I checked that it is up to him. He will have to look in the mirror and know he quit. Just like John Collins said "you can quit and they dont care, but you will always know". Look at the great race Rutger Beke had, I'm sure he had his last experience in Kona in his head the entire day. (Congrats Rutger, you deserve it)

...funny how "yes" still leads the vote despite the more vocal "no" minority.

I voted yes.  It's the World Championship and the one race that most of the pro's prepare for all year.  To not finish is quitting on your sponsors, your fans and the triathlon community as a whole. Kona is the ONE race that people outside of triathlon watch.  To not have all the pro's participate (if possible) is wrong.

If they moved IMFL and IMAZ into the next year, we probably wouldn't have this issue. Not having a good day at Kona?  Quit and save yourself for IMFL so you can qualify for Kona next year early in the season.  I hate it.

Actually, "yes" substantially trails those who think otherwise.

Personally, I don't care even a little bit.  It's his race, his sponsors, etc.  I don't need him to uphold my 'ideals' for the sport.  That's my job.

flyinfree - 2008-10-14 12:08 PM Amiine, do you think he should have finished the race? great post as always.
I replied 'I don't care' for the poll. I also said on the watching thread that I will never have the same perspective Macca had at the time he made the choice to quit the race. He was obviously going for the win and anything less than that was probably a failure for him and I can only imagine how dissapointed he was for not been able to defend his title. Losing 10 min in the Men field is basically kissing the 1st place goodbye. (differnce between 1st and 2nd place was less than 4 min). Whether he made the right choice or not I don' know, I don't feel it is up to me to say and I wouldn't judge him based on that. He is one of the most accomplished Triathletes in the sport today and while I was pulling for him on Saturday I can understand why he made that choice.

BTW, Macca had 6 years in which he battled not to win but to finish the race and more than one ocassion he did pushed through and finished by walking. I think back in 2003 he completed the marathon on 4+ hrs.

I am glad I can have an opinion and an open mind at the same time. Thank you for responding. Macca is back on my list of "look up to's" in the overall scheme of things. I saw him at the IM Orlando 70.3 he waas on the panel, and really liked him alot-- I let his handling of HIS difficulties effect my view. All of us can stumble and blow it from time to time. ahhaaha still have my opinion, but with a touch of compassion.

    NOW- let's go 140.6 baby!!!
