I never stopped running outside ( only when snow / sub-zero temps ).

I am contemplating getting out on my bike this weekend.  Mid-40s and sunny is definitely warm enough, and that's what the forecast is calling for!

Just came back from a run--no gloves, no headband, no six layers of clothing. Was even able to take off my long sleeved shirt and run in short sleeves a half mile in! Woohoo!

I also have a long run this weekend and a short bike on Sunday. The most annoying part of this is convincing myself to de-trainer the bike and change the tire. Ugh. Maybe I'll ride the heavier bike. I can still get a good workout outside on that and then I won't have to be all pissy that I have to put the other bike BACK on the trainer in a week when we get another snowstorm (it IS still early March...not convinced we're outta the woods yet!).

I have actually had to break out my summer tri tops and retire the short sleeve cycle tops, it's in the mid 70's here.

Oh I can't wait! I am already planning out my rides for Saturday and Sunday. It will feel terrific to not be on the trainer.

Our roads are going to be in terrible shape.  God only knows what the hell is under those 12+ inches of snow still out there.  We're going to need a strong rain storm in March to wash all the crap away.

On another note.  Raise your hand if you train, or more importantly race, based on RPE???

I followed a link from this weeks USAT newsletter and found a RPE chart.  It says "Ironman-distance race pace for beginners is typically within Zones 1 and 2" and "Ironman-distance race pace for experienced athletes is typically within Zones 1 to 3".  Honestly???  I'm going to spend all day swimming with "gentle rhythmic breathing" and biking/running at a "comfortable and conversation possible" pace?

Changing out the trainer tire is a pain as I have to put it back on for winter training class which is now extended through the end of March since we missed 3 days to snow. It will however be very worth it to get outside and get a long ride in!! I think I will just move the trainer tire to another wheel that doesn't have the powertap.

Yes, I would agree with those zones 1-2 with some zone 3 being where you will spend your day.

If you don't, then you're going to end up in zone 0 ( walking the back half of the run ).

If your breathing is labored, then you're going too hard.

Zone 2 for 30 minutes is not hard.  Zone 2 for ~12 consecutive hours, is an entirely different animal.

You can ride and run outside here all year long, the weather here wet but great...The occasional earthquake, typhoon or tsunami can throw a wrench into things but I can't complain.

In general, yes. There shouldn't be a point during the race where you feel like you are struggling to hold the effort...until about mile 3 of the run. That's where you will say, "Ohhhh, I see now...". RPE is fine as long as you are well tuned into RPE and make on the day adjustments for the conditions. Cool temps can make RPE and HR lower, so you might feel like cruising when you shouldn't. At the end of the day, with Ironman, and this is one of the points I was trying to convey a few pages back trying to give an idea of pacing strategies, you should race what you train your long bikes and run. Your bike pace will be very close to your 100 mile+ efforts, your run up to 1:00 slower in pace but it will feel the same..for a bit. Then it becomes survival, and that's where all that volume you trained kicks in.

Dude. HTFU.

Also, think of the tsunami/typhoon as training for the downpour IMLP could potentially be. Silver lining.

Daffodills!  Spring is arriving right when I get freedom and my plan is just about to start!  It's a sign from the gods, and I'm gonna run (and bike, and swim) with it.

Oh I can't wait to hear all about peoples long rides this weekend OUTSIDE!
I'm a stay at home mum so I'm lucky enough to get my long stuff done mid week to keep weekends clear so I was still on trainer this week.   May have to venture out for a shorter one though - although my toes get cold on trainer so think I'd prefer it more like 60 before I go outLaughing

Mine came through yesterday.  Working this weekend, so I'll have my OUTDOOR rides and runs during the week next week.

Now to get my brakes installed and adjusted...

Ok who else has a 3 hr ride planned for tomorrow... OUTSIDE!!!
3 hour ride on Sunday. Will be 54 degrees. Can't wait. I'm so desperate on the trainer I actually watched the John Adams HBO miniseries while riding 2 hours last night. By the way, it is an awesome series, just not exactly trainer ride material.
