I actually don't like popcorn!

Had a great day at the HM yesterday, I found it easy (definitely didn't go hard!)  I decided to keep it as a training run, set out very cruise speed, increased speed at 7km and again at 14km, in fact my last 7km was my fastest and I enjoyed lots of overtaking as i had so much left in my legs.  Thanks Jeff Galloway for all those run/walk tips!

I've done the RR such as it is.  Baptism was okay - I'm not big on Greek Orthodox as a religion, very much pomp and ceremony and less about what it should be.  Poor baby gets stripped naked and it was cold, covered in oil and dunked in a font of water, then priest has to snip a lock of hair and poor Persephone she's not got much and I think he pulled it coz she shrieked!  In fact she cried all the way through.

BUT the feast was good - so much food, even a HM didn't justify what i ate!

I'm tired, a bit depressed this morning, standard for a post race morning.

cough, cough hey girl heeeeeeeeeey. Can you be August in our Manatee calendar please Great job with your race-I mean training run. Great job taking it easy but also steadily increasing the pace! [/QUgOTE]I thought I was August? . Great job on keeping it a training run Jo, but enjoying yourself too!!!

Oh oh oh, ok. You are August and Jo is September, makes sense with the orange/more fall-like color anyhow . Sorry to bump you Jo (OR MAYBE I'M HAPPY TO Wink!!!)

Now that is what's needed on a dark Tuesday morning when I feel like sh*t.

didn't swim was too tired, massive headache (dehydration is a wonderful thing)  Today just anxious, usual morning feeling these days!  I should go back to the doctor but really???  My coach said to rest until Weds/Thurs so I shall do as I am told for once.  May run Wednesday or ride.  Swim Thursday.

Monday my 30week IM training plan begins.  WTF was I thinking!!!!!!

This was on Diana Nyad's blog regarding her last training swim in Cuba!

The Lucky Manatee

image via Manatees.net

On Tuesday, day before hearing good news of a possible weather window for the Cuba to Florida swim, diana and bonnie spotted a manatee right before slipping into the water for would become Diana's last training swim, the perfect taper. Manatees approach boats sometimes here in search of a hosing off and a drink of fresh water, and this one wasn't disappointed. She swam with diana for a couple of hours, much to the swimmer's delight. Next day, the weather forecast improved, making the manatee seem even more the lucky omen.

Manatees are always lucky. I have a big fat box full of big fat boxes o' luck sitting by my feet right now. Okay, a box or two might be a tiny bit slimmer by now.

Heh, Heh I love it. That was a heavy box. You can probably log however many times you lifted the it in your training log. I really hope they didn't attach that customs form thing I had to fill out. It was a disaster. I'm a disaster.

Ok, pod, two questions.  One relatively easy that y'all should be able to help me with.  One that ultimately I will have to answer myself, but need input.

Question 1.  Missed my long run (16km) yesterday in favor of family bike ride.  Training for HM Sept 30th.

Do I a)skip it, continue on with my regularly scheduled training.

b) Up my mileage on the rest of my easy runs this week

Question 2.  Volunteering for IMC next weekend.  Do I sign up for 2013 or volunteer again next year and go for 2014?

Reasons to do 2013

a) I'm not getting any younger.  I did a lot of sports (soccer, T&F, volleyball, basketball) that were pretty hard on my body growing up.  Weak ankles, no ACL in my right knee, bad shoulder from javelin throwing.  Not sure if it will crap out on me completely.  I have been 'relatively' injury free in the past year, although I am generally icing something once a week.

b)I have an entire year to train

c)???

Reasons to wait until 2014

a) I could save up this year and get myself an actual tri bike

b)I have only been tri training for 10 months.  Give myself another year to build, get some more HIMs under my belt.

c)???

Does the fact that I am questioning signing up mean that I am not ready or is it just normal pre-signing up for IM jitters???

Alright. In my opinion, and the general running community's opinion, your bike won't substitute for a run. Especially a long run. It's those long runs that get your ready for a race like a HM. I realize you weren't implying it was but I just thought that should be stated.

On the other hand, missing one long run won't derail your plan, either. Especially for a HM. But you have done a HM recently in your HIM so it's not like you don't know what the distance feels like or how to pace over a longer course.

I think you have a couple options.

You could (and this is the best option) do your long run today and then just shift your week a little. It doesn't sound like you want to do this BUT it is a good option. Just be sure to take it a little easier the day after if you go this route.

Or just do what you said above. Carry on and maybe make one of your other runs this week a little longer.

How many time are you running a week? I looked at one week and it appears like you are running 5 times a week?

Yep, for the past 2 weeks it has been 5 times a week.  Prior to my HIM it was only 3-4.  I did think about doing my long run today, and haven't totally made the decision yet.  Yesterday was a long day (the ride wasn't so long, but the travel time) and I worked 6 days last week, so dragging a little today...

Yeah, and forcing a training run while fatigued can give you a whole other set of issues.

Also,  running 5 times a week makes missing one run (even a longer one) even less of a deal. Rest up. Maybe make your next run a "medium" and carry on.

Do the run today. Nobody ever feels like doing a long run, really, until you get started and warmed up and then it's awesome. And if it's not, or something is clearly truly not right at some point, walk the rest or bag it in. But definitely try and start it, and do as much as you can.

2014. But you'll probably get bitten by the bug and sign up for 2013 anyway, and that's not a disaster at all. You'll just have to be consistent, consistent, consistent this year.

That's a good point too, you could start it and if you are just too tired, well shoot at least you got out there and kept the rhythm up.

Question 2.  Volunteering for IMC next weekend.  Do I sign up for 2013 or volunteer again next year and go for 2014?

...

b)I have only been tri training for 10 months.  Give myself another year to build, get some more HIMs under my belt.

...

Does the fact that I am questioning signing up mean that I am not ready or is it just normal pre-signing up for IM jitters???

I have a few questions for you:

  • How did you feel about IM Calgary 70.3?
  • How similar is the terrain of IMC and Calgary
  • Training for tri for 10 months or training for 10 months?  11 months ago you were ___.
    • on the couch?
    • a runner training for ___?
I wouldn't put a lot of stock into the nerves.  It could be a simple as that's a lot of money to spend for an event!
