losta - 2009-08-25 5:20 PM Hi everybody! How's everyone's August closing out? Is anyone signing up for any challenges next month?

I will close out August in pretty good form.  Not sure about a September Challenge.  Depends on what someone dreams up.  I pretty much do now what I am able to do.  A Challenge wouldn't make me able to do more or give me more time to get in more training.  How about you?

I swam for about half hour today.  I timed an 800 at about 20.30.  (That is if I counted correctly!  I am such a day dreamer in the pool!)  I am feeling back in the groove today.  Feels good.

I think my August was pretty successful.  I feel my bike and swim are much stronger and my run is on track.  My weight is still my struggle but I feel like I am firming up.  I need to get a handle on that.  If only I could get about 20 off me.  I carry it all around my middle.  UGH!

My personal challenge for myself is to get 3 swims, 2 bikes and 2 runs in a week.  If I can do that i will be so proud of myself.  I also want to have a rest day so I need to toughen up and do 2 a day like Leah just did.

As for my Triathlon buddies, I'm pretty stoked.  I work at a university so the two who just signed up are students I work with.  The other buddy is my bro-in-law.  I have another friend thinking about signing up.  He is going to wait until after my September triathlon.  Hooray!  It is fun to have people to talk about gear and training!  (Besides my Nutsos!

Hi Ladies -

I might not be around much for the next 2 weeks. My mother is coming into town tomorrow night... she'll be here a week and a half. Not sure what to do with her that entire time! Eek.

Anyway it's nice that she's coming to watch the Tri as the only family I had last year was my husband. Although it looks like we're looking at a cool rainy day which kinda sucks for the spectators. (I'm not complaining though! Heat + an extra 50+lbs of weight = uncomfortable)

K - Enjoy your vacation. I've always wanted to goto BM!

I finally gave in today and got a prescription for hormone replacement therapy.  Now I will be able to sleep which should help enormously with my lack of energy.  I have been battling night sweats and insomnia pretty much nonstop for about a year and I just came to the end of my rope.  My doctor says it will take 2 or 3 days to take effect, but that after that, I will be a new woman.  I can hardly wait.

Now, I have a whole lot of lost time to make up for.  Two races in a little over a month!

And I do want to say that I swore that I would never, that would be NEVER, take HRT.  Well, never say never, because you never know when you will have to eat those words.  I got to the point where I was begging for anything, including what Michael Jackson was taking, up to just before the point of it killing him.

Take time to log your race IdealMuse!!  We will be rooting for you!  Enjoy your momma.

Leah - Congrats on getting some meds to help you sleep.  I know sleep helps everything.  I had a mother-in-law who couldn't sleep for years.  Once she got sleep she was a different person.  Hang in there!

I have to report I did nothing but go to happy hour tonight.  I am a total slug.  The wine was great and the company was even better though.  I will do my best to make it up the rest of the week.  So much for taking it to the next level today.

We are having wildfires near me so there is no working out outside, which shut down swimming this morning.  I am not sure what I will do tonight to get my peach.  I will do something, though.  We are going to Utah tomorrow for a long weekend for the Shakespeare Festival and usually get in some hiking and such when we are there.

I am on a mini vacation to Utah this weekend.  I did get in my hour of Crossfit before leaving.  I will either (or both) get in some running or we will do some hiking this weekend.  I really want to drop that last pesky ten pounds (after losing thirty), so I would like to get both in.  But it is a vacation, after all.  We will see.

Have a good weekend everyone.

I did get in a hike this morning at Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah.  You know, this place looks just like the pictures of Utah!  Hope everyone is able to get in some training wherever you are.

I'm here Leah.  You are missing us aren't you!!  I'm catching up from a wild week.  Had a nice long ride today.  38 miles of Crazy hills.  I made it but I was BEAT!  I'm feeling ok with my week but wish I would have powered through and not had 2 rest days.  My week was 2 runs, 1 bike, and 2 swims.

My biggest struggle continues to be my weight.  I am down 10 since I started this journey but am lingering around 195-196.  I need to play with diet.  I'm thinking about cutting my carbs and increasing my protiens.  I think September is going to my weight month.  I've got to figure this out.

Great job leah working out while on vacation. Isn't Utah beautiful!?  You want to get your 10 pounds off, we should team up on weigh ins.  Have you still been going to WWs?  I'm going to try to log food.

I can't wait to hear about IdealMuse"s race.  I'm hopping her success will get me fired up.

Losta - I'm not signing up for a  challenge but my personal challenge is my weight.  My goal is to break 190 this month.  Great calendar this month!  You are a little Leah Jr!  Keep up the good work.

I'm 28 days out from my next race.   Tomorrow I plan on some pool time.

