SSMinnow - 2010-09-15 7:17 AM GOOD GRIEF, It's Wednesday already!!!!  This week is flying by so I am guessing at least a few people must be getting excited to toe the line...where are you???  lay out a strategy you plan to follow or a goal you're going to achieve!

For the rest of us, what one decision are you struggling with related to triathlon??? could be which race to do? something to work on in off season? buying a new gadet?? let us help you!!

No racing for me this weekend. Good luck to those who are!

I've also been inspired by the endurance journeys of folks in the MG, and last week I settled on a race for my first HIM! I'm struggling a bit with accepting that I'm going to have to spend a lot more time on the bike now. The bike leg is my favorite part of races, but it's my least favorite part of training, mainly because it's so time-consuming. BUT, I will do it! As soon as I finish my fall running races...

No racing for me.  There are 2 relatively local races this weekend so I am bummed watching some of my peeps go off to race but oh well.

Focus area...the bike.  Have no problem on the flats keeping a pretty good pace but typically get passed like I am standing still on a climb.  I often come out of the swim in the front of the MOP but then get passed by a lot of people on the bike.  Might need to evaluate gearing on the bike and see if that can be improved and certainly need to work on the engine.

From a 2011 race perspective, I have 2 things I need to resolve.  The first is should I do 2 half marathons 3 weeks apart (April 10th and May 1st) or should I make the first one a 10K and then do the half.  What kind of volume do I need to do to be able to do them both 3 weeks apart?  The second is convincing my wife that we have enough time in our lives for me to train for a HIM.  I already know that I want/am ready to do it, just need to get her buy in.  If you guys want to start sending flowers to my house for her with little cards that say HIM for George, that would be great!!!

Good luck Jeff and anyone else who is racing this weekend!

Here's my two cents on the double half marathon.  First, are you trying to PR? Is the second one where you want to PR?  I am going to assume yes to both questions.  If it were me, I would do them both.  The first one I would treat as a pacing test for the second one. Sort of like doing an MP run in marathon training or a McMillan fast finish run.  Treat the first 3m of the first one as a build into your ultimate race pace.  See how it goes, what you might need to adjust. Can you hold that pace for the full 13.1m, etc.  I don't think you need additional volume to do 2 half marathons back to back, but I do think you should be doing long runs over 13.1m, hovering in the 16-18m range if the body and schedule can handle it.

Congrats on the decision to do your first HIM!!!!  I agree that biking can be really time consuming especially if you're doing it outdoors, but depending on when your half takes place you can do  a lot of shorter high intensity rides that won't completel wreck your schedule.  I remember doing a lot of them last winter on the CT and they seemed to fly by.

I think it's funny your favorite part of the tri is the bike, I thought for sure it would be the run!

I understand your issue, but I do some of my best thinking on the bike. It also relaxes me. Always has. I love the moments where I feel one with my bike and the miles fly by. Is there anyway you can incorporate some riding into your daily schedule? Like doing errands, riding to work, etc...? Which HIM are you doing?

Flying in??  Whatcha talking about?  OH right...I live just 3 miles away. *snickers*  I'll just run to start.

We should exchange ph nbrs (through PM, not forums!), to KIT.   If you need a ride or help, lmk. :-)

So here I am, slightly PO'd.    I was cleaning out my bento box with all the cookie crumbs right before my tri last week, and to my horror that underneath it is a slightly large (almost the size of the bottom of the bento box) area of paint crackling. It looked like old worn down paint from an abandoned building.  I tried to rub it off, but it's not "coming off".  I am so disappointed and I'm praying that it didn't affect my frame.   I know I should have had it looked at, but it was just a few hours before my tri.

Today I will get it looked at and praying that it's just paint.

I haven't crashed my bike at all (except that one time when I first learned how to clip in), it's just a year and a month old.

Did anyone have heard of gel spilling on to it and causing corrosion?  I don't remember spilling gel on it (and how could I do that anyways with the bento box right on top of it?!).

This is one sad cyclist!!

No racing for me. My tri season has ended. I have taken 2 weeks off completely. Not doing anything in the way of athletic endeavors except supporting. Just letting my body heal itself. (my back is almost better and I with the inhaler my chest seems to have cleared up) My biggest struggle is my run/bike and swim in that order. I really need to run more than this past year to get better. Actually I really need to train a whole lot more. While I will be coaching with the triathlon club I am going to concentrate more on my own training as well. I am seriously thinking about another HIM next year and and while I would dearly love to do an IM there are some other things to take care of first.

good luck racing peeps!  nada here.

over the past three months i've been having a bad time with comfort on the bike along my inner thighs.   tried different shorts. swapped saddles. had my fitter look me over. nothing.  i can suffer though the last half a him bike but its not going to work past that.

Ha ha, yes, Muncie. <insert David Letterman joke here>. Funny thing is, I think it was Tuesday I decided to do the Muncie Endurathon because I thought it would be a relatively low-key, local-ish race. People around here love the Endurathon. Next day, first thing I find out is that the Endurathon has been taken over as an Ironman-branded race. So much for low-key! But it will still be fun.
