Ken,

Looks like we'll get to meet again!  I'm doing the Olympic as a final tune up though.  Not a stud like you doing the Half.

I found I can stay at a friends house.  So saving some money.  Coming up with another TriGator who is doing the race, but would love to meet up wither everyone at somepoint.

Sigh...Though I am registered for the oly - I haven't hit a lick of training in months now and it appears I am finally out of "tomorrows" for this race. I will still be in attendance - rooting for all of you - and maybe finding my inspiration to start training agian. This will be the first race I have attended in over a year now.

I salute all of you who dig down deep enough to find the desire to be consistent - to NOT let excuses get in the way - and to persevere when times are tough. You are some of my hero's.

I would still like to meet any/all of you. Anyone have an idea on identifying fellow BT'ers?

Anybody know how is the gas situation is down there? We're still having problems here in the ATL and I want to make sure I can get down there and back.

I am here on the island and can tell you we haven't had any problems getting gas. It has fluctuated between 3.78 & 3.95 or so but no shortages. None of the surrounding areas have had any shortage either that I am aware of - in fact the only places I have heard of any shortages seem to be from ATL up I-85 thru Charlotte - including all of WNC & upstate SC.

I think if you can get out of ATL area - you shouldn't have any problem getting back.

That's good because Nashville and Chattanooga are having issues with gas.

I know wetsuits will likely be optional...

Does anyone plan to use theirs?

Water temp may have dropped a few degrees with the cooler nights and days.  But if wetsuits are only optional, I will not be using them.  However, I will be bringing mine because the race director could allow anyone to wear them if the water conditions are bad.

Exactly what does "optional" mean .... I want to wear mine if I can or should I HTFU and race?

AUSQuest - 2008-10-01 2:44 PM Exactly what does "optional" mean .... I want to wear mine if I can or should I HTFU and race?

When the water temp is below 78 it is consider wetsuit legal.  When the temp is between 78-82 (I believe) it is optional, meaning you can wear it but are not eligible for awards or Kona slots if applicable.  Above 82 is illegal.  Now the race director can decide that if the water conditions are less then ideal and the temp is between 78-82 wetsuits can be consider legal and not optional.

It should be wetsuit legal meaning wear a wetsuit if you have one. As long as it's below 78.0, and it's been around 75 degrees at 7 in the morning this past week.

Are you talking air temp or water temp?  I was talking water temp.

According to the link on the ATC website the water temp is running around 76 degrees so it should be wetsuit legal.

We drove the bike and run course for the half today. Both the bike and run courses are pretty neat. The bike basically has two distinct loops. The first is out on A1A, over the bridge toward Yulee. You get off A1A pretty quick into a low density residential area with fresh asphault. Once you hit A1A you turnn around and go back on it. You then go back over the bridge onto Amelia Parkway, this is a beautiful ride. Alot of it is through moss draped trees, very scenic. The road here is mostly smooth with off and on bike lanes. Wheh you get to Amelia Plantation the road gets really good again and its pretty desserted. The next bridge is the one to Big Talbot Island. Its a flat bridge so only issue is wind here. You go out a couple miles then you turn around and head back. Not entirely the same route back as out. Probably last 5 miles on beach road which has no bike lane and some pot holes. Overall its a flat and smooth route with just a few exceptions.

Run is really neat. First 3 or 4 miles is a loop through beach neighborhoods, no shade, kinda like most beach runs. From there you go into the state park and this is pretty much shaded with dappled sunlight. Really pretty and great shade. Watch out for carreon birds, we saw 4 buzzards of some sort devouring a dead animal. I don't recommend laying down on the run. Once out of the park, looks like less than a mile to the finish.

Very neat course.

Kudos to Chris Moling for putting on a fantastic race! I'll have to admit I was expecting some things to go wrong for this inaugural race, but everything went off without a hitch. The volunteer support was nothing short of phenomenal! The swim was a typical ocean swim, the bike course was nice, flat and fast and the run was probably over 80% shaded under tree lined paved roads. Great day and a great race. This should become a must do classic in the future.

I agree, very well done race. Fantastic course, super volunteers, real human beings at every turn telling you where to go, police were in the right places and took care of the racers. I also thought it was really cool how they shut down A1A east for us to race on. Nobody does that.

Great job!

What a great race! Course was near perfect. Volunteers we're very enthusiastic. People telling you where to go. Police were super nice. In fact, beyond the call of duty nice for me and my family. After the race me and my wife and kids had to cross a busy street to get to our car and a police officer stopped traffic to let us by. Super cool. It was my first halfiron and I learned a lot. Especially about about not going out too fast on the bike. These organizers were great.
