bcraht - 2012-09-12 10:19 PM OK all you smarter and better runners than me.  As I have mentioned I have been feeling fatigued/tired.  I recognize that I have upped my run volume, and that my body may just be adjusting.  I also know that I have not been hydrating properly (Not hideously dehydrated or anything, just not quite enough.)  As you can see from my graph, it is not like I am running Salty type mileage, we are talking max 35km a week.  And I am running mostly slow, the occasional faster run.  I have been sore during these runs (not after) but not injury type soreness, just body saying WTF soreness.  So my question is, do I just keep running through whatever this is?  Or do I take a couple days off?

I'm not an expert, but that doesn't look crazy to me. Every third week is a little lighter, and I don't see huge jumps in mileage. From what I remember, you and I are similarly paced (I remember thinking one time that I wished we lived close to each other because I think we would be perfect running buddies). I think you could slow down those easy runs even a little more. They are all under 12, but maybe you need a couple easy runs at 12 or just a little over 12?

I don't remember where you live, but I don't drink water on runs less than 5 miles, if it's not super hot out. So I'm thinking hydration during the run is not the issue, but perhaps you aren't hydrating enough throughout the day?

Swimming helps me recover when I'm feeling physically blah about running, but you've been doing that.

^^^^ What she said.

How long have you been feeling fatigued/tired for again? Have you been getting solid uninterrupted sleep? Sometimes too you increase your volume and you need to increase sleep with it or try to squeeze in a nap.

Good morning, all. I feel a little out of touch with the Pod. I'm sure I've missed some race congratulations.

I decided to treat myself to a weekly CardioABS class at our local fitness center. I had my first class last night, and I LOVED it. It was tough, but doable. (Well, except for sit ups. After 3 c-sections, I don't think those muscles are even connected anymore.) Since I train alone, having people there with me, cheering me on was really inspiring. Ashley (the leader) gave me all kinds of encouragement and even a sweaty hug after class. No one ever hugs me when I'm super sweaty. And boy, were we ever sweaty. An hour of cardio (including three minutes running up and down the bleachers) really got to me. My hair looked like I'd just stepped out of the shower.

This evening, I take my first spin class. I decided that I need to be around people more, especially fit women. I work with men all day long -- I live with men. I'm overloaded on testosterone. lol

I'll take a day off tomorrow and then the awesome trail run is Saturday. It's been raining here for the past 24 hours, so the trail should be nice a muddy. Surprised

Hi everyone! Staying off BT at work this week, so I'm waaay behind on on-goings and my own updates.  Just finished my 5K race report: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/races-edit.asp?raceid=231580

It was a good day, happy with my average pace, and then did the 3 miles after for a 6.1 mile long run Laughing go me!

Great job running! The site is being naughty and logging me out everyone time I try to view your race report. I don't know what that is about.

Yup. Me too. But in any case ...

CONGRATULATIONS BRIE!

Have fun at cycling class! (Get there early if you can to pick your bike and set it up correctly for yourself. And don't do anything you wouldn't do on a road bike. No crazy shyte.)

I'm baaAAAck!!

Hey POD!!!  I missed you!! I just spent time catching up on the 33 pages of this thread #5 - you've all been up to so much!  Great training going on, beautiful photos of alaska, healthy kiddos and family members, Yant's bumpy boobies, Salty's BQ- holy cow guys!!  And guess what, I work in Chippewa Falls, WI - home of Leinies brewing!!  Summer Shandy flows like water around here!!!

Thanks so much for tracking me this weekend at IMWI! It was a super successful day for me and I PRd by 1hr45min!!  whoot whoot!!  I probably could have gotten about 15 min faster...but I'll take my 13:29:08 with a smile!!  K - now that THAT is over (IM training), I'm cutting way down for a few weeks, then starting to training for CC ski season (yay snow!) and I'll be around to join in the MANATEE fun more.  Race report is coming tonight or tomorrow - it's a good one cuz like i said, Sunday was as close to perfect for me as I think an IM can get.  I always thought IM#3 would be my last - but I don't think so ... for SURE I'm doing another ... and another probably after that!! (notice the spacing of those little dots - learned that by reading this thread!!)

you kids RULE!!!

Cracking race Tracy. Really looking forward to the RR.

Yeah, it is the hydration throughout the day that is the problem.  I have been better for the past couple days.  I could slow down some I guess, but as it is I don't feel like I am pushing most days.  Some days I feel like if I slow down I will be walking...