Have you checked out Team Skinny?  It is very motivational and everyone there is struggling with weight.  They have been of enormous help to me.

I personally am experimenting with The Zone and might go towards a Paleo-type of diet.  I've lost most of the weight I wanted to lose, so now it is mostly about the last ten and finding a nutritional plan that I can live with the rest of my life.  I do not, let me repeat that, DO NOT want to regain the weight - again - and have to lose it - again.  I want to keep it off and am looking for a program for life.  I also want to help my SO lose the fifty pounds that he wants to lose.  He is doing The Zone and Paleo with me.

I started this with the No Sugar Challenge last December and found that I could live without sugar.  From there, it has been the slow elimination of processed foods.  Truly, I found that I didn't miss this stuff once I had been without them for a couple weeks.  You might also consider the current No Sugar Challenge.  It isn't easy, but it is doable.

Hi everybody! Just completed my August Challenge with 100-110% in all my categories. Many on my team did not but to me it's about challenging myself so I don't really care as long as I knew I tried my best.

I signed up at sparklepeople.com last week it's got a good food logging system. I never logged my food before. There are also many groups there. Not as good as BT but many, many types of groups. Also lots of health and diet info too.

I have two sprint tri's coming in September. I am looking for a new training plan, coaching system or something to keep me motivated as the days shorten and the weather gets worse.

Any ideas?

Hello Nutsos!

Today I couldn't squeeze pool time in during work so i thought i would run when i got home.  The desert storm ruined that idea so i worked on strength and core today.  It actually felt pretty good.  I might try to keep adding some of that in every now and then.  Easy to do sit ups and push ups while vegging out.

Leah - Thanks for the tips.  I don't want to put my weight back on either.  I have two small children and i want to be able to keep up with them.  I will try Team skinny again this month.  Tried it once before but vacation messed me up.  I still haven't figured out my game plan for diet.  I need to research the zone and the other one you mentioned.  Anything that doesn't make me give up my wine.  Weight watchers is good for wine!

Losta - So proud of you for your challenges!  Doesn't it feel great to find a motivator that works?  That is how tris are for me.  So far having the dates on the calendar keep me moving.  I should probably log my food too.  At least it makes me think before I have a glass of wine at night.  I was using fitday but I'll check out the sparkle.  I've heard good things about dailyplate too on the Lance Armstrong site.  As for work outs, I've been attempting to do the 2 run, 2 ride, 3 swim plan.  In Arizona, we are entering tri season and can work out and race year round.  IdealMuse might have some thoughts since she lives in Chicago.  BTW- How much weight do you want to lose?

IdealMuse - I am dying for your update!!

Kirih - Any updates?  Are you back yet?

As I was typing this entry I started thinking of a fun weight loss challenge idea.  What if our little 'Nutso' group had our own September Weightloss Challenge?  We could weigh in tomorrow or Wednesday and do a percentage weight loss each week like 'the Biggest Loser' show.  Percentage weight loss will help the little ones in our group.  (not me!)  The person with the highest percentage weight loss at the end of the month would win!

If we want to make it more interesting, the winner could receive a small gift from each of the others that can be sent via mail.  It doesn't have to be costly.  Maybe something worth $5.00 to $10.00 dollars?  With so many of us being from different parts of the country, it might be fun to see what we get.  If we don't want to spend money (or give out addresses), the losers might have to go on an extra run or something.  (maybe even suffer through one of Leah's cross fit trainings!)  I am just thinking of things to motivate me.  I'm open to other ideas as well.  Let me know what you thinkl

Have a great Tuesday!

I started my tri training April 12th 2009. Since then I have lost about 30 lbs. (I did weigh myself until several weeks after I started).
I want to lose a total of 100 by June 2010. So 70 to go. Then perhaps I'll be ready for a HIM.
I'm up for a challenge though I seem to weigh the same for a while then I lose 5 or so lbs in a week.

I too am anxiously awaiting the Chicago tri report.

I have a correction for a post I did several above this, the correct site is sparkpeople.com

Also I did my September 1 weigh in and I lost another 5 lbs. from about 2 weeks ago. I'm ready for a weight loss challenge.

The sparkpeople site has got me drinking/tracking more water (8-10 glasses a day) and gives me info on my foods in terms of fat, carb and protein content.

Happy September everybody!

Still smoky here so I went again to the gym and the treadmill.  So, I did get my peach for the day.

Sure, let's have a nutso September challenge.  Weigh-ins on Wednesday are good as that is the Team Skinny weigh-in day plus it is my (usually) Weight Watchers weigh-in day.

While I was at the gym I thought that I would get my body fat percentage calculated by calipers just to see how different the number is from my scale here at home.  Bad news.  It is the same - 33%.  The very young trainer advises me to "Eat less and run more."  Blunt, but true.  I know that I have been concentrating too much on Crossfit and strength training and not enough on running and fat burning.

