All this talk about swimming has me inspired. I registered for a 7 week tri-swim training program. The first practice is Jan 19th... next monday! Think I can lose 10 pounds by then? Okay - I need some input, should I wear a swim cap, goggles, wetsuit? What do ya'all wear when you swim? I'm sure the coach will let us know, but I want to get some ideas from ya'all. BTW, I had to adopt the "ya'all" when I moved to Atlanta 3 years ago. When I lived in Boston, it was "yoos guyz". lol ~Jennifer |

I grew up in Texas...haha as for swimming...go get a nice neopryne swim cap...(vinyl will work too) and get 2 good pairs of goggles...try them on...put them up to your eyes and push them so to see if a suction forms....if they stay up with out the back strap around your head and you can shake your head around..then this is a good fit. I like to have an extra pair, because you never know when a strap can break. Make sure to have a suit that has an "X" shape in the back so that your straps are not falling off of your shoulders....a nice thick towel and go swim swim swimmy! good job on signing up Jennifer....I need to sign up with my tri group....you may just have inspired me to do so...let me know how it is! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sledge - 2009-01-12 6:37 PM ME TOO, ME TOO -- I SWAM TODAY!!! I didn't do anything close to what you did, but it was the first time I was in the pool since my last triathlon (and that was in OCTOBER!). I'm so happy, I could scream (well, I guess I am screaming It's been a real problem for me, getting the courage up to actually do it. I broke my collarbone a couple of years ago, had a non-union for almost year, then they put in a plate. Well, the plate caused lots of pain and friction so that I couldn't swim anything but breaststroke. Then last May they finally took out the plate, but I was just afraid that swimming wouldn't "measure up" to what I could do in biking and running, so I just set it to the side and gutted my way through the swim parts in the couple of triathlons I did last season. But realistically, that's not going to work for a half ironman. So today I went to the pool. No magic, but I'll definitely go back again. Well done, Cheri! It's amazing what pain will keep you from doing and pain-free allows you to do! Take it slow - your shoulders will need to ease into it. I've let my masters coach bully me into doing the Postal 1-Hour for the team, so I'll be doing my lap swim sometime this month - not sure exactly when, yet. Then, I get back to real workouts Feb 2 (Groundhog Day!). Trish |

In a typical indoor pool you'll overheat quickly in a wetsuit (I've done it to try out a wetsuit before racing in it, but I think I only lasted 200m before getting too hot) |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I was out his morning under a beautiful, bright moon running along, about 2.25 miles into my run when I caught my left toe on something. I stumbled but I didn't fall. Around a 1/2 mile from the end I started feeling some tightness in the left knee. I've done some ice and ibuprofen since then and it feels OK while walking, so I think I dodged a bullet. I'm sitting here eating lunch with another ice bag on it for good measure. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() was gone all day yesterday, but finally just got caught up with you! i didn't know i could buy a gym membership at costco either! i'm so doing that! the gym near me (well, it's only about 45 minutes away) doesn't have a pool, which is my main reason for not joining right now--if i were a brilliant PR type of chick, i'd have my community open up a swim center. i saw one in another town and was so jealous! they had 4 olympic sized pools!! i'd join THERE if it wasn;t an hour and 10 minutes away!! i didn't end up biking yesterday, although, i did get out for a run. about the time i was going to get on the stationary bike at my parents house, my dh called me from work, i had to pick him up and take him to the hospital. he had a bit of a "training excercise" and broke his big toe. i feel for him, but it's kind of hard not to laugh, since he was making fun of someone who had a VERY similar accident last year. anyway, because he had to leave early today i don't get out for any training today, which is probably ok, i'm about due for a day off. although i tend to get a little hysterical when i have to take days off. LOL |

I want you to post the picture of your bike in the snow with the wonderful view of the lake near your house...you know the one you posted last year and I fell in love with your home! let everyone see the remote area you live in! and why you run with a gun or with your dh following you in the car! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I had a great spin session with the tri club last night. I love that the spin bikes have watts on them in addition to level and cadence so we can really get a good idea of the power that we are exerting. We did some great power/strength and speed drills. I did ask the coach about my issue with lunges and how they destroy my legs everytime...his response? "Do more!" Swim session tonight for me! What does everyone else have on the go?

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When chatting with my sister last night, I totally realized that I had to share her website with my BT pals. It is www.gracefuledge.com and is a site geared towards active women like you! She is doing some revamping but there is still some pretty cool stuff on there and special for Nicole, being not too far from DC, there is a DC specific edition with local events. Have a peek in between your training! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Swim form question ! I had been fighting the rocking motion that happens when I swim, I thought I was messing up, so wanted to stop that. HOWEVER I decided the other day to swim however I do without fighting it, so I just let myself kinda rock. I was not OVER doing it, but I noticed that it was so easy to do the EVF and to breathe. So, my question is, is the gentle rock good form, or is it just easy for me and my form ? lol |

When I started swimming I asked everyone around me that swam in the lanes around me for help...and many times I would sit and watch other swimmers before I got in...and sometimes under water as they would swim on either side of me...plus there is youtube and the home page on BT offers some swim tips to beginners...do you want me to send you a link? This is probably a question for one of you swimmers on the team not me!!!...I am at a loss and do not want to give the wrong information. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm talking about the three strokes in between my breathing. So I take a breath, then when my face is in the water until the next breath I can tell I rock a bit. Mostly on the two strokes between the breaths....... I am not joining a masters class, there is nothing like that around me. In any event, I appreciate you trying to tell me if I am right or wrong......... and even if it is wrong it feels so right !!!! LOL LOL |

LOL LOL I'm also not sure what you mean by "rocking". Is this rocking side-to-side or front-to-back? If it's side-to-side, then you are talking about "rolling". You definitely want to be rolling towards your side to breathe. Between breathes your face should be looking down at the bottom of the pool but it's fine for your body to roll from side-to-side. These days they talk about not swimming "flat" which is what you get if you don't roll at all. |
