PennState - 2010-02-28 11:28 AM Also it is hard to average over 30 miles a week
Yeah, I have actually been moving away from the big volume concept and more towards the more quality/intensity model. I think a good athlete, which everyone here posting is, can do 25-30 miles per week run as long as there is weekly tempo/interval/threshold type of work done as opposed to just raw aerobic paced volume. I look at some very fast athletes I know and the recent crop of 70.3 pro's who step up to IM with relatively low run volume base and kill the marathon. There's something there we should all take note of. To DC, your open pace is what is, you can't say "well, I did blah, blah 3 weeks before" or "I wasn't in great run shape" or "right now I think I could go". All that matter is what actually was and work from there. If you miss pace an IM run, it's not like oh, I'll be 10min slower, it's more like an hour+ because when it goes bad, it goes VERY bad.
I agree Bryan. I am not going to follow any plan or coaching again this year... but I am aiming to do exactly as you described... 25-30 miles running a week with quality and intensity as a part of it. I will bike more and harder than most on this thread in my training and swim when I can. There that's my top secret LP training plan

so wait, you're gonna swim bike and run?  You've been holding out on us?!?!?!?!?!?!?

PennState - 2010-02-28 1:44 PM Core... testing frequently is a great idea, but I stopped doing it. I'm not arguing for or against testing... just that I really haven't done any testing in 2 years (except races)

Racing is the best testing.

x1000. I ran two legs of the RAGNAR Relay Friday and Saturday at a level I could never replicate on a training session and I don't think I need to remind you guys, I know how to push myself. The race pressure gave me that extra couple of percent at the very top where the pain is so great but you still keep going. That was the best fitness test I could have done right now for my run.

I dont think it matters what you do, as long as u do something.

only problem I have with racing, though that is what I use for testing my run fitness, is the course/weather, etc changes every time.

to test fitness gains, similar conditions test work well.

there is no best.  personally, I use a 400 yard TT, 20 min power test on my CT and a 5k.  Like I said, I don't like the 5k as much as the 400 and 20 minute power as too many variables change from run to run.

I feel like I'm the only one not really training yet. I started in January but that Olympics project and then the Olympics themselves nearly killed me. I had stomach flu two weeks ago, worked 16 hours a day and barely slept for two weeks, then this past week and currently I'm dealing with a really sad personal situation that has made it almost impossible to eat. I lost 6 pounds in one week and while I'm not even working right now, I can't train. I just ran for a lousy 30 minutes and almost passed out. I clearly need to pull it together and fast but just can't seem to find the motivation. I've never quite been in a situation like this.

I feel for you...just getting over it myself...that thing just hung around...one brutal day, than it just hung around for like a week.....

I think its best just to sleep lots and only train if you feel up to it.  pushing through stuff like this can only delay recovery.

you'll break through this just fine.....and dont feel rushed like you have to be back at it now...take your time, and flow back into it over the next 2 weeks.

Nothing like coming back from a 3 hour ride on the coast to find a Marine standing at your door telling you to evacuate before the tsunami hits.  5+ hours later no tsunami and we got back into our house.  At least we know that we can pack our 3 kids, dog, and valuables in the car in under 30 minutes.

Under 21 weeks to go.

When i moved to California a couple months ago i got sick right away...pulled my back...got sick again...then started a new job. I couldnt train for a while. When i did get back in to it..i was sluggish and unmotivated...so i totally understand. Just tri and relax and have faith that u still have what it takes and give it time. Rest up and bet u will surprise urself when u get back in to it. .

Like others have said, give it time and you will be fine. I hope your personal situation works out will send good thoughts your way. Soon you will channel all that emotion into your workouts and will be kicking our backsides!

Don't you love when the first of the month cicks over and you go into your training log and it looks empty like you are just starting out? All those days in white like you haven't done a thing yet!

Thanks everyone. After a total low yesterday I managed to eat enough to get two workouts in today. Nothing crazy but it's a start. I'm going to ease back in over the next couple weeks and then take a vacation to reset things. Hopefully the training will be like therapy, I have found it to be a great distraction at other hard times in my life.

PennState - 2010-03-01 6:29 PMYeah, that start of the new month always feels a bit empty... but think of it as a blank canvas that you can paint a masterpiece on
That's funny, I always love a new month! It's my favorite time b/c I look at it like a new years resolution. I want to make every month better than the one before, so I'm always so excited to start a month with ZERO yellow squares!

LM I do hope you get back into training, it sounds like it would be a good release/distraction for you. Eating is the thing. Whatever gets you to eat so you can train, eat it. If you have a blender try making smoothies. I've found that they are easy to eat even when I'm upset about something, and they will keep you going. I look forward to meeting you in LP!

I think by the time I get off the trainer and on the road I will have watched everything on Hulu, LOL. The weird thing is I never watch a lot of TV but I am watching A LOT more TV training on the bike trainer, too funny.Spring can't come quick enough!

Amen, brother.

I, too, am watching more TV than I care to. I don't even have cable, so I've been hitting up my friends for good TV series DVDs and going to the library to borrow movies. So far I've watched Charlie Wilson's War, Milk, The Savages, and made my way through most of the first season of Arrested Development. When all I really want is to go up 9W on a lovely spring morning and get myself a delicious lemon poppyseed muffin. Sigh. Winter. Time to go.

PennState - 2010-03-02 1:51 PM OK LP peeps, I was destroyed on-call and it not only wiped out yesterday, but essentially today's training. One thing I've learned with a bit of experience is to not push it when your body says no... and today my body said NO It is better to take an extra rest day than it is to squeeze in an extra session that hurts you or gets you sick etc.

I heard somewhere that Rest Days are Necessary!
