This just in from TAN. Thanks so much, everybody! (P.S. Like heck we are going to pull the threads down. John's adoring public has a right to know).

This will probably be the last update of the day.  John was up for about 15 or 20 minutes.  We told him what was going on and the docs came in and used lots of terms that he seemed to understand, but neither his sister or I did.  They told him that he needs to get up and walk around as much as he can muster, as it will help the surgery heal.  He told the doc he would walk after he had a nap.  Of course, he wanted to go home today and the doc told him no.  He is fully convinced that he can take care of himself at home.  That translates into "my wife can take care of me at home", but who's counting.  The doc told him that he had a couple of days of IV antibiotics to go before they even considered that.  He began to pout.

After the doc left he gave me a list of a bunch of people that he wants to see for a meeting tomorrow to discuss an off-road tri next year that he wants to have TFT put on.  I told him no meetings and hid his phone.  He asked me to get him a Runner's World magazine so he could start to plan his off-season training.  All I can do is shake my head. I have to go home to Des Moines tonight and get his Georgia jersey so he has it for the Alabama game and some nice clothes for the meeting he is not going to have.

I told him about the wonderful things that everyone had been saying and he told me to have Marma, whoever that is - take down any threads about him because he is no more special than anyone else.  He also told me to tell two goggs that he is a d bag.  I am not sure why he is mad at him, because I thought he was the guy that let us stay in his condo in Chicago and I thought he said he was planning to go watch him run a marathon this weekend.  Maybe you all know what he is talking about.

Anyway, I am going to leave him in the hands of the nurses here and go back to Des Moines to get some things for him.  I will update you all tomorrow as to anything further.

Despite what he says I am going to keep him in my prayers and hope that we keep this page up so we can easily find updates on his condition.

John, bad news for ya, bro....no threads are coming down.

Just got to this party....horrified to see the circumstance, Outstanding news on the progress. Thoughts and prayers continue for a speedy recovery...and to boot, I've not seen any more selfless, giving behavior from someone at risk. You're special, check with the legions of t-shirted kids waiting for you if you need evidence.

Hat's off.  Now, go get better and step away from the cell phone.

Dang. Even though his heart stopped for 4 minutes, his mind did not miss a beat. John, you are one tough SOB. Now quit bothering us about the threads and let us enjoy sharing your good news! Prayers still going out to your entire family. Especially your wife. Something tells me that she is going to have her hands full once you get home

No kidding.  I have a feeling she's going to have to hold him back from training and everything else so he can rest and heal.

Wow, way down, but looking up. Adding my thoughts and prayers to all the rest. And good luck to the "army" for putting all their energy to a good use in a good place! I love the running and riding vigil, very cool!

And Suzanne, it doesn't matter if you don't know who we are. We take care of our own, and JD is definitely one of us. Just feel all of our positive vibes blending in with all the rest.

I posted this in another thread last night. When the opportunity arises, would someone please get the message below to John?

crowny2 - 2008-09-24 3:33 PM

....he told me to have Marma, whoever that is - take down any threads about him because he is no more special than anyone else.

Nor are you any LESS special. Or, to put it another way:

People here have come to like and respect you. Even care for you quite a bit. HTFU and deal with it.

Request denied.

Oh, and get better.

This is a dictated message

Good morning all.  Thanks for all of your support through this event.  As Mr. Twain once said, the rumours of my death are slightly premature.  I have some notes.

First of all, Stephanie is not amazing or wonderful or any of the other things that you all have called her.  She is actually a PITA that drove me to this situation with all of her demands about the new house.  (You see, it's funny because I am making her type it AND she doesn't know how to use the sarc font, get it?).  Truthfully, she is the person that inspired me to fight the first time around and she is the person that continues to help me fight and does all of the stuff that I can't do with the charity.  She is a gift from God.

Aquagirl - stop the tear thing - not a big fan of the tear thing - nobody iss dying over here, no worries.

RedCorvette - Dude, the corvette is yellow.  That has been bugging me a while now.

KSH - Than you for stating that I am using my donated organs to their fullest extent, but I have to disagree.  They will not be used to their fullest until we wipe out the waiting lists for hearts and lungs and limit the time for livers to a point where there are not 18 lives lost each day awaiting a transplant.  Then the full extent of Vanes'a organs will be realized.

rkrueser - You see, man.  You mods are afraid to runa free state.  You are fascists, I tell you.  I need to get run4yrlif in on this, he will protect my rights at the expense of all others. Tongue out  I bet I have my cell phone back by tomorrow morning at least.  I know how to bribe a nurse or two (not like that, perverts).

barqhead - Quite the contrary, I am actually very easy to live with and cause nearly no inconvenience at all to those around me.  We will have to pause while my wife laughs uncontrollably.

gvey - Thanks for the reminder, but I have my Knowshon blackout jersey from last year that I will be wearing.  Since my Dad went to 'Bama, this is a big game for us.

pitt83 - Dude, you are my hero.  It is the attitude that you bring to this conbversation that will win this battle.  Margaret Mead once said "A small group of thoughtful people can change the world.  Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."  That is a very powerful statement.  Whether that small group is just me, just me and you, just me and the 54 people in the TFT Army, or the 1,000 plus BT members, it's gonna happpen, andd I am not going anywhere until it does.  I owe that to my donor and to her family and to all of the other people that through a simple act of saying yes to something that did not need any longer, became the largest hero in a persons life.  It is a huge gift without cost, which I am certain seats you at the feet of your god, no matter which religion you prescribe to.

Since this is posted in Tri Talk, I have a question for you.  I have a 5k scheduled for 10/12.  I have missed almost a week of training days and I am not sure how to proceeed once I get home.  Should I just jump back into the training schedule where it picks back up, or should I go back to where I left off and start there?  I would like to set a new PR at this race.  Thanks for any advice you can give.

Thank you all for your support and go back to your business.  Nothing to see here.  Move on.  Nothing to see.

Dude - I think the protocol after septicemia requiring surgery, ICU visit and IV antibiotics is uhm NOT training nor racing.

sheesh all I have is meningitis and asthma and I have decided my season needs to be over.

your body is talking.  no it is SCREAMING.  back off, heal up and cheer others from the sideline.

ok?

glad to hear you are back to the JD we all know and love.