So, I guess my new mantra is - Eat less and run more.

Eat less run more sounds good.
I think I'm up for team skinny too. (though no one would believe I was on a team skinny)

A new Ironman Syracuse 70.3 was just announced for September 2010 in Upstate NY about a 4 hour drive from my home.
I was looking at registration it said there is a strict 8 hour time limit. Is that normal for most HIMs or just WTC and other high profile events? I would hope I could do it in that time by then but if I was having an off day and had to walk half the run I don't know. Any advice?

I don't remember exactly how long my HIM took me, but my recollection is that it was something like 9 hours.  That was more than the official allowed time (which ws probably 8 hours), but they let me finish.  I really wanted to finish because I had (foolishly??  optimistically??) entered myself in the lottery for Kona and you have to have at least finished an HIM within a certain amount of time before they will let you do Kona.  So, I really wanted and needed to finish that HIM just in case I got a Kona lottery slot.  By the time that I finished my HIM, and barely survived, I knew that there was no way I could do Kona and I hoped like heck that I didn't get in.  I didn't, so that was OK.

I don't know what to tell you about a strict 8 hour limit.  I know how long it would take me to mostly walk a half marathon, about three hours.  The swim is the better part of an hour.  The wild card is always the bike and how hilly the course is and all of that.  Could I do the bike in about 4 hours?  The eternal question.

Today's update:  I was lazy, then read Leah's entry and went for a run.  'Run more and eat less' is pretty powerful!  Hard to mess with that logic.  Tomorrow I HAVE to get into that POOL!

I'm fired up for a weight loss challenge.  I'm going to get into Team Skinny after this.  I'm happy to do our seperate Nutso Challenge tracking.  I kinda like determining percentage body weight.  Nerdy I know.  I hope IdealMuse and Kiri join us to make it interesting.

HIM cut offs scare me.  My precictions are the same as Leah's.  I think I will be an hour on the swim and 3 hours on the run.  I know that bike ride is going to be brutal so who knows.  I will consider the race a success if I meet the cut offs and finish without injury.

Losta - I think you can do it.  If you shoot for September you will have a year to train, a year to lose more weight, and a year to work on your times.  I think you can do it!!  That would be a great way to end next season.

Leah - I can't believe you tried to lottery into Kona before your first HIM!  You are so cool!  No fear!

Let's make September a great month.  My weight today is 195.8.  My goal is to break 190 this month.  (And to lose more weight then you two!!  hee hee hee!

As I posted on team skinny: Ok I weighed in yesterday. I know how much I weigh but I would rather not put that number on an open forum as it could bounce around the internet for years so I will just say my goal is to lose 8 lbs. in September. Sounds reasonable.
Also my B-Fit boot camp class starts in 2 weeks and I am going to be adding strength workouts to my plan. And I too am trying to run more. Still short runs but more of them.

I gained at WW today, but I am not convinced that it was an actual one pound gain.  I just don't see how I could have consumed an extra 3,500 calories more than I expended.  More running and less eating.

I did Crossfit this morning, but I am still going to get in a short run this evening.  Hopefully it won't be too smoky as I am planning on doing this outside.

Don't shoot yourself over it.

That's why I'm not a big fan of the scale especially short term. I weighed myself 2 weeks ago, then last week and this week.
The scale had me up 3 lbs last week then down 8 this week. I couldn't have lost 8 pounds in a week. Most likely body fluids and water retention last week.

I swam today.  It felt good.  I had a friend with me who gave me some swim tips.  Hopefully they will pay off.  I swam a 750 in 18.47.  I was ok with that but I'd really like to try to get that time down.  I want to get another swim in tomorrow.

BESIDES - Running more and Eating less - I decided as part of my weight loss strategy, I'm going to log my food.  I looked over a couple different sites and decided on the daily plate.  It seems to have a lot of of foods available for logging, more so then fitday.  We'll see how it goes.  I'm also going to try to eat more fruits and veggies, eat less white stuff, and drink more water.

Losta - Message me your starting weight so I can calculate your percentage weightloss for the month.  I have Leah's from the Team Skinny thread.  I know you don't like the scale but one weigh in everyone Wednesday MIGHT really motivate you.  Sounds like you are totally on the ball with your boot camp class and your running.  Great job.  You are going to be ready for that HIM!!

Leah - You are like the little cutie of the group.  With no photo I'm picturing a tiny little strong gal.  Low weight and getting strong from cross fit!  I think I weight as much as you when I was in the 4th grade!  I am 5'11 though so I shouldn't compare.  Great job on the cross fit.  Seems like you really enjoy it.  Hope you didn't get too much smoke.

Check in with you all tomorrow!