Yanti, re sleep, I have not increased, but have not decreased either.  And there might have been a nap or two snuck in on the weekend.

I don't remember feeling like this when I trained for my marathon--if it's 'normal', which it seems as though it is, I'll just keep plodding along.  I certainly don't feel exhausted all day or anything, just my runs 'seem' harder.

Nuttin' wrong with that. You shouldn't be pushing most days. Keep the easy stuff easy. Keep the minimal hard stuff hard.

Oh, and your runs ARE harder. You keep increasing the volume. That alone does make things more difficult, never mind the other sports, and it's normal for it to take a few weeks, even a month or two for it to assimilate.

Artemis - 2012-09-11 2:14 PM

On the training front: I had originally planned to do a half marathon on November 10.  I decided yesterday that it's probably not a good plan.  I'm not running super consistently or more than 4 miles at a time right now.  I'm concerned that trying to ramp up to the half will cause me to be injured, especially because I'm taking a week or two off at the end of the month so I can finally get my PhD celebration foot tattoo.

So, I'm going to run a 4 miler on 9/22, a 10k on 10/27 (with the family!), and an 8k on 11/10.  After that, I can start working on marathon training and should have a pretty good 6 mile long-run base, which is where I need to start for the marathon plan on 11/15.

Marathon is 3/16/13.  I've been wanting to do this marathon for years!  It's the same day as my very first half ever, so I know the course really well and have always had a good time.

Does that seem reasonable to you guys?  Yanti, I know it's a bit more conservative than I normally am, but you know my injury history.

Now I am not Yanti so take my advice with a grain of salt...

I always think being more conservative, especially with racing, is better. I think your time is better spent working on getting the consistency up (and then mileage) and doing the shorter races. That will set you up MUCH better for a marathon in my opinion.

I was mostly joking that Yanti is more likely to say "RACE!" as that's what she does.

Consistency is easier to build up right now, too.  E is great in the stroller up until about 4 miles, so I can do them with her.  We have some good 2-4 mile runs leaving from the house.  I'm also not mentally ready to start the crazy long runs.  That might sound weird.

"RACE!!!!!"

Okay, now that I said it ... do what Salty says. And what you said.

I don't remember the last time my legs didn't feel a little heavy and fatigued. Oh yeah, probably during my last taper.

Everything you have said indicates you are not injured. If that were the case obviously the answer would be different but I say HTFU buttercup. This is what training is all about. Pushing your body (progressive overload) and then recovering through a series of short, medium and long runs. Mostly easy sometimes hard. It makes that taper really effective.

Be sure you are fueling, hydrating and getting enough sleep and really try to focus on the positive aspects of each run rather than the negatives and build on those.

It was a pleasure to watch, Tracy! Damn. A 1:45 PR? No wonder you want to go back for more. That is extremely impressive!

Also, like you I am glad to know the proper use of the ellipsis, although I have every intention of abusing it as I (and others) have been since the beginning of time.................

*I got to thinking. Ellipsis encompasses the three periods ... but when you use an absurd, rule-breaking amount is it an ellipsi?

I got my forking azz handed to me at practice again last night.

My coach bumped me up 3 groups (the different groups are based on speed) and told me to hang on the best I could.

The intent of the practice was to start too fast (per a typical XC race) slow it down a bit and then finish really fast.

So it was .75 miles at a 5:50 per mile pace

1.5 miles at a 6:30 pace

and .75 miles at a 5:45 pace

I couldn't hang for that last .75 miles and got dropped. Sighhhhhh.

I know that I am being a bit hard on myself but after such a crappy performance over the weekend I am feeling a little down even though I know better.

Salty, I wouldn't have made it through the first 0.75 miles let alone the mile after!  That's impressive.

Those are really quick times!  Next time you'll be stronger and make it through the second 0.75 mile.

Laughing.  Thank you.  As I said, I have never felt this before for this duration, so didn't know if it was 'normal'.  Maybe I have never really pushed myself before.  I have been thinking over the past few runs, that if nothing else, I am building mental toughness.  H'ing TFU now

Meh, you get used to it.  Well, I have anyway.  Happens A LOT when you run as slow as I do Wink.  Nice work Salty, I bet before long you will be dropping people.

Hmmmm, at a track meet a little over two years ago I ran a 6:06 mile so there's no way I could have hung in there on this workout.  Maybe the 6:30's but not that fast sh__ before and after Tongue out

Dayum Salty!  Keep it up, I'm darn proud of our speedy young manatee Smile
