JHagerman - 2009-12-30 1:09 PM Yeah, healing is going well.  I specifically did not look at what 'exactly' was going to happen, good thing I didn't.  When I got in the dr office the nurse drops a pamphlet and says "look through this and ask the dr if you have any questions."

I saw 1 pic and realized that I was totally unprepared for where the cuts were going to be - yikes.  So while no, it wasn't painful... it was very uncomfortable.  Today is day 2 of recovery.

I was going to make a smart @$$ comment but every way I tried to write it, just didn't sound good.

Me too.

The most difficult part of mine was seeing the REALLY HAWT nurse the doc sent in to get me draped and prepped.  That was just soooo wrong.

A lot of catching up to do.
Sounds like everyone's had a nice holiday.

I've been hitting the bike quite a bit since my achilles is acting up again.  Got a bike fit yesterday.  Haven't ridden yet (due to some stitches in my back from a mole removal), but what little I spun in the store the bike was 1000% more comfortable.  Also got some aero bars put on.

To explain my absence...Robin's digestive issues, which date back to about 1999 have resurfaced with force.  After a lot of tests and surgeries over the years she's still fighting this crap.  Now the focus has turned to her pancreas.  She had a CT scan this morning.  That required her to take in some iodine, which she isn't really allergic to, but does react to it.

On a positive note, Christmas was awesome.  My parents, my family, and all my siblings families pooled all the money we would normally spend and gave it all to Provisions (the local food bank).  My kids are the only young ones in the family so they got some toys, but otherwise no gifts.  It was one of the better christmases I can remember.

Kim, re: your computrainer...Windows 7 Professional has an XP mode so you can run software in XP rather than in 7.  Maybe that would work.

Jeremy, you have to get a cake.  Was my cake picture in the old forum or this one?

OUCH!!

I just went for a ride and it was terrible.  I went for 40 mins and averaged a whopping 11 mph!!!  Granted, there was traffic, traffic signals, and hills, but dang, I sucked.  It was my first ride outside in a VERY VERY long time, and it was 40 degrees but I felt like I should have been faster, and less tired for such a short ride.

I will be confined to my trainer most of the next month or two, is this what I should expect when I start hitting the road in the spring?  I better start making my boring training rides more challenging to prepare for the hills of east TN.

From now on when I ride outside I am either going to ride on our greenway, which means slow easy riding because of runners/walkers, or drive to the local riding route which is about 20 mins from my house.  The local spot is a nice 18mi round trip that can be extended be crossing one highway and riding Foothills pkwy, up into the mountains....which I need to learn to ride.

Its a good thing I have 5.5 months till my Oly races...

Pity party over..thanks for listening

I've been dropping hints about us thinking about more permanent forms of birth control, but my husband seems hesitant. I suspect it has more to do with not wanting to be snipped than it does with wanting another kid! But I'm happy to wait a couple more years to see if he puts his money where his mouth is (so to speak ). I would like to be the second to give big props to all the men who stepped up to the plate and got snipped for the team! It kinda makes up for being the ones who had the hassle and expense of being on the pill for years and years before marriage.

I got out for a run today and would really love to set up my bike and rollers tonight but the house remains a giant disaster zone and that might take priority over further workouts at this point. I am still anxious to get some video up for everyone here to laugh at critique and help with my bike fit.

And all the swim posts are really amping up my drive to get back in the water!! Really great thoughts about speed and drill work. Thanks all for the inspiration.

But what young woman wants to come in and watch that??

Anyway - men, it's a good thing to give to your wife so she doesn't have to go in for a more difficult procedure.  So for those who've had this done, how long before you were riding your bike or running again?  I didn't get a specific answer from my doc - just a 20 lb lifting restriction for 7 days... but an absolute restriction for 72 hours.  I'm not so sure that I'll be up for a jog anytime soon.

Here are my thoughts for the new year:

Stepping up my tri training, I'll be getting a tri coach and I'm going to start logging my mileage as well as my time (only did time this year).

I am going to try to eat cleaner and log my food intake.

Get to 100 lbs lost (I think I'm halfway there now, new ironman body composition scale on the way) by April 12 which is the 1 year anniversary of me getting off the couch in 2009 but it may be more than I can handle by that date but if I can do it by June 12 that is a more likely scenario.

Good to see you back Jeremy.  Now is the one time I am glad I don't have kids - yet.  I still have that excuse.  Besides, like you said, if it would come down to me or my wife, I'd be in the doc's office in a sec.

