Joe - I agree! this is one of the hardest bricks ever - always amazes me how much the arms take a beating while running.

2hr trainer spin; 2hr easy run, 45min trainer spin to flush the legs.

Managed to hold the 2hr run at 10:20m/m, which surprised me as this is the longest run in several weeks. maybe there is some merit in this quality over quantity debate ...

Jackie – you rock! Those first 13 mile splits are what I dream of for my 13.1 let alone 26.2!

Your dedication and commitment to endurance sports and this group over the past three years is unparalleled and I am proud to say I know you, Grandma!!

Mark.

I had a moment of enlightenment today. Was heading to the pool and thinking of our monthly challenges. We all know that the challenge is designed to encourage consistency. If you have a consistent month of workouts you have won regardless of the standings. Of course, there is always a podium and its neat to be at the top of the chart at month end.

The first week of the challenge is a lot like the swim in a triathlon. The swim is the first event and I'm sure most have heard the adage that you won't win the race in the swim but you can certainly lose it. The same is true in our challenge. If you don't start the month in a consistent fashion you are left trying to play catch up the rest of the month to try to reach the podium.

Two takeaways, get to the pool (and swim on a consistent basis) so that you don't lose the race in the first half hour and make sure that you strive for consistency across all disciplines week in and week out.

Mitch, great analogy. Consistency has certainly helped me become a better athlete. I remember when I wouldn't even consider working out two times a day and always had to have two or three rest days every week. Thank goodness, those days are gone.

MarkH, thanks for the kind words. I love learning from and teaching others. It comes naturally to me. Glad to know it's appreciated. And this grandma thing is really pretty neat.

Joe, not being able to catch my breath really freaked me out a little. Not knowing that the body would divert the resources to the high heart rate, I ended up not having enough electrolytes in my system. Once the cramping got really bad, I just gave in. In retrospect, perhaps I should have kept running. It hurt either way.

I was curious how everyone is trending from a training perspective so I created a spreadsheet totaling monthly results in the challenge (see below).

Some observations:

(1) We've lost almost half of the participants. If you are lurking or just keeping up with the thread you don't need to participate in the challenge to be part of the group. Letus know how you're doing. Let us know your successes or challenges. All of us here like to support one another! @Beth, @Ellen, @ Melissa and @Seth, we'd love to hear form you!

(2) Lot's of positives throughout our group:

@Brian - great progress this month;

Same for you @DaveC;

@Dennis & @MarkH are going to print a great month;

@Dan and @DaveL continue to be consistent;

@Jim & @Joe should have a good ones too;

@Gabe & @Jackie I don't worry about you;

@MarkZ you just keep cruising along every month;

@Patrick and @Rachel keep on working the best you can!

Sorry I went back to lurking and keeping up with the thread. I did buy my first pair of tri shoes to replace my old and busted mountain bike shoes. 4 weeks 4 days until my 2nd ever tri. I'm keeping it as consistent as the weather will allow. Hoping that winter doesn't come back!

Thanks,
Beth

Great to hear that you're keeping at it. The weather is always tough to deal with. What distant Tri and what are your main goals for the race?

I've been living this struggle for the last few months Mitch and I wish you luck in your search. I ended up buying several books, researched the plans on BT, Endurance Nation, and Training Peaks. I just couldn't make up my mind as to which one I should choose, there are more then 15 pages of HIM training plans on TP alone!!. I'm fairly new to this sport and I didn't want to choose the wrong training program for lack of experience. As you already know its a huge commitment and challenge and I want to make sure I am prepared for what may come. At the end of the day I opted to use a local Tri coaching group. For me this will take all of the guess work out of whether I'm doing too much, not enough, having the right nutrition planed, or wondering what will be my hydration requirements? For a one time fee not much more then TPs plans I get a coaching staff that is going to help me figure all of that out. It is a group training plan with one on one email and text support. They will monitor all of my activities through my Garmin Connect and will make adjustments from there. I know this doesn't answer your question but its a good option that you may have not considered.

Don't know yet. Maybe Steelhead (Aug 9th). Maybe another race. Maybe Tawas again? Steelhead would probably be the earliest.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
