yes, I am a beer snob.  I don't drink to get drunk.  I enjoy only an occasional brewed beverage so when I do I want it to be quality. I enjoy trying micro-brews. I bought a mixed six of various pumpkin/fall beers yesterday. Hopefully I'll get to have a couple before my son drinks them all.

rrrunner - 2012-09-11 3:36 PM At the risk of sounding like the village (or pod) idiot ... What do you mean by wider chamois? Wider by going further down the leg/across the bum? I guess I've never noticed varying widths.

Some chamois end at or near the crease which exacerbated the problem.

Interesting.  Never really thought about the shape or size of the chamois.  I'll have to look at that. I don't own a pair of De Sotos.

Wow so much info about shorts, saddles and hair removal.

I have a new bike and the saddle that came with it - not too bad again sit bones the numbest.  I think I will buy an Adamo just to try it.    This one seems wide at the back - let me just check the model - Bontrager.  For shorts I have ones with big chamois, some with small but I find the ones in my trisuits best - they are not as big and a lot thinner which you would think would be worse but no.

Yesterday for my 45min trainer ride I wore my shorts with the widest chamois, ouch.  Tonight I'll test the tri suit and let you know.

Waxing for me - haven't looked into the laser hair removal, may do so though.

Beautiful here in Melbourne - running at lunchtime.

SmileSmileSmileSmile

Artemis gained 1lb, I gained 2lb helping her gain that one!  Oh well, everyone says how skinny I look so obviously it's a toned 2lb!

Not a huge cider fan - growing up in England that was the cheap drink we used to swill in the park with the boys while smoking!

Now cider has a resurgance in fashion!  Bulmers I'm told is the best and they make a pear cider which is refreshing on a hot day (a bit laxative if overconsumed...just sayin')

Not to me it doesn't! I know how much it takes to mentally prepare, execute and wind down from those long runs. Not to mention the strain it puts on life, in general.

OMG! I had Leinenkugel for the first time when I was in Reno. They had a huge beer festival going on and of course I took part.

Their shandy was really good, and appropriate, on those hot Reno days.

Unfortunately not many of their beers are readily available. That reminds me though, I need to dig a little.
