Subject: RE: Amelia Island, FL 70.3We drove the bike and run course for the half today. Both the bike and run courses are pretty neat. The bike basically has two distinct loops. The first is out on A1A, over the bridge toward Yulee. You get off A1A pretty quick into a low density residential area with fresh asphault. Once you hit A1A you turnn around and go back on it. You then go back over the bridge onto Amelia Parkway, this is a beautiful ride. Alot of it is through moss draped trees, very scenic. The road here is mostly smooth with off and on bike lanes. Wheh you get to Amelia Plantation the road gets really good again and its pretty desserted. The next bridge is the one to Big Talbot Island. Its a flat bridge so only issue is wind here. You go out a couple miles then you turn around and head back. Not entirely the same route back as out. Probably last 5 miles on beach road which has no bike lane and some pot holes. Overall its a flat and smooth route with just a few exceptions.
Run is really neat. First 3 or 4 miles is a loop through beach neighborhoods, no shade, kinda like most beach runs. From there you go into the state park and this is pretty much shaded with dappled sunlight. Really pretty and great shade. Watch out for carreon birds, we saw 4 buzzards of some sort devouring a dead animal. I don't recommend laying down on the run. Once out of the park, looks like less than a mile to the finish.
Very neat course. |
