Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kgore - 2012-09-13 8:08 PM So it looks like my friend may have had a heart attack. She's only a couple years older than me (38), but has been overweight for many years--though she has lost over fifty pounds this year thanks to Weight Watchers. She also was diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis several years ago. I just can't believe this--well technically, I can, but it just scares me for her. She has had a tough life, yet she has started a phrase among all of our friends---simply: MLR--My Life Rocks--she has a wonderful husband and they recently took in his nephew after the boy's drug-addled mom decided she didn't want him. They recently lost their dog too, yet she finds positivity--in everything! A person like this does not deserve this---and thank goodness that her husband comes home every day at lunch--as he found her not breathing! Sorry, I just felt the need to share this. I am so worried for her and her family...Thanks all for the warm wishes and healing vibes! you're a great friend - keep supporting her and praying - she'll pull through! And it sounds like she's on her way to a healthy lifestyle - this is hopefully just a bump in the road. |

I am so worried for her and her family...Thanks all for the warm wishes and healing vibes! Sometimes these kind of incidents are a warning - change your lifestyle, or there is an underlying problem and thankfully this happening has higlighted it to us and we can fix it. My best friend woke up one morning about a year ago and felt odd - like one sided, couldn't focus and felt just peculiar. She recognised this wasn't right and went to the hospital. She had a stroke - she was 34. Single mother of an 8 year old. Anyway turns out that after many many many tests she had a small hole in her heart. Fixed it and she's good to go! A fit runner, non smoker and not overweight..... Another friend had a bigger stroke a year ago - similar age - extensive tests couldn't find a reason but did find aggressive Stage 4 breast cancer. The stroke saved her life, she would never have found the cancer, never have had the lifesaving surgery and chemo. Training for her next marathon right now. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got 8km in tonight. Enjoyable run; not totally comfortable, but enjoyable. I have been running some new routes in the past few days. I generally run after work because it is too easy to bail if I go home first. There is a ~20km trail route near my work that I have done a couple sections on in the past 2 days. Mostly flat, some MUP, so gravel trails. Lots of wildlife which is cool. Taking advantage of the light and nice weather while we have it!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Feeling a bit more spring like here in Melbourne so hopefully my run will be in semi light tonight. Aiming to get out at 5.30 - 1 hour run with some 20sec sprints every five mins after 20min warm up. Gonna run down by the beach - watch the awesome cyclists go by. Good news - well no news, DH had ultrasound nothing 'suspicious in nature' showed up. so next is an endoscopy - camera crew on standby for Monday Doctor thinks probably gastritis or something similar. Hope it's fixed soon, I'm not the best nurse .....I run out of sympathy after about 5 minutes. |

I do pray for your friend's healing and she really has an outstanding outlook, "MLR". She is a great example that we would all be well served to realize just how blessed our lives are. You are lucky to have such positivity in your life. Edited by cdban66 2012-09-14 6:53 AM |

It's just 20 miles from my house, has been voted the 'best triathlon' in the UK. Oh yes, I nearly forgot to mention, it's full iron distance. On the plus side, it's 295 days away
I'm sorry, Allen, but I'm going to be the pod wet blanket. I'd advise against jumping into a 140.6 next year. Instead, I'd suggest a half marathon and a 70.3 in 2013 and a full marathon and 140.6 in 2014. That will give you two years of consistent training, in addition to the sprint, oly and 10k that you did this year. |

She is right of course, when I think about how I got into the IM I already had two HIM lined up for 2012, already completed two marathons...so whilst it's a massive leap of faith and fitness it's doable. However yours is probably doable just depends how much youu want to do it in 295 days! Sounds a lot but it's not. Believe me the countdown clock for mine goes faster than any other. Every day I have a real panic about it - then I just say come on Jo HTFU and just train. For me I almost want to get it over with rather than prolong the agony of waiting another year. It's like I have to do an IM then I can move on with life! Hehe! Kind of like having a baby! |

I noticed Chrissie used "muppet" to refer to herself -- meaning that she is hopelessly clumsy. I assume "muppet" doesn't mean the same thing in British English as it does in the States -- that being a large Jim Hensen puppet. :-) Please educate me. Where does the term come from as you are using it across the pond? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MUPPET - indeed is of the Kermit the frog variety - we just use it as a comical derogatory term in the UK. Kind of like - you idiot, we would say you muppet. I'm having a bad day - took my bike to the track got attacked by giant swooping magpie and came home after ten minutes. Yes the bike has been outside only briefly. Yes I did unclip and stop twice without incident. Still needs work though. I need to find a carpark to practice where no boy racers are hooning around! Upshot of it all is - I am not a natural rider. I don't think I'll ever be confident to ride in aero so taking those bars off - managed HIM in normal positiion - and in the TdF they go all day with no aero bars! I have to face it so decision right now is - bulk of hours and T.I.T.S will be on the drainer working hard. Then at the weekend I will get out on the quiet roads for an hour or so Saturday and Sunday - just to keep the balance and road handling together, practicing drinking and eating etc. to avoid having to take hands off handlebars too much am investing in a camelpak - with that and two bottles I think I will make it through the IM bike section unless it's a scorching hot day - unlikely in March. I had lots of tears of frustration that a stupid 6 inch winged creature could cause me so much distress but it did so there you go.
