KEJ - 2008-10-12 5:14 PM I don't know of any races that do BOTH finisher shirts and race shirts, maybe I'm wrong. Ironman events give you a shirt at the finish, but on event shirt... Correct me if I'm wrong. It's certainly easy to do a finisher shirt instead of a race shirt. Same with the hat. I'm just under the impression it's more for you to cart around after the race....

Lots of solely running races do both shirts. Buffalo Springs 70.3 did the race and finisher....BUT...they are just cotton tees. I will take the awesome Tech Tees from Lonestar or Longhorn AND the hat ANY day.  I prefer the shirt/hat combo...I don't need two shirts from the same race...but hat and shirt is great. Doesn't matter to me if I get it beforehand or afterwards.  I, for one, appreciated the cold finisher towel and the cold water bottle with the Longhorn logos on it.  Guess I'm just a happy camper.

would you all rather have a FINISHER hat and shirt than just getting them at packet pickup???

Definitely.

EDIT: I will say that the shirts we got were very nice, so it's not a knock on the shirts we got at all. But I'd like to get some 'finisher' gear afterwards.

Just my opinion, but I'd like to have one as finisher apparel, and one as just race apparel.  I do not think we need multiples of each.

Given the choice, i'd rather have a finisher hat, and a race shirt.

As soon as the sun comes up, Mike and I are headed out to the park to drive another bike course option for 2009. I'd like smooth roads too. We've also got some ideas for additional parking, right next door....

My wife told me I was supposed to take today off from race stuff, but I'll be back by noon

I'd definitely like to see a race shirt and a finisher's hat. Short sleeve shirts, too. The window for wearing long sleeve shirts in Austin is pretty short.

Bike course I thought was pretty rad. Not like Longhorn is a PR course so bumpy roads is no big deal.

As for asking opinions for post race stuff. More junk food. I do not want to eat healthy after 70.3. An article of clothing (hat or shirt) that says finisher on it given at finishers line (I give all finishers stuff to my mom who digs it up)! For absolute epicness ice tubs would be an all-time great post-race amenitie. Any race that has ice-tubs at the end will have my lifelong support and attendance.
Bleachers in shade on finish line was awesome. Computers with time was awesome. Longhorn was awesome. Beer was awesome.

One quick question (this is not a gripe, just a curiosity).  I thought I read on BT that there would be online athlete tracking at Ironmanlive.com, but I was never able to find it on race day.  Did this fall through, or was I just inept at finding it online?

That's ok... I'm curious, when people rate post-race stuff, what would make post-race great???? We have a band, beer, great food (IMO), team tailgating, massage, misting tents, covered bleachers, a covered seating area, SNOW, photos with a live longhorn, a Results center where you can print out your results.

I haven't sent my survey yet, but I'll give you a preview.  My ONE complaint....

I was really looking forward to a post-race massage.  But by the time I finished (I'm SLOOOOOOOOW), they had pretty much stopped taking anyone.  Same thing with some of the food and such.  The line was ridiculous when I first walked by, so I waited about 30 minutes and by then pickings were getting slim.  If you're going to have all that stuff, KEEP IT AROUND LATE ENOUGH FOR THE SLOW PEOPLE!

I somehow missed the beer.  Where was that and what kind was it?

Otherwise, it WAS a great post-race.  One of the better ones I've seen.  I just think it could probably have been a little more organized or "bigger" to accomodate the number of people.  In other words, same stuff with more access....more food lines, more massage tables, etc. etc.  Maybe some signs to tell people where things were.  And porta potties on that side.  Maybe I missed them, but I had to walk all the way around transition to get to porta potties.  And it wasn't easy to get to them.  It just seemed like chaos around the finish area to me.

Oh, and my only other complaints about the course:

1.  WAY too many turns on the bike...yeesh...
2.  The bike course was FAR too crowded.  It was very hard not to inadvertantly draft and once it thinned out a little and people were OBVIOUSLY drafting there never seemed to be a darn official around.  I only saw ONE bike official the whole day.  But saw lots of blatant drafting.

Do I need to send my survery now?

I guess my only issue with the finisher's gear, is that none of it says "Finisher" on it. Kind of a little thing, and I don't really mean to brag, but I'd like to look at the towel or (leaky) waterbottle someday and see the word "Finisher" on there.

When I finished at 6:20, the beer was gone, as the spectators were also drinking it. It was Michelob Ultra.

If it was Michelob Ultra than I didn't miss anything.

I'm a beer snob.

They were out of ice cream too But, if that's my only complaint I'm in good shape, right???

My one real request is on the shirts - you should have mens and womens cuts and enough of the sizes people order. I wanted XS, I got there early and there were none left - the volunteer said there were only 12 to begin with. That would be fine if they saved those 12 for the 12 of us who actually ordered that size. My XS from last year is huge on me. My small from this year is worse. The sleeves cover my entire hand and more. So, maybe if you had 2 cuts the sleeve would be long enough for the men and the cut would flatter the women more. The Houston Marathon and 10 For Texas both had shirts cut differently for men and for women if you need ideas - they are my 2 favorite tech shirts I've gotten at races. Actually, they are the only 2 I can really wear, and I'm not even very small compared to a lot of tri girls...

All in all this was an awesome (EPIC) event - great job despite the few difficulties