In reality, we needed something to slow down your run pace!  In case there is anyone who hasn't heard, Jeremy is a running machine!

Jeremy:     I was back running in about 2 weeks but I was considerably older than you...I didn't have a race that I was getting ready for so I was just running to be running...and I wasn't doing triathlons then so I can't speak for the bike.

But when I got back in the road there was no problems what-so-ever. ( I do remember that the Doc...who was a runner also... recommended that I wear a supporter for the first 30 days of running)

My husband was a total wuss but I made it perfectly clear I was done with hormones and pills and being the responsible one. I think he thought he might get lucky more often if he bit the bullet and went for it!!

Get the bike set up!!!!!

With over five months you have plenty of time to get really strong on the bike. Last year, I biked all winter and would say I was about where I left off  at the end of the summer.  This year, I have been biking quite a bit on the CT, but the workouts this time around are between 1-2:30 and much more intense.  100% confident I will be stronger come Spring going this route.  Get on that trainer and start pedaling!

Hey there!  I was hoping to get outside for my run today, but ended up at the gym instead.  It snowed a good part of the day and I'm not comfortable running on the roads around here in that kind of weather (I normally use the sidewalks but they generally aren't cleared).  I may go over to the park this weekend though.  It's supposed to be pretty cold, but I need to get outside!

No racing this weekend for me but I do have some goals for 2010.
1.  Spring half marathon - hopefully with a PR.
2.  Sub-30 min 5k.
3.  Olympic distance triathlon in the fall.

Those are the main 3 although I'll probably add to them as the year goes on.

I enjoy the holidays and the time off work, but I'll kind of be glad once things get back to "normal", especially this year because of the weather.  The kids are getting on each others' nerves (not to mention mineSmile), so the sooner they get back in school and on a regular schedule, the better!  That reminds me - I need to get my son's books ordered for his spring semester so he can pick them up once he gets back to campus.  Unfortunately Santa didn't leave an extra $700-$800 in my stocking this year.  I hope they've still got some used ones available.  The frustrating part is that he says a lot of the instructors don't even use the book, but they still have to have it!

Gotta go - I'll check in again tomorrow!

Hey,

I have been watching all the threads from the sidelines the last few days, absorbing all I can, especially those about swimming.

I do have a question. Being on the plan from this site, I have days where I am supposed to run and swim. It is not called out as bricks, but I usually do them sequentially, running then swimming (which is probably considered backwards, but works better for me logistically). Are there any rules of thumb or advice as to whether this is a good idea or does it matter? I like to get all my workouts done in the morning before starting my day, but could split the run and swim to different times of the day as my schedule allows.

Reading all the goals everyone has for 2010 is inspiring. I intend to make some of them my own as I am working on the list today and tomorrow.

Thanks to all for sharing your experiences (tri related and not so much). It has made this thread such that I want to check it every time I get on my laptop.

I'm still wincing ....Not sure that I gave anything to her....but something was taken from me!! Tongue out

seriously though, I took a full week off any training. the warnings of what could happen were even for me to take it easy.
On the 8th day, i went for a swim, and 2 days later did a full spin on my bike. Runnning isnt much of an issue after a week either...if you have some UA shorts under your pants your fine. Keep everything snug man!!

I wouldn't see an issue doing them both in the morning. I've done it. after a good run, jumping in the pool is actually a nice cooldown.

So, since my poor ride today I was wondering, when confined to the trainer, what type of weekly volume do you try to do?  FWIW, I will be riding 4x/wk, and times will vary from week to week as I try to meet my required training volume IAW the TTB.  In January my weekly goals are as follows (h:mm):

Week 1: 3:30

Week 2: 4:15 (start of Base 1)

Week 3: 5:15

Week 4: 6:30

There are a couple of straggling days at the beginning & end of the month that take my monthly bike time to roughly 22 hrs on the bike/trainer.

Hi Glenn

I used to run and then do my swim immediately following for the same reason you do.  For me, it was a mistake.  I don't think my swim was as productive.  Sometimes my legs cramped and I just wasn't as focused as I felt I should be as a new swimmer.  Now I either bike or run first thing in the morning and do my swim around lunch time.  I have a very flexible work schedule so it makes it pretty easy for me to do things that way. I know Kim often does back to back run/swims so she will probably be able to provide a different POV.
